George Lester Sewell Family

George Lester Sewell was born on November 24, 1888 in Summerville, Georgia, to Zana Carrie Ball and Jessie Franklin Sewell. Jessie Franklin Sewell served in the Civil War. He was a farmer and a strict Baptist. He came to Texas after some of their children had moved there. Jessie had five sons and seven daughters, but only six of his children moved to Texas. Jessie died on July 20, 1912 and was buried in Prairie Lea, Texas. Zana Carrie died on February 18, 1918, and was also buried in Prairie Lea.

George Lester Sewell came to Matagorda County in 1907 looking for work, as the boll weevil had discouraged cotton farmers in Caldwell County. He married Lemma Agnes Richardson on December 28, 1908, in Bay City, and their daughter, Bertha Louise, was born on September 30, 1909. In the fall of 1909, they moved to Chances Prairie, where they farmed with Benjamin Richardson, Lemma's father.

Their son, James Britton Sewell, was born on October 4, 1911, at Chances Prairie. He attended school in Hasima and Van Vleck. He married Eleanor Ballard. They resided in Sweeny and were members of the Baptist church. He was a rural mail carrier and a carpenter and in 1984 was retired.

Madeline Sewell was born on October 12, 1913, at Hasima. She attended school at Hasima, Bay City and Victoria Junior College. She taught school at Lukefahr for two or three years. During World War II, she was a gun inspector for the Dixon Gun Plant in Houston. She married James Magness and they resided in Conroe, Texas, where they were members of the Baptist church.

Hixie Ida Sewell was born in Hasima. She attended school in Hasima, Bay City and Victoria Junior College. She taught school for two years and was a rural mail carrier. She married Henry Clifford Flowers in 1940 and they resided in Brazoria. Henry died on June 8, 1964, and was buried in Brazoria, Texas. They were of the Baptist faith also.

George Richardson Sewell was born on November 3, 1918 and attended school in Hasima and Bay City. He was on the Blackcat football and track teams. He joined the Navy where he served for twenty-one years. He then worked for Civil Service as a metalsmith and in 1984 was retired. He married Frances Miltbrant and they resided in San Diego, California. They were of the Baptist faith.
