William Laban Ellis Family

The family of William Ellis moved to Palacios in 1905.

He established citrus and fig orchards.

He operated one of the early dairies in the area for three years, making deliveries from a horse-drawn milk wagon.

After selling the dairy business, he began truck farming with C. H. Chiles. They grew, gathered, packed and shipped fresh produce to northern cities.

Opened February 25, 1909

In 1909, William L. Ellis and his brother, R. M. Ellis, established Ellis Bros. mercantile store in the first brick building to be built in Palacios, selling a complete stock of groceries, fruits, confectionery and produce.

William Laban Ellis moved his family back to Palacios from Arkansas about 1925.

The Palacios Beacon issues for 1925 and 1926 are unavailable, so any information about the business interests after Mr. Ellis returned to Palacios could not be found.

The following information appeared in the September 1, 1927 issue of the Beacon.

IMPROVEMENTS BEING MADE AT BLUE BONNET

The interior decorations and wood work of the Blue Bonnet Confectionery are being given a new coat of paint this week that adds greatly to the appearance. The ceiling is of a pastel shade with the walls of a cream tint with artistic floral outline. Manager D. N. Tate is ever on the alert for improvements which lend attractiveness to his place of business as well as to add new equipment and conveniences from time to time, thus giving assurance of a modern confectionery with service unequaled anywhere, and his patrons and friends duly appreciate his efforts.
