News has just reached the city of the death of Mr. W. S. Terry which occurred at the home of his son near Blessing this (Monday) morning at 10:20 o'clock. The funeral services will be held at the R. E. Terry home near Blessing Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock under the direction of Walker-Matchett, funeral directors. This splendid man and citizen died in his 87th year. He was born and reared to manhood in Mississippi, coming to Texas after the Civil War and settling at Blessing many years ago. He, at one time, served his precinct as commissioner. Mr. Terry served the South in a Mississippi regiment which was attached to Longstreet's Corps. He attended many Confederate reunions and never tired of singing the praises of his dear Southland. Mr. Terry was the finest of men. He made and held friends and thought them all priceless. His neighbors loved him in his quiet affectionate way of mingling with them. His dealings were above reproach and his associates regarded him as a man of matchless integrity. Surviving are two sons Percy and R. E. and four daughters, Miss Blake Terry, Mrs. Clyde Peoples, Mrs. Lamar McGuire and Mrs. Blanche Bowers. To these the Tribune, joined by the hosts of friends, extend the deepest sympathy. Mrs. Baker has had most of this Nativity scene for five years, and has added something new each year, either to replace some item or change the scene a little. Five years ago, she bought the paper figures of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the two Shepherds from a U Build It company in California. the figures were roughly cut out and pasted on Masonite, and after Mr. C. R. Chastain cut out the outlined lifelike figures, they were varnished with clear water proof varnish to withstand the weather. The original angel was blown away during the storm, but the other figures which were wrapped in a heavy quilt in the garage, were saved, though the quilt and figures were quite dampened, no damage was done. After the storm, her brother, R. E. Terry, was cleaning out his attic and was going to discard two old dolls; one a 25-year-old Shirley Temple and the other a 30-year-old, minus hair, but with the rest of the body in good condition. These had been play things of Joyce Terry Meitzen. Both dolls were dressed as angels with the Shirley Temple one placed on the north side of the scene, and the larger one hung in the center under the wreath with the words Silent Night. This main doll was dressed in what was a nylon curtain, and its head wrapped in a silk scarf; the wings were made of foil. The three lighted wreaths were hand made, as were the messages "Peace on Earth" and "Good Will to Men." The two large sheep and two baby lambs were designed from memory on masonite by Mrs. Baker. They are so lifelike one almost expected to hear the baby lambs bleat for their mother. The scene covered the entire front yard, with the two tall cedar trees giving depth to the scene. The figures and wreaths could not be fastened to the house, so Mrs. Baker made a frame that covered the two front windows of her duplex. The overhead shining star was made of foil, with an old lamp stand forming the base. The large Shepherd's staff was an old brook stick with twisted wire forming the crook.
From such an odd assortment of material, Mrs.
Baker put her time, talent and lots of thought into making one
of the most beautiful, realistic Nativity scenes seen in
Palacios during the holiday season.--Palacios Beacon,
