In a small office on the corner of Fifth and Main a small built man carefully studies developments in the insurance business and quietly writes policies, aided by his son and two office workers.
A sign outside reads: Feather & Son, Insurance, and Joe Feather, who was born, the son of an insurance man in Berrien Springs, Michigan, in 1893, has been studying the business for a long time.
Joe’s son, Ed, a family man with a boy and a girl, is working closely with the business in view of the day when it’ll still be “Feather & Son,” but it’ll be his son, perhaps, who’s on the bottom of the sign.
Joe, who is a retired member of the Palacios Volunteer Fire Department, having served as secretary of the organization for 20 years, went to public schools in Michigan and Indiana.
He was raised in a family with three brothers, two who now live in Houston, and Warren A. “Shorty” Feather, who is city recorder here.
Joe’s father came to Palacios while a representative for the Coch [Koch?] Land Company, and the family moved to Palacios during the winter of 1909.
Joe’s father went into the real estate and insurance business here while his family grew up.
The Palacios businessman, as a young man, went back to Elkhart, Indiana for an appendectomy and decided to stay there. While working at the insurance business in Elkhart, he married his wife, Claire, and came back to Palacios in the fall of 1922.
Ed was born in Elkhart before the couple moved to Palacios. Joe and Claire took Ed and moved back to Indiana in the Spring of 1923, but came back here to live permanently in 1924. On October 16, 1926, their other son, Robert E. “Bob” was born.
Ed, who graduated from Palacios High School, attended business school at Massey Business College and then obtained his Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Houston.
He is a World War II veteran with 100 per cent disability.
Bob, who works for Ohio Oil Company in Seminole, Texas, is a graduate of Palacios High and the University of Houston. He is married and has two children.
Joe, along with his work with the fire department, was secretary and treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce for about 15 years and helped develop the paved highway system while working with the Chamber.
He can’t estimate the thousands of dollars in insurance he has sold during his long career, nor can he tell you the thousands of people he’s sold insurance to.
But one thing’s for sure, Feather & Son will probably be selling insurance for some time to come.
