James C. Sisk and Fannie McDonald Sisk Family James C. "Jim" Sisk, son of Charles L. J. Sisk and Mary E. Trice, was born February 29, 1884 in a small settlement known as Estill Fork, in Paint Rock Valley, Alabama. He was eleven years old in 1895 when his family made their big move in a covered wagon. Jim found Texas to be an exciting place. He played with his brothers and sisters, did his share of the chores, and attended school in Bay City.
As an ambitious young man, James C. Sisk became involved in helping his father in his grocery store and eventually became a partner with his father C. L. J. Sisk and his brother Robert J. Sisk. In 1916 they purchased the Doubek and Hawkins Hardware Store in Bay City and the store became Sisk Grocery and Hardware Company. For a number of years the store was operated by J. C. Sisk and Robert J. Sisk, and was eventually bought by James C. Sisk. This store which was later known as Sisk Hardware Inc. was still owned and operated in 1984 by his daughter, Mary James Sisk Breeden and his grandchildren.
On June 3, 1908, James C. Sisk married a young school teacher, Fannie McDonald. "Miss Fannie," as she was always called, had moved to Bay City in 1903 with her parents, the Reverend and Mrs. Eli McDonald, from Terryville, Texas. "Reverend Brother McDonald" had been called to serve as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bay City.
James C. Sisk and "Miss Fannie" were hard working people who were determined to have a good life. They prospered in their grocery and hardware business. With pride and pleasure they offered a sincere welcome to people who came by the store just to "visit." Mr. Jim enjoyed relating stories of his native Alabama, and of early Bay City. "Miss Fannie" who worked as the bookkeeper for many years always met customers and friends with her sweet smile.
James C. Sisk, a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, served on the City Council from 1916 through 1921, was president of the Cedarvale Cemetery Association, and treasurer for the Matagorda County Drainage District No. 1.
"Mr. Jim" died on July 16, 1967, at the age of eighty-three. He had always joked with friends saying that he stayed young because he was born on leap year and so had a birthday every four years.
"Miss Fannie" died on January 7, 1975, at the age of ninety, and at that time was the oldest Charter Member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Bay City.
James C. and Fannie Sisk were buried in Cedarvale Cemetery.
"Miss Fannie" and Jim Sisk had one daughter, Mary James, born on November 25, 1919, in Bay City. She attended school in Bay City and was graduated in 1937. She attended Gulf Park College in Gulfport, Mississippi, and The University of Texas in Austin. On December 9, 1945, Mary James was married to her childhood sweetheart, Dr. Shelton Breeden, a young dentist who had just graduated from Washington University School of Dentistry, and who at that time, was serving in the Dental Corps of the United States Navy. To this union three children were born.
