Funeral services for James White,
Jr., 77, of Bay City, will be held Saturday, March 10, 2001 at
11 a.m. at Mother Zion Baptist Church in Bay City, with the Rev.
K. J. Griggs, eulogist. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery
in Bay City.
Visitation will be Friday until 9 p.m. in the chapel of
Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.
He was born in Pledger, Texas, Tuesday, April 10, 1923, to James
White, Sr. and Alma Jackson White, and passed away Sunday, March
4, 2001, at the Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas.
He attended elementary school in Pledger, and graduated from
Powell Point High School in Kendleton, Texas. Afterwards, he
attended Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas, where
he graduated with a bachelor of Science Degree in mathematics,
and a Master of Arts Degree in administration. His professional
career in education span 39 years, which began in Hempstead,
Texas. By furthering his career, he was affectionately known at
"Prof White".
In 1953, he was appointed principal of the A.G. Hilliard High
School in Bay City, a position he held until 1967. Afterwards,
he became assistant principal at Bay City High School, and ended
his professional career in education in the Boling Independent
School District.
His religious affiliations included membership with Mother Zion
Baptist Church. There he served faithfully and proved to be a
good follower. At the time of his demise, he served as trustee,
the financial secretary, and as president of the Prayer and
Christian Study.
His civic and community involvements included serving as Sr.
Vice-Commander of the American Legion, member of the Bay City
Retired Teacher's Association, the Democratic Party, the local
chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. and the Prairie View Alumni
Association. His untiring dedication of service to mankind
continued throughout life. He leaves many hearts filled with
love and compassion for mankind.
Survivors include: his wife of 36 years, Barbara Jean White;
three daughters, Jimmie Lee Luthuli and Omowale and Jacqueline
Ruth Brown and Gordon, all of Houston, and Penita Laval Caesar
of Bay City; one son, Sgt. Alfred L. Young and Jamey of Ft.
Knox, Kentucky; and six granddaughters, Anyika, Nanita, Jimmie
Ahimsa, Amber, Alexia and Aleysha; also a host of nieces,
nephews and cousins, other relatives and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Artis Allen, Randolph Brown, Franklin
Bryant, Harry Sauceda, Anthony Smith, James Smith, Jr., Kenneth
Young and Thomas Young. Honorary pallbearers will be Gordon
Brown, Leonard Hopkins, Al Jackson, Lloyd Jackson, Travis
Jackson, William S. Hart, Clarence King, Omowale Luthuli, Levi
Reliford, Alfred Young, and the deacons and trustees of Mother
Zion Baptist Church and area churches.
Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.
