Thomas J. Hamilton Family
By Marguerite G. Badgett

Thomas J. Hamilton, son of Sarah Burch and George W. Hamilton, was born in Kentucky on September 20, 1846. His mother, the daughter of Joseph and Susannah Boarman Burch, died soon after his birth, and Thomas J. was reared in the Catholic faith by his paternal grandfather and step-grandmother, Ann Spalding and Thomas Hoskins Hamilton. Thomas H. Hamilton's first wife, Eliza Ann Clements, died in 1843, and his second wife, Ann S. Hamilton, died in 1858. Thomas J. lived with his grandfather until Thomas H. died in 1861, and then remained in Kentucky until the early 1870s.

According to family tradition, Thomas J. met Abel H. "Shanghai" Pierce in Kansas City and was convinced that he should go to Texas with Pierce. When he first came to Matagorda County, Thomas J. worked at various jobs, including driving cattle for Pierce. Thomas J. was always striving to improve himself, and studied law while he was serving as sheriff of Matagorda County. He was admitted to practice law on June 10, 1892. He served as sheriff from 1890 through 1894, and as county attorney in 1895.

Thomas J. Hamilton married Fannie Putson Sargent, daughter of John Thomas and Sarah Ann Hill Sargent on May 5, 1884 in Matagorda. They were the parents of four children:
1. John Sargent Hamilton (February 6, 1885 - August 4, 1886)
2. Annie Jay Hamilton (July 30, 1888 - April 23, 1962), who married Dr. Samuel Ryall Sholars on June 15, 1910
3. Marguerite Josephine Hamilton (April 19, 1892 - October 11, 1980), who married Carroll Montgomery Gaines on November 26, 1918
4. Abel Head Pierce Hamilton (March 26, 1896 - October 3, 1968), who married Ruth Moore Cater on June 8, 1926.

Thomas J. and Fannie Hamilton moved to Bay City when the town was founded and became involved in the growth of the young city; however, their family was always their first priority. Thomas J. Hamilton, John W. Gaines and W. C. Carpenter became law partners. Thomas J. was county judge at the time of his death on September 5, 1900. He had been ill only a short time and his death was a shock to all. Fannie moved her family back to Matagorda where her father, step-mother and other members of the family lived. She and the children were active again in Christ Church, and the children participated in school, sports and social activities.

In 1910, Annie Jay married Dr. Samuel R. Sholars and moved to Bay City. She, Lurline Wadsworth, and others formed an all girl band called the "Melody Six." They played for dances in Bay City and traveled to neighboring towns to play. "Doc" Sholars usually drove them to and from their out-of-town engagements. Annie Jay, never seeking publicity, was always involved in helping those in need and "the down and out."

Marguerite married Carroll M. Gaines at Christ Church in Matagorda. They lived in Bay City, where Carroll was an attorney. Carroll M. Jr., was born in Bay City on November 26, 1919. In early 1921, they moved to San Antonio where Carroll became a junior partner in his father's firm. Their two daughters were born in San Antonio. Marguerite was born December 12, 1921 and Anne was born on February 29, 1924.

Abel married Ruth Moore Cater in San Antonio, and they later moved to Houston. Abel died three days after Ruth died, and both were buried in the Houston Veteran Cemetery.

Fannie Hamilton remained in Matagorda until she and Abel moved to San Antonio in the 1920s. She lived there until her death on March 12, 1926. She was buried beside her husband, Thomas J., in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City as their daughters and their husbands.
