Family of Joe Barnard Feather & May Claire Sanborn Feather

Traditional Name To Carry On

By Ed Cooper

In a small office on the corner of Fifth and Main a small built man carefully studies developments in the insurance business and quietly writes policies, aided by his son and two office workers.

A sign outside reads: Feather & Son, Insurance, and Joe Feather, who was born, the son of an insurance man in Berrien Springs, Michigan, in 1893, has been studying the business for a long time.

“I don’t have a lot of formal schooling, but I try to keep learning more about my trade day by day, so you might say I’ve been educated by the “school of hard knocks,” he says.

Joe’s son, Ed, a family man with a boy and a girl, is working closely with the business in view of the day when it’ll still be “Feather & Son,” but it’ll be his son, perhaps, who’s on the bottom of the sign.

Joe, who is a retired member of the Palacios Volunteer Fire Department, having served as secretary of the organization for 20 years, went to public schools in Michigan and Indiana.

He was raised in a family with three brothers, two who now live in Houston, and Warren A. “Shorty” Feather, who is city recorder here.

Joe’s father came to Palacios while a representative for the Coch [Koch?] Land Company, and the family moved to Palacios during the winter of 1909.

Joe’s father went into the real estate and insurance business here while his family grew up.

The Palacios businessman, as a young man, went back to Elkhart, Indiana for an appendectomy and decided to stay there. While working at the insurance business in Elkhart, he married his wife, Claire, and came back to Palacios in the fall of 1922.

Ed was born in Elkhart before the couple moved to Palacios. Joe and Claire took Ed and moved back to Indiana in the Spring of 1923, but came back here to live permanently in 1924. On October 16, 1926, their other son, Robert E. “Bob” was born.

Ed, who graduated from Palacios High School, attended business school at Massey Business College and then obtained his Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Houston.

He is a World War II veteran with 100 per cent disability.

Bob, who works for Ohio Oil Company in Seminole, Texas, is a graduate of Palacios High and the University of Houston. He is married and has two children.

Joe, along with his work with the fire department, was secretary and treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce for about 15 years and helped develop the paved highway system while working with the Chamber.

He can’t estimate the thousands of dollars in insurance he has sold during his long career, nor can he tell you the thousands of people he’s sold insurance to.

But one thing’s for sure, Feather & Son will probably be selling insurance for some time to come.

Final Rites Held Wednesday For Joe B. Feather

A lifetime of community service and personal accomplishments came to an end Monday afternoon with the death of Joe Barnard Feather. He died in the Bay View Hospital from a stroke suffered Sunday night.

Mr. Feather was born February 19, 1893, the son of M. K. and Sarah Feather, in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He attended public schools in Michigan and Indiana.

During the winter of 1909, Joe’s father, a representative of the Coch [Koch] Land Company, moved his family to Palacios. When a young man, Joe went back to Elkhart, Indiana for an operation and decided to stay there and work at the insurance business. While there he married his wife, Claire, and to this union, two sons, Edward M. and Robert E., were born. In 1924, he and his family moved to Palacios to live and went into the insurance business with his father.

Mr. Feather, a retired member of the Palacios Volunteer Fire Department, served as secretary of that organization for 20 years. He was also secretary and treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce for many years and while working with the chamber helped secure paved highways to Palacios. He was a member of the Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, serving as Past [Worthy] Patron in 1945-46. He was a Charter member of the local Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife, his mother, two sons, four grandchildren and three brothers, Russell, and Harold of Houston and Warren of Palacios.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Rayford Harris, assisted by Rev. L. W. Crouch, officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery with graveside services conducted by members of the Masonic Lodge.
