John Richard (1847-1933) & Margaret J. (1860-1938)

My name is Margaret Josephine Herman Rowles. I was born in County Heath Ireland on May 25, 1850. I came to America with my family at the age of six and resided in New York. My father’s name was Joseph Herman. John, my husband, was born in Oxford County England on August 13, 1847. He came to New York at the age of 21. We were married in Herman Springs, New York on November 4, 1872 - the very year John arrived. All four of our children were born in New York. We sailed from New York to the Port at Indianola, just south of here, in 1875 with our children. At that time, Indianola was a thriving port. We moved up the Tres Palacios River to Grimes Landing, near the old town of Tidehaven and set ourselves up as ranchers and farmers. My husband was a Mason and we were members of the Church of England (Episcopalians). We celebrated our golden wedding anniversary on November 4, 1922 at our home in Palacios. Our daughter Sara Jane Rowles married Louis Wolf. She is buried in the above-ground tomb over there. John died in his sleep the morning of March 21, 1933. I died October 21, 1938 in Blessing at the age of 88 years. -- Palacios Cemetery Tour

John R. Rowles

The death of J. R. Rowles last Tuesday morning, came as a shock not only to his family, but to the whole community as well. He was out driving around with his daughter, Mrs. Plez Dawdy only the day before his death. He retired Monday night apparently in as good health as usual, and Tuesday morning just failed to wake up at his usual time. A beautiful way to leave this world--without suffering and illness before departure--but hearts are sore for the sorrow to his dear and devoted wife and to his family. Just a week ago they were both telling some friends about their first coming to Texas in the early seventies. Both were born in England and were married in New York--then sailed from there to old Indianola when that place was a thriving port. From there they came up the Tres Palacios to Grimes Landing--and have lived in that section of the country ever since. Mr. Rowels was a Mason and his lodge conduced the funeral services at the grave in the Palacios cemetery. The Rev. Paul Engle conducted services at the Dawdy home. Mr. and Mrs. Rowles have always been Episcopalians--"Church of England" people and while they have not been able to attend services at the church they have received the ministrations of the church in their own home for some time. Interment took place in the Palacios cemetery on Thursday afternoon, many friends attending from Bay City, Palacios, Houston and Blessing. A more complete notice was given elsewhere in the papers.

John R. Rowles

John R. Rowles was born in Oxford County, England, August 13, 1847, and departed this life March 21, 1933 at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 8 days.

At the age of 21 years he came to the United States. On Nov. 4, 1872, at Union Springs, Cayanga County, New York he was married to Miss Margaret J. Herman and in February, 1875 they came to Texas and so impressed were they with the beauty of Matagorda County that they decided to make this their home and soon got located and became engaged in farming and stock raising.

To them were born four children, the son dying in infancy and their daughters who with his widow survive.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Nov. 4, 1922 at their home in Palacios.

Owing to poor health some five years ago he and his wife decided to move back to their old home town, Blessing, Texas. There their health soon began to improve, he began to get well for one of his age.

His honesty and integrity had made him many staunch friends who were shocked to learn of his sudden death which came to him in his sleep just after sun-up on March 21.

His remains were laid to rest in the Palacios cemetery with Masonic services.

The church services were conducted from Blessing in his home by Rev. P. E. Engle.
