My name is Joseph Hurta. The Austrian spelling
is “Josef.” I was born March 14, 1878 in Austria. I married a girl
five years older than me named Kathryn Muscial. We called her Kate.
She was born in Poland on November 25, 1873. She was the daughter of
Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Muscial. We sailed from Bremen, Germany on a ship
named “Koln” to the Port of Galveston after the turn of the century.
You can find our names on the passenger lists. I was an engineer and
a farmer by trade and put my trades to work when we got to the
Palacios area. We had a farm in Deutschburg, which is actually in
Jackson County but just west of Palacios. I also served on the Draft
Board for WWI for Jackson County. Kate and I had three daughters and
three sons. I died suddenly on October 22, 1926. My wife lived on in
the Palacios area for the next 35 years. She died August 2, 1961 at
the age of 88, just before hurricane Carla hit here. “I’m kinda glad
she didn’t have to see all that mess.”--

Louis Hurta, son of Mrs. Joe Hurta of Deutschburg community, was killed in a mine in New Mexico one day last week and the remains were shipped here for burial. A priest from El Campo and a band from Ganado participated in the funeral service held here Saturday in the Catholic Church and burial was made in the City Cemetery. Deceased was a Mason and many Palacios members attended the services. He had contributed liberally to the support of his mother and family since the death of his father Joe. His sudden and tragic death comes as a double blow to her. We join the community in extending sympathy.
