William and Agnes Sasse
Married February 20, 1908 in Byron, Nebraska

William and Agnes Sasse

William F. Sasse, (February 21, 1883 - May 14, 1971) was one of 13 children born to Franz Sasse (August 13, 1843 - February 8, 1930) and Marie Moritz Sasse (December 22, 1841 - July 11, 1916). Both Franz and Marie were born and married in Germany.  They immigrated to the United States in the late 1800's. Franz was a stone mason and a farmer. After entering the United States they moved to Nemaha County Nebraska to join a German Lutheran community that was already established there.  William was born in Byron, Nebraska, grew up there, and met Agnes Eggers there.  William and Agnes married in Byron, Nebraska on February 20, 1908. As a result of the advertising promotion they received from Palacios, Texas, they moved to Texas in 1911 and bought a farm in Turtle Bay, close to Deutschburg, an already established German Lutheran community. William was a founding member of the Lutheran Church established there. The church met in the local community school house. Their only daughter, Charlotte Caroline Wilhelmine Sasse, known as "Lottie" was born in Palacios on February 4, 1913, and died on November 15, 1913 after a two week illness of unknown origin.  After Lottie's death, William and Agnes took their infant daughter on the train back to Byron to be buried in the family cemetery. They returned to Palacios and for unknown reasons sold the farm in 1915 and returned to Smith County, Kansas where several brothers and sisters had settled and homesteaded land. They never had any other children and lived out their remaining years in Smith County, Kansas. Both are buried in the family cemetery in Byron, Nebraska where they were born and raised.  Because of the friendships they developed while living in Texas, William and Agnes often returned to Palacios to visit until both were in their 80's and could no longer travel.

Lottie Sasse, beloved little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Sasse, died last Saturday, Nov. 15th, 1913, at 1:55 p. m. after an illness of two months. Her age was nine months and eleven days. Funeral services were held at the house at 8:20 o’clock Saturday evening by the Rev. F. Stelzer, pastor of the Lutheran church. Many neighbors and friends showed their sympathy to the bereaved parents by their presence at these services.

Mr. and Mrs. Sasse, together with the corpse, departed for Blessing Saturday night from where they left for their former home in Nebraska. There the child will find its last resting place.

May God heal the wounds that have been caused by the death of the dear little child.
