Dodge City Army Air Field, Kas.--With 12 years of Army experience behind him, First Sergeant Alexander G. Schicke of the 61st Two-Engine Flying Training Squadron, has served under two generals who have distinguished themselves in the present world conflict, General Dwight D. Eisenhower now directing our forces in Europe, and Lt. Gen. Walter S. Krueger, Allied Commander in the South Pacific. First Sergeant Schicke put in 9 of his 12 years in the infantry at Fort Sam Houston, Tex., near San Antonio; and it was there that he was under the command of Gen. Eisenhower as battalion commander, and Lt. Gen. Krueger, divisional commander. "Those nine years of my army career were the hardest," says Sergeant Schicke. Some of that experience included 24-mile hikes during a day's time, carrying full field equipment and with only one canteen of water. That was in the middle of summer, and the temperature was terrific, the Sergeant recalled. Rest periods were only 10 minutes. Another experience that Sergeant Schicke well remembers while in the infantry was winter maneuvers which took him to near Christine, Tex., where his company spent 50 days and nights in freezing temperatures. "It snowed so much there we had to dig out of pup tents every morning, and I don't recall a day in which the temperature was not freezing. It took me days to really get thawed out after we left that place," the Sergeant said. While in the infantry he qualified as an expert in bayonet and rifle. He has fired every light calibre infantry weapon the army possessed at that time. Promotions in the old army, says Schicke, were difficult to obtain. It took long experience and hard work to get up the ladder, and even then it was a slow process--but he did climb as high as corporal. All of Schicke's nine years of infantry experience were spent in and around Fort Sam Houston. In June of 1941, he was transferred from the infantry to the air corps and was sent to Kelly Field, San Antonio. Seven months later he was a Buck Sergeant. Five months after that he was awarded the stripes of a Staff Sergeant, and 30 days later was made Staff Sergeant of the 61st Squadron at Kelly. In the spring of this year the 61st as a unit was transferred to Dodge City Army Air Field. Sergeant Schicke is a native of Wisconsin, but moved with his parents at the age of 7 to Palacios, Texas, where he was reared and spent his high school days. The Schicke family is well represented in the armed forces. Two brothers are overseas, Master Sergeant Ernest Schicke, is with the Air Corps in New Guinea. He left the states the day after Pearl Harbor. The second brother is Sergeant Clarence F. Schicke, stationed with the army engineer corps in India. First Sergeant Schicke and his wife, Jenevia, who were married in Dallas, Tex., August 8, 1936, live at Chestnut Street, Dodge City.
