New Zlotnik's To Open Friday

Joining the list of new firms being added regularly to the Edna business district is Zlotnik's, a complete department store located at 109 East Main Street.

The grand opening of the entirely new store will be observed with a sale that starts Friday morning.

Zlotnik's is owned by two brothers, Phil and Gerry Zlotnik of El Campo. They also operate store at El Campo and Bay City.

Manager of the Edna branch will be Fred G. Schroeder of Brenham, who is a former employee of Penney's at Brenham and Schudde Bros. and Sakowitz's in Houston. He is joined by his wife, Madie Earle, and six-month-old son, Rodney Lee. They reside at 201 East Division St.

I like Edna very much and I hope to become better acquainted with everyone as the weeks roll by," Mr. Schroeder said. He said his store would be staffed with local personnel and he extends a cordial invitation for the general public to visit the store on the occasion of the opening Friday and Saturday. Attractive door prizes will be given. You are invited to register.

The store has complete departments for men, women and children, including shoes and piece goods and all sundry items you find in a modern department store, Mr. Schroeder said.

New Zlotnik Building Heads Extensive Building Program Here

The new year of 1956 is being ushered in in Edna with a splurge of new buildings, a Herald survey revealed this week.

Heading the list of buildings is one expected to cost between $40,000 and $50,000 for S. G. Sample that will be leased by Zlotnik's Dept. Store. It is to be located in the east end of the 100 block of East Main St. and will have a 50 foot front and will be 108 feet deep.

Tenants in three frame buildings now on the site have been asked to move by Feb. 1 when the old building will be razed. The contract is expected to be let soon for this structure, to be modern in every respect. The building will be of brick with a modern glass front and will be air-conditioned for winter and summer. The building also will have a new type lighting system. Zlotnik's is expected to occupy the building by August 1.

A beautiful pink stone front harmonizes with 65 feet of display windows which flank the swinging doors and glass panels on Main Street and side door entrance on Menefee.

Interior of the store is tastefully highlighted with walls in decorator colors with floors harmonizing in vinyl asbestos tile. Latest type of wall fixtures and counters are in natural finish oak. Fluorescent lighting brightly illuminates the entire store.

Departments in the new Zlotnik's store include ladies ready-to-wear, foundations, infants and children's clothing, men's and women's accessories, men's and boys' clothing, complete family shoe department, work clothing, fashion fabrics, notions, patterns and home furnishings.

Store Lay-Out Speeds Service

Visitors to the opening of Zlotnik's store will view a newly standardized method for placing merchandise on display for easier customer selection.

Special counters and counter bays, many with glass build-ups and dividers, display merchandise effectively for easy and speedier selection by suggesting merchandise according to size and price. Counter cards and bin tickets also help achieve maximum customer convenience.

Every feature and facility of he new Zlotnik store is geared for greater speed of service and convenience to Zlotnik shoppers. this efficient operating factor automatically lowers selling costs, which makes it possible to pass the resulting savings on to Zlotnik customers.

Gerald Zlotnik, 55, of Edna and a former resident of Bay City, died Monday, February 23. While in Bay City he was active in the Chamber of Commerce, the Community Concerts and manager of Zlotnik Department Store here in Bay City during the 1950s and 60s. Graveside services will be held today, February 24, at 3 p. m. at Emanu El Cemetery, 8431 Bissonnet, with Rabbi Roy Walter officiating. Family request contributions to the American Cancer Society.

April 3, 1928 - March 8, 2004

DOLORES BABCHICK ZLOTNIK, passed away on Monday, March 8, 2004, in Houston, TX.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 35 years, Gerald Zlotnik. Survived by her beloved children, Charlyn Zlotnik, Randy Zlotnik, Elise Vecera and her husband, Bob; cherished grandchildren, Bryan Gerald and Courtney Michelle Vecera; fond brother, Jack Babchick and his wife Harriet; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian Putterman, Phil Zlotnik and his wife Frances; numerous nieces and nephews.

Dolores was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. in the Kagan-Rudy Chapel at Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonnet. Rabbi Roy Walter and Cantor Vadim Tunitzky officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The American Heart Association.
