Joe Rushin Barnett

Joseph Rushin Barnett, aged 73 years, 10 months and 27 days, died at the home of his son in Bay City, Texas, early Friday morning, May 10. He had been ill the past three months and nine days, and his passing on to his eternal home was not unexpected.

The body was prepared for burial and brought to the Palacios Funeral Home where services were held at 10 o’clock Saturday morning conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Interment was made in the Palacios cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

Mr. Barnett was born in Kaufman, Texas, where he married and reared his family. About thirteen years ago he came to Palacios, and made this city his home since. Soon after coming here he was made a peace officer and served as a deputy the majority of the time. He was a peace loving citizen, but was never negligent in doing his duty.

For ten years Mr. Barnett served as janitor of the Palacios school building, now known as the Linnie Wolf school, and was familiarly and lovingly known by the pupils as “Grandpa Barnett.”

In early life he became a member of the Christian Church and lived according to its teachings.

On the 27th of last March, Mr. and Mrs. Barnett celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. To this union were born five children, two have preceded their father, one an infant daughter, and a son, Porter, who died a few years ago.

Besides the wife, Mrs. Catherine Barnett, one daughter, Mrs. Florence Shannon, of Houston, two sons, Guy Barnett, of Bay City, and Lee Barnett, of Canton, and a number of grand children survive. To these we join the host of friends in extending heartfelt sympathy.

Mrs. Lois Powell Barnett

Mrs. Lois Powell Barnett, beloved wife of Guy H. Barnett, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Malcomb Cavallin in the Turtle Bay Community last Friday, following an illness of several months’ duration.

The deceased was born on September 7 1910, and died July 18, 1930, not quite reaching the score period of life. She was the daughter of Mrs. Malcomb Cavallin and had spent the greater part of her life in this community, attending our high school and was a member of the senior class of 1929.

On January first, this year, she was united in marriage to Guy H. Barnett of this city, with fond hopes for the future, and it seems doubly sad that one so young should thus be the victim of the grim reaper, death.

Funeral services were held at the Cavallin home Saturday at 3:30 P. M., conducted by Rev. Carrol B Ray of the First Baptist Church and Rev. M. C. Stearns, of the Methodist church, after which interment was made in the Palacios cemetery. A large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends were in attendance and the floral offerings were numerous and very beautiful.

The heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the grief stricken young husband, mother and other relatives in this hour of deep sorrow.

Coy Barnett

The home going of Coy Barnett came Saturday noon, March 23rd, after an illness of twelve days. Coy was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Barnett and was 11 years, 8 months of age. The funeral was held Sunday at 1:30 in the home, conducted by Rev. J. A. Derrick, and Rev. F. G. Clark, after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Palacios cemetery in the presence of a large number of friends who gathered to pay loving tribute to Coy and give words of comfort to the bereaved parents and family.

Coy is survived by his mother, father, two small brothers and grandparents. His true loyal heart made him a good son, a kind brother and a loyal pal to his schoolmates. His young life of only 11 years was full and complete and his sweet influence will live on in the hearts and lives of those left behind.

Like a beautiful rose bud plucked on earth and transplanted in the Heavenly garden to bloom and blossom. When life’s duties are over and we slip away to meet him he will be waiting to welcome us where there’ll be no parting.
