He was working for the City of Wharton when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air force in September 1942.  At the time of his death he was assigned to 789th Bomb Squadron, 467th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force at Rackheath Airfield, England.  His unit arrived in England in the spring of 1944 and entered it’s first combat on April 10, 1944, with an attack on the German airfield at Bourges.  On Luke’s first mission on April 13, 1944 his squadron was enroute to bomb the German airfield at Lechfeld,  when his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft gun fire.  The aircraft caught fire and the crew bailed out.  Five of the ten man crew were not injured, four were injured, the nine were captured by the Germans and became POWs.  Luke, who was in the belly ball turret, was checked by two crew members in the aircraft before they bailed out, and both verified he was dead from a neck wound.  The plane crashed near Ruelshaim, Germany.  He was first interred in Germany, then at the wars end he was moved to Saint Avold (Permanent Cemetery) Saint Avold, France which is today called the Lorraine American Cemetery, He is located in Plot K, Row 26, Grave 34.
