Jack Hansen, part owner of Bay Equipment Co. and an outstanding leader in the Bay City civic community as well as the county’s agricultural community, died Wednesday at his home. Hansen, 59, died after a brief battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Bay City. “He was a good community worker and a good personal friend,” said Sidney Schwartz, President of the Bay City Lions Club of which Hansen was a member. “He will be sorely missed in this community.” Hansen had been with Bay Equipment Co. since 1962 where he was part owner with Dan Penick and Max and Leni Gist. “We were just like a family,” said Mrs. Gist. “He was very helpful to the farmers.” Born in Danevang, Hansen lived in the Wharton-Matagorda County areas most of his life. He graduated from Texas A & I University with a degree in agricultural engineering. He was employed by International Harvester Co. until 1962 when he bought into the ownership of Bay Equipment Co. He was a leader in the agricultural community and served on many committees including Bay City Chamber of Commerce’s Agricultural Committee where he was past chairman. At the time of his death Hansen was vice chairman of the Matagorda County Water Council. “He was one of the prime promoters of the soybean industry in Matagorda County in the early ‘70s,” said James Engbrock, the county’s chief agricultural extension agent. “I can’t say enough good things about him.” Doris Gray, office manager for the Chamber of Commerce, also had nothing but praise for this former community leader. Funeral services for Jack J. Hansen, 59, of Bay City will be held 2 p. m. Friday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. W. D. Baker officiating. Burial will be 3:30 p. m. Friday at Danevang Lutheran Cemetery, Danevang. Mr. Hanson was born Feb. 7. 1930, in Danevang, Wharton County, Texas and died Aug. 23, 1989 at his residence. He was a part owner of Bay Equipment Co. since 1962 and was employed by International Harvester Co. previously. He graduated from Texas A & I University in Kingsville with a degree in agricultural engineering. A member of First Baptist Church in Bay City, he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. As a civic leader, he worked with Little League, was a coach for the Rotary Club’s Babe Ruth team and was a member of the Bay City High School Booster Club. He was a past president of the Bay City Lions Club where he served in numerous positions and was an assistant chaplain at the time of his death. He also served on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and its Agricultural Committee. He served with the Headquarters Battery of the 7th Infantry Division’s 49th Field Artillery as a radar repairman on the 48th Parallel in Korea. On Sept. 1, 1851, he married the former Lois Martin. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Lauryn Hansen of Pasadena; a son, Michael Hansen of Houston; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Chris Barbee of El Campo; a brother, Gene Wilbert Hansen of Danevang; four sisters, Cecilia Fehlau of Hockley, Irene Flagg of Victoria, Louise Bobbitt of Beaumont and Ellanora Schliesser of Cleveland, Miss.; and three grandchildren. Pallbearers include past presidents of the Lions Club: Allen Cumbie, Allen Green, Charles Coney, Vernon Leissner, Robert Klepac, Sidney Schwartz (current president), Charles Matthews and Rick Glassett. Honorary pallbearers include deacons of First Baptist Church and members of the Bay City Lions Club. Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home. Lois Martin Hansen Hayes, 70, died Thursday, May 3, 2001 at her home in Bay City. She was born March 7, 1931 in Bishop.
Mrs. Hayes lived in
Alice during her school years, and graduated from William Adams High
School. She attended Texas A & I University in Kingsville, where she
was a cheerleader from 1948-1951.
She met Jack J.
Hansen, a native of Danevang, at Texas A & I. They were married
Sept. 1, 1951. Mr. Hansen, now deceased, was the International
Harvester and Case International dealer in Bay City for 27 years
until his death in 1989. They moved to Bay City in 1962.
Mrs. Hayes retired
from the Bay City ISD in 1991, where she searved as a substitute
teacher for six years, then as the school secretary at Tenie Holmes
Elementary for 20 years. While there she coined the name seen on
bumper stickers, T. H. E. School. She became a Christian in 1943 and
served continuously in the Baptist Church Sunday School, Vacation
Bible School, Training Union, G. A. s, adult and children's choirs
and various committees and offices until her death.
She was a past
president of the Bay City Educational Secretaries Association and
the Bay City Book Review Club and the Flower Gardeners Club. She
enjoyed membership in several bridge clubs since her retirement.
Mrs. Hayes is survived by her; her second
husband, Daniel E. Hayes of Bay City; her daughter and son-in-law,
Carol Hansen and Chris Barbee of El Campo; son and daughter-in-law,
Danny and Lauryn Hansen of Houston; and son Michael Hansen of
Houston; brothers and sisters-in-law W. L. Suzanne Martin of San
Antonio and Gene and Carolyn Martin of Georgetown; five
grandchildren, Jonathan and Julie Barbee of El Campo and Lawton,
Travis and Lynlea Hansen of Houston; and step-children Grace and
Michel Romero of Los Osos, Calif., Keith of Abilene and Dr. Royce
and Rachel Hayes of Dallas.
Mrs. Hayes was
preceded in death by her husband Jack, and by her parents, Mayme
Myers and Thomas B. Martin.
Services will be
Saturday, May 7, at 10 a. m. at First Baptist Church of Bay City
with Dr. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Interment will be at the
Danevang Lutheran Cemetery, with Father Wayne Flagg, a nephew,
assisting.
Pallbearers will be
Jonathan Barbee, Adam Pearson, Jeffrey Martin, Glenn Fehlau, Dr.
Royce Hayes and Charles Coney.
