Francis Herreth, Jr. Family
Francis Herreth, Jr., was born in Vienna, Austria, on September
2, 1842, the son of Francis Herreth, Sr., and Mary Haesler
Herreth. Francis, Sr. was born in Germany in 1810. His wife,
Mary, died and he married second Catherine, who raised Francis,
Jr. The Herreths came to the United States in 1859, and settled
in Chippewa County, Wisconsin.
On December 21, 1863, Francis Herreth, Jr. enlisted in the Union
army and received a three hundred dollar bounty. He stated that
he was a resident of Eagle Point, Chippewa County. He served as
a tailor in Company A, 7th Regiment of the Wisconsin
Infantry Volunteers.
After the war, he returned to Chippewa County and on June 22,
1869, married Anna Swoboda, daughter of Francis Jodleda Swoboda
and Elizabeth Rettiz Swoboda. Anna died on February 8, 1873, and
was buried in the Church Cemetery in Tilden. On January 27,
1874, Francis Herreth, Jr., married second Katherine Bleskacek,
daughter of Adelbert Bleskacek and Katherine Schwarz Bleskacek,
who was born on November 21, 1853, in Germany.
In 1878 Francis moved his family to the Dakota Territory to
pioneer on Homestead Land in McCook County, later to become
South Dakota. He was a successful stockman and farmer there, but
in 1891, with his wife’s health failing, he sold his cattle and
land and moved to Gainesville, Texas in search of a milder
climate. They lived in Gainesville for a while, and then moved
to East Columbia, Texas. His son, Joseph, died on June 24, 1895,
and his wife Katherine died on July 28, 1895. She was buried in
the old cemetery on the bank of the river in East Columbia.
Francis Herreth, Jr., moved to Matagorda County in 1896, and
bought fifteen acres of land at Ashby. He died there on April
19, 1920, and was buried in the St. Francis Catholic Church
Cemetery, Wadsworth, one of the few Union veterans buried in
Matagorda County.
The children of Francis Herreth, Jr. and Anna Swoboda were:
John Herreth (June 14, 1870-March 14, 1955), who married
Theresia Eiseman of Scotland and resided in South Dakota.

The children of Francis Herreth, Jr. and Katherine Bleskacek
were:
Joseph Herreth (November 16, 1874-June 24, 1895).
Mary Annie Herreth, born on November 16, 1876, who married
John Bunk, son of Henry and Viola Siguda Bunk, and has John W.
Bunk, George Andrew Bunk, Henry Francis Bunk, Frank James Bunk,
Theresa Bunk and Clarence Thomas Bunk.
Barbara
Herreth (April 7, 1879-August 25, 1899), who married Tom
Petrucha, and had no children—she was the first person buried in
the St. Francis Catholic Church Cemetery in Wadsworth.
Martin Herreth (April 13, 1881-July 21, 1976) who married
Hannah Isabell Jones, daughter of Rufus and Lavertie English
Jones, and had K. L. Herreth, Rufus Francis Herreth and Edith
Beatrice Herreth Elliot.
Henry Herreth (March 2, 1884-October 18, 1947), who married
Gladys Weiss Bowler and had William Henry Herreth, Mabel Louise
Herreth and Henry Herreth.
Annie Herreth (March 23, 1886-April 30, 1967) who married
Victor Schulte and had Alma Schulte Bump, Jessie Mae Adams
Edmondson Williams, Pearl Beatrice Schulte Ryman and Authur
Schulte.
Elizabeth Clara Herreth (July 11, 1888-November 6, 1972) who
married John Cusack and had Richard Cusack, Clarence Clyde
Cusack, James Joseph Cusack and Howard Earl Cusack.
Albert Casper Herreth, Sr. (August 9, 1891-July 21, 1949)
who married Elizabeth Clara Gavender and had Lawrence Albert

Albert C. Herreth, Sr. and Elizabeth Clara Gavender, daughter of
Alex Martin Gavender and Gohanna “Annie” Bunk Gavender, were
married on September 17, 1915, by I. N. Barber, Justice of the
Peace, Matagorda County, Texas. (See Francis Herreth, Jr.
Family)
Albert Casper Herreth, Sr. was born on August 9, 1891, in Salem,
McCook County, South Dakota, and came to Matagorda County in
1896 with his family. He farmed in various locations in
Matagorda County and finally settled in Blessing in 1937. He
died on July 7, 1949, and was buried in Cedarvale Cemetery in
Bay City. Elizabeth Gavender Herreth continued to live in the
family home and celebrated her eighty-fifth birthday on July 11,
1984, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, A. C. and
Georgia R. Herreth. One of her hobbies was sewing, a skill she
had learned from her father-in-law, Francis Herreth, Sr., who
was a tailor, both for the Union Army during the Civil war and
afterwards.
Albert C. Herreth, Sr. and Elizabeth Gavender Herreth’s children
were:
Lawrence Albert Herreth (September 17, 1916-December 1,
1965) who married Martha Ruth Johnson, and had Thomas Albert
Herreth and Margaret Ruth Herreth.
Viola Clara Herreth, born on May 19, 1918, who married
Stephen Monroe Rickaway and had Frank Everett Rickaway, Edna
Elaine Rickaway, James Edward Rickaway, Stella Ruth Rickaway and
Clyde Wayne Rickaway.
Lois Annie Herreth, born on December 29, 1919, who married
first Charles Barlow and had Marilyn Ann Barlow and Joel Edward
Barlow. She married second Bryan Smith.
Carl Frank Herreth, born on April 30, 1925, who married
Irene Pecha and had Carl Frank Herreth, Anton Albert Herreth,
Carol Suzanne Herreth, David Earl Herreth and John William
Herreth.

Herreth
Funeral services were held last week for Albert C. Herreth, 57,
of Blessing. Survivors were his wife; four sons, Lawrence H.
Herreth of Houston, Carl H. Herreth of Houston, Albert Herreth
Jr. of Bay City and Walter K. Herreth of Blessing; three
daughters, Mrs. Viola Rickaway and Jo Ann Herreth of Blessing,
Mrs. Lois Barlow of Bay City; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Bunk of
Bay City, Mrs. Lozzie Cusack of San Antonio, Mrs. Annie Shoulte
of Houston, Mrs. Alex Shoulte of Blessing; two brothers, Martin
Herreth of Bay City and John Herreth of South Dakota.

Funeral services for Elizabeth Clara Gavender Herreth, 92, of
Blessing, will be held 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Taylor Brothers
Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. David Kleinfeldt and the Rev.
Lee Rickaway officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarvale
Cemetery in Bay City.
Mrs.
Herreth was born July 11, 1899, to Alex Gavender and Annie Bunk
Gavender in Wadsworth and died Dec. 23, 1991, at Matagorda
General Hospital.
A
lifelong resident of Matagorda County and a resident of Blessing
since 1936, she was the descendent of a pioneer family and a
member of the Baptist church.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Viola and
Steve Rickaway of Blessing, Lois and Bryan Smith of Lake Jackson
and Joy and Albert Rickaway of Brazoria; three sons and
daughters-in-law, Carl and Irene Herreth of Lolita, A. C. and
Georgia Herreth of Bay City and Walter and Jessie Herreth of
Houston; two sisters, Maggie Cadenhead of Bay City and Lucy G.
Watkins of Kerrville; and one brother, Walter Gavender of Bay
City; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three
great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and
a host of friends and neighbors.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, Albert C. Herreth Sr., and
one son, Lawrence Herreth.
Pallbearers are Brett Herreth, Jimmy Rickaway, Mike Herreth,
Glenn Rickaway, Tony Herreth and Jack Brown.
Honorary pallbearer is Jack Rice.

Carl Herreth
Carl Frank Herreth, 88, passed away on March 11, 2014, in Bryan.
He was born on April 30, 1925, in Collegeport, the son of Albert
Casper and Elizabeth Clara Gavender Herreth. Carl grew up and
attended schools in Jackson County. In 1944, Carl enlisted in
the United States Army, serving this country in World War II. He
was honorably discharged in 1946.
Carl was united in marriage to Irene Josephine Pecha in Houston
on May 1, 1948. He served as a commander of the Lolita VFW Post
#8556. He was a member of the Lolita Fire Department and served
his community as a deputy constable for Jackson County. Carl
also was a member of the A. F. L. – C. I. O. In, 1987 he retired
from Alcoa Aluminum after serving 36 years as a welder. Carl and
Irene made their home in Bellville in 1994.
Carl is survived by his wife Irene; children, Carl, Anton,
Carol, David and John; 14 grandchildren and 17
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Elizabeth
Herreth, brother, Lawrence, sisters, Lois and Viola, and one
grandchild.
Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p. m. Wednesday, March 12 at the
Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Bellville. Family and friends
paid their final respects from 1 to 1:45 p. m. Thursday, March
13, at the Ganado Cemetery. Graveside services followed at 2 p.
m., with Pastor Dale White officiating.
Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren.

Albert C. Herreth, Jr. Family
Albert C. “A. C.” Herreth, Jr. and Georgia Irene Rice were
married on March 7, 1947, in the First Christian Church of Bay
City in a ceremony performed by the Reverend Luke Bolin. They
were baptized in the same church on Sunday evening, February 7,
1954, and were both active members. (See Albert C. Herreth, Sr.
Family)
A. C. attended schools in El Maton and Blessing, and on January
2, 1945, enlisted in the United States Army, where he received
his Parachutist’s Badge and Wings on June 1, 1945, from Fort
Benning, Georgia Paratrooper School. He was assigned to the
Headquarters and Service Company of the 864th
Aviation and Engineers Battalion and sent to the Asiatic-Pacific
Theater on August 28, 1945. He received an Honorable Discharge
on November 15, 1946.
A. C. was employed by Dow Chemical Company, Texas Division from
1947 until 1973. On April 1, 1976, A. C. was certified as a
Senior Engineering Technician by the Institute for the
Certification of Engineering Technicians. In 1982 when the
Apache Corporation bought Dow’s Petroleum Operations, A. C.
retired with 35 years of service, but was then employed by the
Apache Corporation in the same capacity. A. C. and Georgia also
owned numerous rental properties which were managed by their
daughter, Diane.
From 1948 through 1957, A. C. and Georgia were partners with her
parents, Rena and Jack Rice in the operation of the Sycamore
Inn. The next three years Georgia worked concurrently at three
jobs: Church secretary, clerk for the Selective Service and
agent for Statewide Modern Homes. In 1970 Georgia completed
advanced and instructor’s training at the Ben Shaw School of
Modeling in Houston and operated Georgia Herreth’s Studio II
from 1973-1976. In 1979 Georgia was elected Bay City’s first
woman City Council member and served for two terms. Her
political activities were not limited to the local scene. She
was an active member of the Democratic Party, was an alternate
delegate to the National Democratic Presidential Convention in
1980 and in 1983 and 1984 served as Matagorda County’s first
woman County Democratic Party Chairman.
In 1986 Georgia was president of the Bay City Chamber of
Commerce. Both A. C. and Georgia were active in numerous
organizations, including the VFW, American Legion, Bay City
Community Theater, Matagorda County Museum Association,
Matagorda County Historical Commission, Bay City and Matagorda
County Business and Professional Women and the Matagorda County
Texas Sesquicentennial Committee. Georgia was a member of the
Daughters of the American Revolution. A. C. and Georgia were
charter life members of the Matagorda County Genealogical
Society in which Georgia served as president in 1985-86.
Georgia and A. C.’s children were:
Melissa Diane Herreth was born April 19, 1951. She attended Bay
City schools and was graduated on May 29, 1969. Diane was an
athletic teenager; she played basketball and volleyball in high
school, but her greatest talent was softball. She received many
trophies for participating in softball and was named to the All
State All Star team in 1966. On December 2, 1972, she married
Charlie Ray Stavinoha. That marriage ended in divorce in 1973.
There were no children. Diane was manager of Herreth Properties
in Bay City.
Albert Elton “Abby” Herreth was graduated from Bay City High
School in 1971 He attended Wharton County Junior College where
he majored in business administration. He later changed his
major and attended for an additional two years. He was awarded
an A. S. degree in 1975. He was employed by Rugeley Motor
Company from 1975-1980, and then worked at Phillips Petroleum
Company. Abby was a charter member of the Cradle of Texas
Chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American
Revolution. As a youth, he was a member of the First Christian
Church, but on November 25, 1979, became a member of the Holy
Roman Catholic Church.
Brett Ramzel Herreth was born in Bay City. He was graduated from
Bay City High School in May of 1979 and attended Wharton County
Junior College for two years. He was employed as circulation
manager for the Daily Tribune. Brett was also a member of
the Cradle of Texas Chapter of the Sons of the American
Revolution. On August 3, 1984, Brett married Sandra Lynn
Hazlewood, daughter of Carl William Hazelwood and Marlene Margie
Gibbens Hazelwood. Sandra had two children from a previous
marriage, Shawn Wayne Guess and Justin Lee Guess.

Herreth, Jr.
October 10, 1926 - June 22, 2020
A. C. Herreth, Jr. passed away peacefully in
his sleep at his home on June 22, 2020 after a long and valiant
battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
He was born October 10, 1926 to Elizabeth
Clara Gavender Herreth and Albert Casper Herreth, Sr. in the
home of his Grandparents, Alex and Annie (Bunk) Gavender in
Wadsworth, Matagorda County Texas. He was one of seven children:
Lawrence Albert Herreth, Viola Clara Herreth Rickaway, Lois
Annie Herreth Barlow, Carl Frank Herreth, Walter Curtis Herreth
and Joy Ann Herreth Rickaway.
A. C. attended schools in Matagorda County
and received his official delayed High School Diploma to a
standing ovation at Tidehaven School in Matagorda County. He had
left high school early to volunteer into the U.S. Army during
World War II. He was inducted on the January 2, 1945.
A. C. received his Parachutist's Badge &
Wings on June 1, 1945 from Fort Benning, Georgia Paratrooper
School. He was assigned to the 864th Aviation and Engineers
Battalion and sent to the Asiatic Pacific Theatre on August 28,
1945. He served in the Philippines and Japan. He was a life
member of both the VFW Post 2438 in Bay City and the American
Legion Post in Blessing. He received an Honorable Discharge on
November 15, 1946 with the rank of Sargent.
On the way overseas it came over the loud
speaks that Japan had surrendered. He said every person on the
ship was crying with happiness that the war was over. But he
said there were still snipers in the mountains in the
Philippines and they had to go up with flame throwers to get
them out, but he never talked about the war, just that once.
In December of 1946 at the Christmas dance at
the Palacios Pavilion, AC. 's sister Lois Herreth Barlow
introduced her brother to Georgia Ann Rice who was with her
parents at the table with other family members and friends.
After a short courtship AC. and Georgia were married on March 7,
1947 in the First Christian Church in Bay City by Rev. Luke
Bolin. Both were active in their church. They were both on the
Board, served as Deacon and Deaconess. He was Chair of the
Property Committee and his wife taught Sunday School, both
Children's and Adults. She was part time Church Secretary and
was in the Choir. While they were dating, he would come to the
church to drive her home from choir practice. They were baptized
together on the same night soon after they were married. AC.

engagement ring when she accepted he's proposal.
A. C. went to work for Dow Chemical in 1947
as an Operation Engineer. AC. helped build a number of their
rent houses and bought several more, doing business as Herreth
Properties. AC. also started his own roofing company and ran
that for many years until he retired.
From 1948 through 1957 the Herreth's were
partners with Georgia's parents, Jack & Rena (Ramzel) Rice
owners of the Sycamore Inn. It was across the street from the
then new Bay City High School. The new school did not have a
cafeteria. Everybody came to the Sycamore Inn for school
supplies, lunch, and coffee breaks.
A.C. and Georgia had three children: Melissa
Diane Herreth (April 19, 1951 - December 25, 2004), Albert Elton
(Abby) Herreth, and Brett Ramzel Herreth.
A.C. and Georgia loved to dance and at one
time belonged to three private dance clubs. They also loved to
travel.
They visited all but six of the United States
plus several European Countries plus England, Scotland, the two
Irelands, Wales, Canada and Mexico. They often included family
research in their travels.
They traveled by car, camper, motorhomes,
ships, and planes. They renewed their vows on their 60th
Anniversary on a cruise of the Western Caribbean, in a private
ceremony conducted by Captain Edward Perrisn of the Grand
Princess, they renewed their vows in the Ship's Hearts & Minds
Wedding Chapel, at the same time date as 60 years before.
Visitation will be Saturday June 27, 2020 at
1:00 pm at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. The funeral will be
following visitation at 2:00 pm with the officiating Rev. John
Williams of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Burial will be
in the family plot at Historic Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1
daughter, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife
of 73 years Georgia, his sons Albert (Abby) Elton Herreth (Joe
Louis Valdez). Brett Ramzel Herreth and wife (Kathy), Grand
Daughter Teri Kay Gleason of Crosby, Grandson Albert William
Rice Herreth, Great Grandchildren: Jaymee Kay Gleason and Cullen
Ray Gleason, one sister Joy Ann Herreth Rickaway and one
sister-in-law Irene Herreth and also many nieces, nephews, and
cousins.
Pallbearers will be Benito (Benny) Aguilar,
Mike Herreth, Jon Hale, Lynn Grebe, Kent Pollard, and Chris
Rickaway.

Melissa Diane Herreth
Melissa Diane Herreth, 53, of Bay City,
died tragically Christmas morning at her home due to accidental
carbon monoxide asphyxiation.
She was born April 19, 1951 in Bay City to Albert Casper "A. C."¯
Herreth, Jr. and Georgia "Ann"¯ Irene Rice Herreth.
She graduated from Bay City High School in 1969. She was married in
1972 to Charlie Ray Stavinoha. They divorced and he later died.
She had a beautiful alto singing voice and lettered four years in an
Acapella Choir in high school.
At the age of nine, she was on the first girls softball team in Bay
City, the "Delta Sparks¯."
It was sponsored by Frank Brangan, owner of Delta Electric, and
coached by Lila Ray. The girls played together for 10 years and
remained life-long friends.
Through the interest of her family, the first girls' softball field
was named for her grandfather, Ira Elton "Jack"¯ Rice, who was
instrumental in getting the land donated by the City of Bay City for
Jack Rice Field.
The team won over 100 trophies and Diane was named to All-State
twice. She pitched and played first base.
She remained an avid sports fan, at times watching four games on
four TVs at the same time.
She was also a Girl Scout, and took guitar and piano lessons.
Her favorite hobbies were fishing, playing pool and she loved to
dance.
She was a very good dancer, and took lessons for many years from
both Dorothy Ramsey and Nora Beth Stone.
Diane's ancestors on her maternal side came to Texas with Austin's
"Old Three Hundred"¯ and her 10th great-grandfather Gardner was the
first overseer of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630.
She is a fifth-generation resident of Matagorda County on her
father's side.
She was a life-long member of the First Christian Church. She
accepted Christ and was baptized as a teenager.
Diane was a very caring and giving person, often putting the needs
of others ahead of her own. Material possessions meant nothing to
her.
The love of her family and friends was what counted with her. She
touched so many, many lives and will be missed so much by all.
A beautiful light that shined brightly is dimmed, but not gone. God
rest beautiful daughter.
She worked for the Daily Tribune for 18 years, advancing from
carrier to route supervisor and finally to district sales manager.
She was currently managing her family's business, Herreth
Properties.
She is survived by: both of her parents; two brothers, Albert "Abby"
Elton Herreth and Brett Ramzel Herreth and his son, Albert William
Rice Herreth; her nephew, all of Bay City; one daughter and
son-in-law, Teri and Jimmy Gleason; and by three grandchildren,
Cullen, Jaymee and Brittany, all of Crosby, Texas; and a host of
extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Ira Elton
"Jack" ¯and Mary Rena Ramzel Rice and paternal grandparents, Albert,
Sr. and Elizabeth Gavender Herreth.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 29,
2004, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Brenda Wilson,
minister of the First Christian Church, officiating.
Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.
Pallbearers include, Bruce R. "Rex"¯ Martin, III, Jay Lee, Ramona
Smallwood, Tracy Sciba, Sonny Sciba and Jon Hale.
Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Louis Valdez, Doug Seifert, Justin
Guess, Shawn Guess, Roland Spurr, Roland Allen Fondon, Leonard Ray
Knight, nephew Albert Herreth and his mother Sandra Lynn "Sandy"¯
Herreth, and special friend Billy Kelly.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral
home.
Memorials may be made to the Girls' Softball League or to the First
Christian Church of Bay City.

Joy Ann Herreth Rickaway
October 20, 1933 – November 26, 2021
Joy Ann Rickaway, age 88, of Brazoria, passed from life on this
earth to heaven on Friday, November 26, 2021. Joy was born on
October 20, 1933, to Albert and Elizabeth Herreth in Blessing,
Texas. She was the youngest of seven children. Joy married Albert
Rickaway in Blessing on Christmas Day, 1949.
Along with being a wonderful mom and wife, she was beloved in other
ways. She offered childcare services at her home for several
families in earlier days and worked as a beautician for more than 20
years. She loved her church at FBC Brazoria and served for more than
60 years in various capacities, including being a Sunday School
secretary and church hostess, and she assisted in several children’s
programs.
Joy truly loved spending time with her kids, grandkids, and great
grandkids and always supported them in their interests and
activities. She was blessed with many dear friends with whom she
shared numerous memories such as playing dominos, going camping, and
traveling to many great places. Other interests included quilting,
gardening, and she loved to cook for her family and friends.
Joy was preceded in death by her husband Albert Rickaway; her
parents, Albert and Elizabeth Herreth; all of her siblings Lawrence
Herreth, A.C. Herreth, Carl “Sonny” Herreth, Lois Smith, Viola
Rickaway, and Walter Herreth; and her two grandsons Nathan Rickaway
and Daniel Kimmel.
Surviving family members include sons Lee Rickaway (& Linnell) of
Desoto, TX, Glenn Rickaway (& Dana) of Muldoon, TX; and daughter
Penny Kimmel (& Glenn) of Rowlett, TX. Grandchildren include Paul
Rickaway, Jenny (& Khary) Bentick, Heather (& Brian) Commons, Jason
(& Sarah) Kimmel, Melissa Kimmel and Megan Kimmel. Great
grandchildren Heidi Commons, Dominic and Wesley Bentick, Hallie,
Wyatt, and Beau Kimmel, and also, her beloved dachshund Susie.
Pallbearers are Jason Kimmel, Paul Rickaway, Brian Commons, Joe
Odom, Mark Taylor, and Charley Tindol.
Joy’s celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church of
Brazoria at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, December 2, 2021, with burial at
Brazoria Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church starting at 9 am
that day.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to Benevolence
Fund at FBC Brazoria or the charity of your choice.
