Sul-Ross Harrington was born in College Station, Texas, on October 19, 1893, and died on January 17, 1949, in Bay City, Texas. He was the first-born son of Dr. Henry Hill Harrington and Florine Ross. His maternal grandparents were Elizabeth Tinsley and Lawrence Sullivan Ross. Miss Tinsley’s parents were owners of a rather large plantation, and Dr. Tinsley was a prominent physician in Waco, Texas, throughout the mid-nineteenth century. Lawrence Sullivan Ross, famed Texas Ranger captain, Confederate Army general, sheriff of McLennan County, State Senator, fourteenth Governor of Texas, and later president of Texas A & M College, was born in Bentonsport, Iowa Territory, on September 27, 1838, to Shapley Ross and his wife Catherine Fulkerson. The Ross family traveled to Texas in 1839, with the promise of large land grants for farming. They settled in a village which is now Waco. Shapley Ross settled permanently in that community, becoming a noted Indian fighter, operator of the only ferry across the Brazos River, and owner of a moderately large farm. He died about 1890, being preceded in death by his wife.
After their marriage in the University Methodist Church in Austin, the Sul-Ross Harringtons moved to Bay City, and, for several years, lived in the old Robbins home. In June, 1933, they moved to 1709 Third Street, shortly before the birth of their only child, Sul-Ross Harrington, Jr. The couple was both socially and civic minded. Harrington was a court reporter for the Twenty-Third District Court for 25 years. He was an active Mason, Shriner, Knight Templar, co-founder of the Bay City Chapter of the Demolay, a member of the Board of Stewards of the Methodist Church, and a charter member of the Wesley Class. He was also a member of the Lions Club, American Legion, and the Bay City Booster Club. Shortly after his death, Mr. Harrington was honored with a Congressional Proclamation noting his personal and professional contributions.
Thelma Harrington was a secretary for owners of the rice dryers and later for the County Judge of Matagorda County. Thelma participated in Eastern Star, the Red Cross, and several social clubs. After her husband’s death, she served as County Juvenile Officer for twenty-seven years, until her retirement in 1976.
Dr. Sul-Ross Harrington, Jr. graduated from Bay City High School in 1951. After earning his PhD he had a private practice as a clinical psychologist in Houston, Texas, and resided in Katy and Bay City. He married Donna Jean Connally of San Antonio, and they had one child, Thomas Gregory Waters Harrington. Mrs. Harrington taught in the Katy Independent School District and was a principal in the Bay City Independent School District. Dr. Harrington, a member of psychological associations at the state, regional, national and local levels, was a Fellow and Diplomat in the American of Behavioral Medicine, and was named in Who’s Who in the Southwest.

Father Of Sul Ross Harrington Dies At
Kilgore Dr. Henry Hill Harrington, 79, chief chemist for the Railroad Commission, former president of Texas A. & M., and outstanding educator, died at 10:15 Wednesday night at Kilgore. He had been ill of pneumonia for the past three weeks. Dr. Harrington was the father of Mr. Sul Ross Harrington of Bay City. His body was brought to Bay City by Taylor Bros. for burial in Cedarvale Cemetery. Dr. Harrington was born in Buena Vista, Mississippi, December 14, 1859. He was a member of the first graduating class of Mississippi A. & M. After having taught there for several years he moved to Texas where he taught chemistry at Texas A. & M. He then became president of Texas A. & M., a place he held from 1907 - 1911. He was at one time a member of the board of regents of Texas of University. He was chairman of the state board of control for seven years under Governor Neff, Ferguson, Moody. Besides Mississippi A. & M., Dr. Harrington attended Cornell and Yale Universities and in 1902 he spent some time in Germany attending the University of Goetlinger. He was married in 1892 to Florine Ross, daughter of L. R. Ross, a former Texas governor. Survivors other than his wife include one son, Sul Ross of this city, a brother of Waco, J. T. Harrington, and a grandson, Sul Ross, Jr. Funeral services will be held this Friday afternoon from Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. R. E. Connell of the Bay City Methodist Church officiating. Active pallbearers are T. M. Smith, Carlos Masterson, Bob Bassett, Paris Smith, Pat Thompson, W. F. Tetts, F. A. Verser, A. L. Holloway. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. J. G. Springer of Austin, Dr. Ross Marstellar and T. O. Walton of College Station, Judge M. S. Munson of Angleton, Fred S. Robbins of Bay City, Pat Neff of Waco, Judge D. R. Pearson of Richmond, S. C. Chappell and T. M. Scott of Austin, C. J. Dutton of Richmond and Adolph Goldman to Austin. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Bros.

Sul-Ross Harrington, Jr. Dr. Sul-Ross Harrington, Jr., was born August 14, 1933 in Bay City to Sul-Ross, Sr. and Thelma Chancellor Harrington. He passed away June 19, 1995 at his residence in Bay City. He was a Clinical Psychologist having a private practice in Bay City. He was a 1951 graduate of Bay City High School; attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas; held a B. S. from the University of Houston an M. A. from North Texas State University; earned his P. H. D. from the United States International University in San Diego, California; and served his residency from 1962-1966 at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He was certified and licensed by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists, a designated Health Service Provider in Psychology by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists; and registered as a Health Service Provider with the Council for the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. He had been in Independent Practice in Houston, a Site Psychologist at the South Texas Nuclear Plant, and with his Independent Practice in Bay City spent a total of 35 years practicing Psychology. He had been affiliated with Matagorda General Hospital and Matagorda House Nursing Home in Bay City, Wagner General Hospital in Palacios, Doctor’s Hospital, Rosewood Psychiatric Hospital, Westheimer Day Hospital, Bellhaven Psychiatric Hospital, and Citizen’s General Hospital all in Houston. He was active in the American Psychological Association in the divisions of Clinical Psychology, Psychotherapy, Consulting Psychology, Psychological Hypnosis, Psychoanalysis, Psychologist in Independent Practice, Personality and Social, Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology, and History of Psychology; and active member of The Texas Psychological Association and the Houston Psychological Association. He was a former member of the Southwestern Psychological Association; American Association of Mental Deficiency; American Orthopsychiatric Association; Biofeedback Society of America; Biofeedback Society of Texas; Biofeedback Society of Harris County, Psi Cm; Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis; founder and the first President of Texas Hill Country Psychological Association; a charter member of the Victoria Area Psychological Association; and served on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Behavioral Medicine. He was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church; a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity; Sons of the Republic of Texas; Bay City Masonic Lodge #865 A. F. & A. M.; Knights Templay; Bay City Chapter R. A. M.; 131 Mina Shrine; Worthy Patron of the Bay City Chapter 380, Order of the Eastern Star; and the One Peaceful World Society. He was preceded in death by his father, Sul-Ross Harrington, Sr. in 1949 and his mother, Thelma Chancellor Harrington in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Donna Connaly Harrington of Bay City; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Gregory and Katie Waters of Dallas; Grandchildren, Kyle, Kendall and Zachary Waters of Dallas; Mother-in-law, Geneva Connally of San Antonio; Cousin, Dorothy Carter of Corpus Christi; Aunt, Von Cile Chancellor of Corpus Christi; and “Brother,” Mr. Ira “Sonny” Callaway. Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 p. m. Wednesday, June 21, 1995 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Welch and Michael Toland officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers include, Mr. Ira “Sonny” Callaway, Mr. Glen Brooks, Dr. Robert Prall, Mr. John Rother, Dr. Russell Matthes, and Mr. Roger Ryman. Honorary Pallbearers include, Dr. Charles Gaston, Judge Jack Salyer, Dr. John Pope, Judge John Camp, Mr. Charles Everett, Mr. Otha “Doc” Dockens, Dr. James Kirkham, Mr. Scotly Richardson, Mr. Bert Huebner and Mr. Bob Peden. Dr. Harrington, “Sully” would long be remembered for his kindness, gentle manner, absolute devotion to his family, dedication to his profession, and love of his hometown, Bay City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Bay City, the Matagorda County Museum, or the Bay City Public Library. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.

Dr. Henry Hill Harrington was a professor of Chemistry at A & M
while his future father-in-law, Lawrence Sullivan Ross, was
president of that institution. During much of the early years of
Sul-Ross Harrington’s education, his father served the
University as a Professor and later as President. At the turn of
the century, Dr. Harrington took a two-year sabbatical to study
in Germany. This provided the young Sul-Ross with an opportunity
to experience early education by European tutors. The
Harringtons moved to Fort Worth, where Dr. Harrington was a
consulting engineer for the State, and Sul-Ross received his
high school education in that city. Shortly after high school,
Dr. Harrington was appointed to the Board of Control in Austin,
where Sul-Ross attended The University of Texas having returned
home after a tour of duty as an Army Lieutenant in World War I.
During that period, Sul-Ross met Thelma Chancellor, the
secretary of a State Senator. After a lengthy courtship, they
were married in August of 1925. Thelma Chancellor, who was the
daughter of Charles and Georgianna Chancellor, was born on July
18, 1898, in Dublin, Texas, where her father supported the
family as a carpenter. The Chancellor family moved to Austin
when Thelma was four or five years old. Her father died in
Mercedes, Texas, in 1938 and her mother died in Bay City in
March of 1963.
