M. Sternberger, ex-Confederate soldier, prominent citizen and good man, one of the leading and most prosperous merchants of this section of Texas, died in this city this morning at 7:15 o'clock with an attack of pneumonia of only a few days duration. He will be buried in the Jewish cemetery at Houston tomorrow. Decedent was born in Freisbach, Rhein Bavaria, Germany, on May 15, 1842, and came to this country with his parents at the age of 5, landing in New Orleans. At the outbreak of the Civil war Mr. Sternberger joined the fortunes of the South and served throughout the four years of bloody carnage as a private in the 1st Louisiana Regiment. After the war he returned to New Orleans where he remained until 1873 when he came to Texas landing at Port Lavaca where he engaged in business. In 1902 he moved to Bay City and began a dry goods business which he was conducting at the time of his death. Mr. Sternberger was a very successful man and succeeded in gathering together quite a competence, begin at the time of his demise well possessed with money, goods and real estate. He left no family of blood relationship, but was surrounded, when the hour of dissolution came by the relatives of his boyhood friend and companion for whom he has for many years been a father. No death of recent years created more genuine sorrow and regret than that caused by this good man. His friends were legion and he was a friend to everyone. Quiet and unassuming, conscientious in all his dealings to his fellow man, careful and considerate in all his undertakings he gathered to himself the confidence and esteem of all who came in contact with him and leaves to mourn his sudden and untimely end the aching hearts of many friends and associates. The funeral party will leave on the Southern Pacific train in the morning at 9:20 for Houston and the body will be laid to rest in the Jewish cemetery in that city under the rites of the Jewish faith tomorrow afternoon. Matagorda County Tribune?, December 23, 1912 Michael Sternberger The funeral of Michael Sternberger, age 70 years, who died at his home in Bay City Monday, was held from the Grand Central station at Houston at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The remains were shipped to Houston care of the Sid Westheimer Company. Dr. Henry Barnstein officiated. Interment took place in Beth Israel Cemetery.--Houston Post.
