Glenn Jay Sedam, Sr., former publisher of the Bay City Daily Tribune, passed away May 2, 2005 at Matagorda General Hospital. His dedication to God, to his family, to the Daily Tribune, and to the community of Bay City was a true witness of life lived by Christian principles.
He was respected for his honesty, integrity and his willingness to stand up for his beliefs.
He was known for his progressive and caring leadership in both church and community affairs. His love of life was reflected in everything he said and did.
Mr. Sedam was born on August 19, 1916, in Monongahela, Pennsylvania. He began his newspaper career in the advertising department of his hometown paper, The Monongahela Daily Republican.
Subsequent promotions led him to work for the McKeesport (PA) Daily News, the Pittsburgh (PA) Press, the Wilmington (NC) Post, the Clarksburg (WV) Exponent and Telegram, and the Gadsden (AL) Times before becoming vice-president of Southern Newspapers, Inc.
On March 26, 1958, Mr. Sedam and Southern Newspapers purchased The Daily Tribune, Texas' second oldest newspaper. Mr. Sedam's first edition as publisher was May 1, 1958. He retired on December 1, 1981.
Area promotion and community service were the hallmarks of his tenure as publisher.
Special editions promoting business, industry and civic functions featured the Boy Scouts, Typical Brides, Rice Festival, Little League, Fat Stock Show, and Future Farmers of America.
In January 1963, he introduced the annual Chamber of Commerce Progress edition. The Tribune also editorially promoted city and county projects, including the new courthouse.
The Daily Tribune won numerous awards while under the leadership of Mr. Sedam. The most notable award was the Texas Press Association's General Excellence Award presented to the Daily Tribune in June 1968 for being the outstanding daily newspaper in Texas having a circulation under 25,000.
Mr. Sedam was a past president and lifetime member of the Texas Press Association and was affiliated with other state and national newspaper organizations.
While Mr. Sedam was publisher of the Daily Tribune, 15 other publications attempted to establish competition against the newspaper but none were successful.
Mr. Sedam was a very active church and community leader. He was an elder and chairman of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Bay City. He also served in district, state and international offices of the church organization.
He was international president of the Christian Men's Fellowship when he moved to Bay City in 1958, he also pastored Charles Street Christian Church in Shinston, West Virginia for eight years.
He held leadership roles in many Bay City and Matagorda County organizations, including serving as president of the United Way for two years, chairman of the Salvation Army for five years, president of the Matagorda Council for Retarded Citizens for two years, chairman of the parks and recreation board for five years and president of the Matagorda County Community Concert Association for 10 years.
Mr. Sedam was a past member of the Bay City Chamber of Commerce board of directors and served on both the Bay City Home Rule Charter Commission and the Industrial Foundation Board.
He was a member of the Red Cross board of directors and Little League board of directors. He also served as a member of Texas Christian University's Advisory Board and the Advisory Board of the University of Texas School of Communication.
For the past six years, Mr. Sedam has been a resident at The Legacy.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Dorothy Gillingham Sedam, his wife of 17 years, Nora Lee Cox Sedam, and his eldest son, Glenn Jay Sedam Jr.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, Ica Dora and Earl Jay Sedam and siblings, Erma Jane Sedam McCully, Dorothy Sedam Comin and James Earl Sedam.
He is survived by: his daughters, Linda Sedam McCulloch of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and Dr. Cynthia Sedam of Fort Worth, Texas; his son, Tommy Sedam Sr. and wife Jodie of Brownwood, Texas; and daughter-in-law, Charlotte Sedam of Warrenton, Virginia.
Also surviving are: nine grandchildren, Glenn Jay Sedam III and wife Elizabeth of Charlotte, North Carolina, Kathryn Lamonia and husband Todd of Marshall, Virginia, Christina Sedam of Charleston, South Carolina, John Sedam of Warrenton, Virginia, Tommy Sedam Jr., of Bay City, Texas, David Sedam of Houston, Texas, Leigh Ann Sedam of Austin, Texas, and Henry Sedam of Houston, Texas, and Douglas McCulloch of Williamsport, Pennsylvania; four great-grandchildren, Glenn Jay IV and Kristen Sedam of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Ryan and Erin Sedam of Mineral Wells, Texas.
He also is survived by five stepchildren and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff members of The Legacy and Matagorda General Hospital for their dedicated and compassionate care of their father.
A memorial service is scheduled for Mr. Sedam at the First Christian Church of Bay City on Saturday May 7, 2005 at 3 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to the Glenn Jay Sedam Memorial Fund at First Christian Church or to The Activity Department at the Legacy. Former Tribune Publisher Dies May 2
Glenn Jay Sedam, Sr., 88, of Bay City, publisher of The Daily Tribune from 1958 to 1981, died May 2 at Matagorda General Hospital. Mr. Sedam was born Aug.19, 1916, in Monongahela, Penn. Mr. Sedam and Southern Newspapers Inc. bought the Matagorda County Tribune, a weekly, and the Daily Tribune from the Carey Smith family March 26, 1958. The Carey Smith family owned and operated the Tribune - Texas' second oldest newspaper still in operation - for 47 years.
His first edition as publisher was May 1, 1958, and on April 23, 1959, the Daily Tribune and the County Tribune became one paper.
While Tribune publisher, he was named to Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and was active in both the Texas Press Association (TPA) and the Texas Gulf Coast Press Association. He served both associations as vice-president and president, and was TPA's chairman of the board 1975-76.
Mr. Sedam was president of the Matagorda County United Way for two years, chairman of the Salvation Army for five years, president of the Matagorda Council for Retarded Citizens for two years, chairman of the Parks and Recreation Board for five years, and president of the Matagorda County Community Concert Association for 10 years.

Dorothy Sedam Dies Monday at Age 68
Dorothy G. Sedam, former secretary-treasurer of Bay City Newspapers Inc. and an active leader in community and church activities, died of a cerebral hemorrhage Monday in a Houston hospital at the age of 68.
She was the wife of former Daily Tribune publisher Glenn J. Sedam. Among her activities was charter membership in the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary, which she served as president in 1978 and 1979. As a Pilot Club member, she earned recognition for her service when elected president in 1967 and named Pilot of the Year in 1969.
Together with her husband, she spearheaded establishment of Bay City Community Day Care Center and was a strong supporting member of Community Concert Association, Daughters of the American Revolution and Chautauqua.
Mrs. Sedam was named Woman of the Year by the Bay City Chamber of Commerce in 1980.
As a member of the First Christian Church, she served as deaconess and president of the District Disciples of Christ Christian Churches. She also held local, district, state and national office in the Christian Women’s Fellowship. In addition Mrs. Sedam served terms on the church’s International Board of Directors over the last 35 years.
She was born in Washington County, Pa., in 1916.
Visitation is scheduled for 2 – 4 p. m. Wednesday at Bay City Funeral Home, and a memorial service is set for 7 p. m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Bay City. She will be buried Saturday in the Monongahela, Pa., Cemetery following services in Donora, Pa.

Memorial services for Dorothy G. Sedam of Bay City will be held at 7 p. m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Doris Street, with the Rev. John Jolley officiating. Burial will be in the Monongahela, Pa., cemetery at 11 a. m. Saturday following services at the Rabe Funeral Home, Donora, Pa.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p. m. Wednesday at the Bay City Funeral Home, Avenue K and Sixth Street.
Mrs. Sedam was born in Washington County, Pa., on Oct. 5, 1916, and died at 10:47 a. m. Nov. 5, 1984, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Houston.
Mrs. Sedam was secretary-treasurer of Bay City Newspapers from May 1, 1958 to Nov. 30, 1981, and was active in community and church affairs. She was named Woman of the Year by the Bay City Chamber of Commerce in 1980.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn J. Sedam Sr., of Bay City; two sons, Glenn Jr. of Great Falls, Va., and Tommy Sr. of Lake Jackson; two daughters, Linda McCulloch of Williamsport, Pa., and Cynthia of Springfield, Ill.; two brothers, George Gillingham of Floreffe, Pa.; one sister, Sarah J. Oakes of Fairfax, Va.; and nine grandchildren, Tommy A. Sedam Jr. of Bay City, J. David Sedam of Victoria, Leigh Ann Sedam and Henry C. Sedam of Port Lavaca, Douglas H. McCulloch of Williamsport, Pa., and Glenn J. Sedam III, Kathryn Sedam, Christina Sedam and John Sedam, all of Great Falls, Va.
The family will provide flowers and have requested that remembrances by friends be made to the Dorothy G. Sedam Memorial of First Christian Church.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dick Elkins of Bay City Funeral Home.

Nora Lee Cox Sedam, 84, of Bay City, died July
12, 2004. She was affectionately known as "Granny" to her many
friends in the Bay City and surrounding area. She was born June 25,
1920 in Lockhart, Texas to the late Frank C. H. and Norma Meta
Harborth Woerndel.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m.
Thursday, July 15, 2004 at the First Christian Church of Bay City
with the Rev. Arden Aldridge officiating. Family visitation will
follow the service. Private burial will be at a later date. |

Glenn Sedam Sr., former Daily Tribune editor and resident of Bay City, recently returned from a memorial service for his son. Glenn Sedam Jr., 57, of Warrenton, Va. held at 4 p. m. Feb. 11, 1994, at St. James Episcopal Church in Warrenton, Va.
Mr. Sedam Jr. was born in Elizabeth, Pa., to Glenn Jay and Dorothy Gillingham Sedam Sr. of Bay City and spent his youth in Clarksburg, W. Va. He died Feb. 5, 1994, in Deerfield, Mass., after suffering a heart attack while visiting his son at Eaglebrook School.
A graduate of the University of Virginia, he was a commissioner officer in the U. S. Navy for eight years. He received his law degree from the College of William and Mary and subsequently joined the law firm of Steptoe and Johnson in Washington, D. C.
He served as an advance man for President Richard Nixon in 1971 and then as legal counsel for the Republican National Committee. During the 1972 presidential campaign, he served as legal counsel for the Committee to Re-Elect the President during the Watergate era and later as legal counsel for the Nixon Inaugural Committee.
Prior to founding his private practice in Fairfax, Va., Mr. Sedam Jr. served as chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Virginia Port Authority, from 1978-1982, under Gov. John Dalton.
A member of the Metropolitan Club of Washington, D. C., he was also a member of the Congressional Country Club in Potomac, Md., Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Va. and the Commonwealth Club in Richmond, Va. He served on the Board of Partnership for Warrenton, Va., and as a past Vestry member for St. James Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Bar of the District of Columbia and Commonwealth of Virginia and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Charlotte of Warrenton, Va.; four children, Glenn Jay III, Kathryn Charlotte, Christina Margaret and John William Gillingham, all of Warrenton and students at various schools; his father, Glenn Jay Sr., of Bay City; two sisters, Cynthia Sedam of Williamsburg, Va. and Linda McCulloch of Williamsport, Pa.; a brother, Tommy A. Sedam of Brownwood and numerous extended family members.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Student Scholarship Fund, Eaglebrook School in Deerfiled, Mass., or to the Deerfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, Deerfield, Mass.
