Sebastian, Jr., also a carpenter, built the pews and many other items that are still in use in Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda. He was born in c 1829, lived in Matagorda, and died on July 22, 1909. He married Caroline Nolte (1845-May 12, 1906), who immigrated from Germany They were both buried in the Matagorda Cemetery They had six children: Emma, Ellen, Clarence, Louis Sebastian, Charles, and Amelia Caroline. Somehow along the way the spelling of the name was changed to end with an "h" instead of "k." At the age of eighteen , Louis Sebastian "Louie" (1866-July 18, 1930) was engaged in bringing the mail on horseback through Indian Territory He kept the black iron pot that he had used for cooking on the trail, and in later years he would build a fire outside and bake biscuits for his grandchildren. No biscuits ever tasted as good as those cooked in that black iron pot. Louie married Rhoda Dunbar (January 24, 1875-August 17, 1974) in Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda. They had four sons: Vernon (June 6, 1898-August 18,1965), Frank Hadden (April 29, 1901-August 8,1917), Boyd Audrey (June 29, 1902-August 5, 1917), and an older son, who died at birth. Hadden and Audrey died from typhoid fever only three days apart when they were sixteen and fifteen. They were buried in the Matagorda Cemetery. Vernon survived the dreadful disease, and on August 22, 1919, he married Mary Ottis from Wadsworth in the Catholic Church. Mary was born on January 5, 1902, in Okarche, Oklahoma, and came to Texas with her family at age five. Vernon and Mary had two children: Audrey H., born on December 2, 1920, and Hadden M., born on October 28, 1924. Both attended grammar school in Matagorda. Audrey attended high school in Gulf, Texas, and was graduated in Bay City. Hadden was graduated from Bay City High School. A favorite childhood memory was of Mary Dietrich cranking up the Model "A" Ford and driving the children to Wadsworth on Sunday mornings to attend the Catholic Church there.The Dietrichs lived near Matagorda on the bay shore where they had a chicken and dairy farm. After the 1934 hurricane that destroyed most of their belongings, they moved to town. They always owned about 500 white leghorn chickens, and after the storm, at least half of them were found washed into Tinker and Bernice Yeaman's yard in town, and were roosting on May Baxter's porch. That was a high tide!Audrey H. Dietrich became a registered nurse and was married in the Catholic Church to Wallace Nini. They settled in Aransas Pass and engaged in the shrimping industry. Hadden M. Dietrich married Dorothy Cole in the Catholic Church in Bay City. Hadden became a supervisor in the Manufacturing Department of Phillips Petroleum Company They had two sons, Hadden, Jr., and Kelly Cole. Hadden, Jr. "Champ" , attended school in Bay City and was graduated from the University of Houston. He became a pharmacist in Katy, Texas. He married Catherine "Kathy" Teddar in the Catholic Church in Bay City. They had two children: Zackary David and Shelby Nicole, the first girl in the immediate family in 59 years! Kelly Cole, attended school in Bay City and the University of Houston, majoring in Business Management. He was employed by Exxon in Houston.

Perhaps one of the most lamentable cases that has been before our attention in some time is the loss to the Dietrich family of Matagorda of their two sons in the same week and the close call of the third, who was saved by a marvelous surgical operation. The boys were effected with typhoid fever and were brought to Bay City. One son by the name of Audrey died last Monday and one by the name of Hadden died Tuesday night. Vernon Dietrich was slowly passing away when the attending physicians decided top operate, believing that he had a perforation of the intestines. Dr. Loos of Palacios was called over ad the operation was preformed Wednesday night. The doctors cut in to his bowels and sewed up a long gash in the intestines about one and one half inches. At this time it is believed that he will recover. At any rate he now has a chance for his life, when there was none whatever without the operation. The New Era hopes that he will recover and that the wounds in the hearts of the parents, who have undergone so much suffering lately, will soon heal and that they will be saved any further trouble.--Bay City Tribune. Latest reports are that the young man is making good progress toward recovery. Mrs. Dietrich is a sister of Mrs. Howard Stapp of this city.

Mary Ottis Dietrich, 98, of Bay City, passed away Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in Bay City. She was born Jan. 5, 1902, in Okarche, Okla. to Joseph Ottis and Mary Janssen Ottis. She was a lifelong resident of Matagorda County and was a retired sales clerk, having worked in various apparel stores around the square. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and a member of the Holy Cross Altar Society. She is survived by: daughter, Audrey Nini and husband Wallace of Bay City; son, Hadden Dietrich and wife Dorothy of Bay City; grandchildren, Hadden Dietrich, Jr. and wife Kathy of Katy, and Cole Dietrich of Houston; great-granddaughter, Shelby Dietrich, and great-grandson Zachary Dietrich, both of Katy; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Janssen Ottis; three brothers and two sisters.
The rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct.
24, 2000, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be
held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Holy Cross Catholic
Church with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment will
follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Pallbearers will be
Hadden Dietrich, Jr., Cole Dietrich, Zachary Dietrich, Harold Ottis,
Thomas Ottis, and Jon Abshier. |
