Former
JP Hinton Dies At 87 By Robert Lucey, The Daily Tribune Former Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace David Boyd “Jack” Hinton, 87, died early Wednesday after a lengthy illness. At the time of his retirement in 1986, he had served in public office more than five decades. Hinton was justice of the peace from 1956 until his retirement. Prior to then he served as county clerk for 14 years, and before that he served as city tax assessor and collector. Former County Attorney Fred Holub served with Hinton for 30 years in the courthouse and remember him as a conscientious public servant. “He never failed to respond to any kind of call, no matter what time of the day or night,” said Holub. “I would say he was very conscientious about his job and he was very fair about his fines. It didn’t matter who it was, he was fair. He was a fine man and devoted to his wife.” Sheriff Sam Hurta remembered Hinton as a compassionate man. The sheriff also remembered the justice of the peace coming out at all hours with no complaint—except on one occasion. One night when Hinton was called to read somebody their rights, the judge arrived in a foul mood. Hurta remembers that when he asked Hinton what was wrong, Hinton denied there was any problem. The next morning, however, he brought two apple pies to the jail. “That was his way of apologizing,” said Hurta. “He was a fine fellow. When he was in the prime, no judge could keep up with him.” Hurta said Hinton was always reading to keep up with the law. “He forgot more than most J. P.s ever knew,” said Hurta. The sheriff and other county officials recalled that well into his later years, Hinton once dispensed justice with his fists after a man became belligerent. The man, who was reportedly refusing to pay a fine, reportedly drew back his fist as if to punch the judge. Hinton beat the man to the punch, and after one “dose” of Hinton’s knuckles, the man became docile as a lamb and paid up. Hinton was also supportive of youth organizations, including Babe Ruth. “Youths are our future,” was his philosophy, Hurta said. Born in Valley Mills, Texas, on May 29, 1902, to William Boyd and Sarah Elizabeth Barton Hinton, he attended Meridian Junior College. There, he was the pitcher on the baseball team. In 1927 Hinton married Helen Parker, whose family had moved to Bay City in 1902 when she was 3 years old. Her father, Dr. Phillip Parker, co-owned the Matagorda Pharmacy which was built in 1906. Helen has just become a registered nurse after graduating from Baylor Nursing School in Dallas when she and Hinton married in Dallas. She then brought him back to Bay City. Helen has been a member of First Presbyterian Church at the age of 9. Hinton also joined the church after their marriage as did their three children. Helen Hinton died in 1983. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law David and Evelyn R. Hinton; two daughters and one son-in-law, Lula Mae Hinton and Sarah and William Hilton, all of Bay City; one sister, Ruby Browning of Beaumont; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p. m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Duncan officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.
