El Maton, dating back to 1905, is situated twelve miles west of Bay City on FM 1095. El Maton is a Spanish name meaning “the killer,” which was bestowed on the community by the Missouri-Pacific Railroad Company. The town haw several legendary versions telling why it is so named. According to one version, it is said that a group of Mexicans, who had been drinking, got into an argument and began fighting on the spot where the railroad track now crosses FM 1095. Several of the group were killed in the action, and thus the place became known by the Spanish words “El Maton.” Another legend involves a railroad accident. In this version a Mexican man was accidentally killed in 1905, when his foot got caught on a rail, and a handcart ran over him. Some say El Maton got its name from the slaughterhouse which was once situated in this area. In the early days cattle were hilled here only for their hides and tallow. There was a rendering plant near the present Townsite. The tallow was used in making candles and soap. The present town of El Maton and the surrounding area were once a grassy lowland prairie without a house or building between the townsite and Wilson Creek. All the land within this area was owned by the Pierce family who used it for grazing lands for their livestock. Many acres were later sold to the Ward Cattle Company which then exploited the grasslands. El Maton was once the site of stock pens owned by the various ranchers of the area. The concrete foundation of a grain silo still lies in the Emil Balusek yard. When the Missouri-Pacific was induced to lay tracks to Blessing, the railroad company built a large switch here. This shipping point for rice and cattle was at last called El Maton by the railroad men. In 1905, R. C. Roddy built a large store in El Maton. The first postmaster, Boyd I. Horn, was appointed November 23, 1915, making El Maton an official town. He was succeeded by R. C. Roddy in May, 1916. The store became the post office in 1916 and was still being used in that capacity in 1985. On February 12, 1927, V. Lodge Kopecky became postmaster. He served until Joe Lucas was appointed April 4, 1934. In 1925 the Ward Cattle Company sold out to the Wilson Estate which proceeded to bring in Czech families from neighboring communities. The area soon was filled with settlers from Sealy, Somerville, Caldwell and other area. In 1927 Mr. and Mrs. Rudolf Stasta, Sr., were among the incoming settlers. They built the Stasta Cotton Gin in 1930, which was first powered by crude oil. In 1929 and 1930 farm crops suffered because of extremely wet weather. Farmers were hurt financially again in 1932 and 1933 by the depression. As a result, much of the land the farmers had purchased through loans again became the property of the Wilson Estate. In 1933 Alfred Kopecky built a grocery store on State Highway 35 opposite the north entrance to FM 1095. The Travelers Inn Dance Hall and Tavern was already in operation next to the site when the store was built. In 1936 Kopecky moved the store to a site one mile south down the farm-to-market road. The store was purchased in 1949 by Edwin Junek. A blacksmith shop was once operated by Emil L. Balusek. He saved the life of a friend who had been bitten by a rattlesnake and became a sort of hero to many El Maton residents. After Balusek died in 1960, the blacksmith shop was operated by “Doc” Lane until 1964. Late in 1936, six World War I veterans purchased land in the El Maton area with the aid of the Federal Securities Agency (FSA). The families of Frank Taska, Leo Johnson, Sidney Lister, Martin Nelson, Walter Scott and Richard Brown still owned property in this area in 1985. The El Maton National Hall was moved to its present site one-half mile south of State Highway 35 on FM 1095 from property which belonged to Louis Popek in 1985. It was used as a school for many years in both locations and later as a recreation center owned by the Czech organization known variously as the SPJST, the KJT and the KJZT. In 1985 it was owned by Joe Kalas and still operated as a dance hall.

"Aunt Molly" returned home Saturday after a week's visit. Mr. E. R. Bell and family visited relatives at Lake Austin last Monday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glaze visited relatives in El Campo during the week-end. Mary Katherine Barlow spent Sunday afternoon with Pauline and Ethel Smith. Joe Smith of Blessing, spent Sunday with home folks here. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glaze were business visitors in Blessing on Wednesday afternoon. The junior boys from Midfield, came here to play basketball with the El Maton junior boys. Midfield planned to win but they were defeated 12 to 7.

Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glaze spent the week-end in Houston. Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Bell and family and Mr. R. J. Turner of Lake Austin, visited here last Thursday. "Aunt Mollie" returned home with Mr. and Mrs. Bell. The El Maton junior boys played basketball with Blessing last Tuesday. The game was very interesting. The score was 10-9 in El Maton's favor. Misses Myrtle and Leona Smith spent Sunday in Blessing with Miss Stella Rickaway. Little Martha Mendrik had the misfortune of breaking her arm last Thursday afternoon. We are glad to say, although she has been suffering a lot, that she is getting along nicely. We hope that she will soon be able to start back to school. Miss Stella Rickaway of Blessing spent Sunday evening with Myrtle and Leona Smith. Mr. E. R. Bell and son, Blucher, visited in Blessing Sunday afternoon.

The other was with Blessing. The Blessing boys were defeated 8-9 and the girls were defeated 14-24. Mr. E. G. Nance of Blessing visited El Maton school last Wednesday. The county health nurse visited this school the past week. Mrs. Arthur Thomas and children visited Mrs. Ray Williams on Monday afternoon. Mrs. Garner of Blessing visited in El Maton last Thursday. Miss Opal Phillips was a guest of Mrs. Smith Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Smith and daughters, attended church services in Markham Sunday morning and in the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Williams visited with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thomas Sunday night. Mr. H. W. Walker was a business visitor to Blessing Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Glayse and Mrs. Smith visited Mr. and Mrs. Mandrik Monday evening. Martha is doing well with her broken arm. Mrs. D. Baston visited with Mrs. V. L. Kopecky Saturday. A number of our folks attended the basketball game between Blessing and Markham at Markham on Monday night. Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Oscar, were visitors to Bay City Wednesday. Some of our folks attended the wedding feast and dance at Ashby, Tuesday night. Little Junior Smith who has been on the sick list is some better at this writing. Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Walker were business visitors to Blessing on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glaze were week-end visitors to El Campo. We had a regular Sunday night rain Sunday night. Joe Smith who works in Blessing was home Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thomas and children are spending the evening with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Williams Monday night. Mr. Frank Millard has been spending most of his time the past few days with his father in Blessing who is very ill. Those who enjoyed the day Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glaze and Misses Myrtle and Leona Smith returned to El Maton late Friday afternoon after spending a week with friends and relatives at Sabinal. Mr. Arthur Thomas and Miss Leona Thomas and Miss Leona Smith are on the sick list this week, but they are able to be up at the time of this writing. Miss Getha Bell from Kingsville came home Friday to spend a few days before returning to Kingsville for summer school. Eula Alice Thomas spent a few days of the past week in Palacios with her cousin, LaVern Walker. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glaze left for El Campo Friday night where they will visit Mr. Glaze's parents before leaving for San Marcos. Mr. E. R. Bell, Getha, E. R. Jr., and Blucher, spent the day last Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Smith and family. Mr. H. W. Walker's home caught fire Sunday afternoon, but the fire was put out before much damage was done. The farmers all seem to be proud of the beautiful weather. They are all busy in their fields.

Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glaze who are attending school at San Marcos were visitors here for a few minutes Sunday morning. Misses Myrtle and Leona Smith, who have been visiting in Houston for the past two and a half weeks, returned home Saturday morning. They were accompanied home by Mrs. Mary Loman, Mr. Frank Thielan, Frank Thielan, Jr. and Mr. Dick Lawson, all of Houston. We were very sorry to hear of the death of Mr. J. E. Millard of Blessing, who is well known in this community. He was the father of Mr. Frank Millard of this town. Mrs. Arthur Thomas visited Mrs. Roy Williams Monday afternoon. Mrs. Mary Loman, Mr. Frank Thielan, Mr. Frank Thielan, Jr., and Mr. Dick Lawson returned to Houston Monday after spending a few days with relatives here.

Cronan, Miss Lucile Hale Conger and Earl Hale of Markham, were visiting with Mrs.. Frank Millard Saturday evening. Mr. Joe Kopecky came home Saturday from Houston. He left Monday for Waco, where he will wrestle on Monday night. There was an ice cream supper given in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Baston Saturday night. Miss Opal Phillips and Mrs. Nora Phillips spent Thursday with Miss Lydia Kopecky. Edna and Wilma Baston had a jolly time Sunday as they were dinner guests of Ollie Kopecky. The crops in this section of the county are all in very good shape. Some corn is made and is as good as any one could wish. Mr. T. B. Smith spent Sunday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. P. McGinnis of Markham. Mrs. J. E. Millard of Bay City is spending this week in the home of Mr. Ed Barlow. Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Smith, Myrtle, Ethel and Junior were business visitors in Wadsworth Saturday. While there, they called on Mr. and Mrs. Travis Thompson on the place where we always get the good cake and coffee and such a warm welcome. Mr. Henry Rugeley, Mr. Bert Carr, of Bay City were business visitors at Mr. Jack Reeves Friday. Mr. Rugeley bought some fine stock cattle from Mr. Reeves who has some very pretty stock. The rice around here is looking good and seems to be getting plenty of water. Mr. Joe Smith was a business visitor to Blessing Monday morning.

Miss Julia Marek of Caldwell, who is going to be a teacher in our school this year, was visiting relatives and getting acquainted with school patrons last week returned home Monday. Mr. John Lastovica visited his father over the week-end who is ill in Sealy. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Balusek, who spent last week in Cameron with homefolks, has returned home reporting a pleasant trip. Rev. C. N. Wylie of Houston held services at the schoolhouse on Tuesday evening, he delivered a wonderful message to a large crowd. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hale of Markham attended services here on Tuesday evening. Mr. C. M. Herrington of Midfield was a caller here on Wednesday evening. Miss Getha Bell motored to Houston on Saturday to do some Christmas shopping. Mr. Will Schier, the Central Power and Light man of Palacios, was attending to business here Thursday. Mr. Burnes Logan of Blessing was a business visitor Thursday and Friday. Mr. Jack Reeves was on the sick list last week. Mr. Abraham Smith of Midfield was a visitor here on Monday. Mr. Paul Smyth of Palacios was a pleasant visitor in the home of Mr. and D. L. Boston Tuesday. Mr. Leslie Glayze, Mr. T. B. Smith and Mr. Charles Barlow drove to Mr. B. B. Whites of Blessing on Monday afternoon to get a piano to use in our schoolhouse. The piano being the property of the Blessing Baptist Church. Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Walker and son, Grover, of Palacios were visiting relatives here Tuesday. Mr. M. Frick sold a truck load of calves Monday. In spite of the bad weather on Sunday there were eighteen at Sunday School Sunday afternoon. Mr. A. R. Matthes of Blessing was a visitor at Mr. A. C. Thomas’ Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glayze visited with Mr. and Mrs. John Lastivaco on Thursday evening. A number of families here have butchered and canned meat lately. Little Allan Day Longuet is suffering from a bad spell of whooping cough. He is the only case that has developed so far. Mr. and Mrs. B. Foster and family will move to Bay City this week. We will surely miss Hughie, Hilda and Melvin at school and Sunday School, too, but we wish them success where ever they go. Mr. Howard of Houston, the International representative of this district was a business visitor here on Thursday. Mr. Leslie Glayze and Mr. T. B. Smith drove to Markham Wednesday evening to attend a business meeting at the Baptist church there. Mrs. H. W. Walker and Miss Elliott left Thursday for Fort Worth for a few days visit. Mr. Oscar Smith and Mr. Charles Barlow each are taking part in a play to be given at the schoolhouse Christmas as there is not enough large boys in school to take all the parts. They are practicing every day. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hale of Markham spent the week-end here with homefolks. Mr. T. B. Smith and Mr. Joe Smith were business visitors to Palacios on Friday. Those from here that attended church services at the Catholic Church in Blessing Thursday were Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Lastivaco and family, Mr. Frank Varva and family, Mr. and Mrs. john Hickl, Sr., and family, Mr. and Mrs. John Orsak and family and Mr. and Mrs. John Hamala and family. Mr. and Mrs. Genzer and family of Ashby have moved to El Maton. We give them a cordial welcome. The school teachers have finished their second six weeks examinations. Those that are on the A honor roll are Ruby Swenson, Agnes Marek and Jessie Tweedle. Those that are classed on the B honor roll are Eula Alice Thomas, Verna Junek, Zan Merritt, Bennie Tomek, Mary Swenson and Robert Thomas. We feel very proud of these little folks. The new pupils in school are Georgia Genzer, Johnnie Polensky, Jimmie Vacek, Cily Sipula, Frances Polensky, Sivy Sipula, Stanley Polensky, Erwin Genzer, Adolph Genzer. We now have one hundred pupils enrolled in our school and expect more to come about the first of January. We give all these new pupils hearty welcome. The colored school has some new pupils too.

Mr. and Mrs. Toy Phillips have moved from here to Sargent where they will make their home next year. We regret losing these fine folks. May success follow them is our wish. Mr. Bill Dluhoss was a business visitor to Blessing Saturday afternoon. Mr. John Kopac is building him a new house at Tide Haven. Mrs. Leslie Glayze and Mrs. T. B. Smith were business visitors at Bay City Tuesday morning. Mr. Velmo McGinnis is operating Commissioner Sam F. Hale’s dragline to clean out ditches on the E. Maton farm. Some such work was done here in the summer. It will all be a great advantage to farming. Rev. R. L. Byrd of Ganado was a visitor in our school Tuesday. He told many interesting things to the children Tuesday evening. Reverend Byrd was a guest in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glayze. At seven-thirty a large crowd gathered at the schoolhouse to hear Reverend Byrd deliver a gospel message which was enjoyed by all who heard it. We gladly welcome him back to see us. Wednesday the Blessing junior basketball boys came out to play a game of ball with our junior boys. A good game was played, but score being 9 to 12 in favor of the visiting team. Mrs. T. B. Smith and Mr. Oscar Smith were shoppers in Markham on Saturday evening. Wednesday evening at 8:30 a crowd of friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glayze in honor of Mr. Glayze’s birthday, it all being a surprise to Mr. Glayze. He was unable to understand the reason for so many visitors at the same time, but soon the birthday cake was brought in with pink candles burning brightly. This gave away the secret. After the candles were blown out four tables of forty-two were arranged in the house, then all joined in playing forty-two until ten-thirty; at this time all the happy guests were served hot chocolate and coffee and cake. Those enjoying this social were Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Black and two children, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hale of Markham, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Glayze, Mr. and Mrs. Bonner, Matthew and little daughter and Miss Nettie Glayze of El Campo, Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Smith, Misses Myrtle Pauline and Ethel Smith, Miss Muriel Crouch, Miss Katherine Barlow and Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glayze. A very nice time was enjoyed by all. All the guests returned to their home at a late hour wishing Mr. Glayze many more happy birthdays. Mr. Gus Miller of El Campo was visiting with friends here last week. Mrs. Jerry Layak is on the sick list this week. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Millard were shopping in Bay City on Thursday. Mrs. A. E. Hale of Markham visited with the Homefolks here Thursday. Mr. Kimble Roberts of Markham, was a business visitor here Friday. Miss Alma Varva spent the weekend with Miss Pauline Smith. Miss Myrtle Smith spent Sunday in Markham with Miss Dora Mae Huddleston. Mr. and Mrs. V. L. Kopecky entertained with a party at their home Sunday evening in honor of Mr. Kopecky’s birthday. Music and dancing were the chief entertainment. A large birthday cake was cut and served to the following guests: Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Walker, Miss Elliott, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Domorod and two sons, John and Antoni; Mrs. Frances Kopecky, Mr. Ernest Kopecky, Mr. Arnold Sivek and Miss Della Sivek. All had a joyful evening and wished for Mr. Kopecky many happy birthdays. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Domorod and family of Sealy have just recently moved to El Maton to farm next year. We give you all a hearty welcome. Mr. Bob Estilll, Mr. John Tweedle and Mr. Newsom went to Red Bluff, fishing on Wednesday. They made a good catch, bringing home about fifty pounds of red fish, and all their neighbors feasted on fish the next day. Those from here who drove to Markham to church services Sunday night were Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glayze, Mrs. Mary Loman, Mr. Joe Smith, Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Smith, Misses Myrtle, Pauline and Ethel Smith and Miss Alma Varva. Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Phillips and family are moving to Sargent to farm next year. We regret very much losing this family. May success follow them. We will miss Jack and J. P., Jr., in our school. Mr. Tom and Mr. Henry Watkins were visitors here on Sunday. Dr. S. A. Morton of Bay City was a professional visitor here Thursday. The Ashby school professor assisted by Mr. E. M. Spoor and Mr. John Williams brought the Ashby junior boys and girls up here Friday for two games of ball with our ball players. The girls played first, their score being ten to twenty-two in favor of the home team. All the girls need to be congratulated in the way they played. The boys then played an interesting game, their score being fifteen to seventeen in favor of Ashby. A large crowd was gathered at the schoolhouse to see the games. Come back again Ashby. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sipula of Damon have just moved into our community to make their home. We give them a cordial welcome. There were a large crowd at Sunday School on Sunday. The song practice on Wednesday night is well attended. On Dec. 1 an eight-pound girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Balusek. Mother and daughter doing nicely. The young lady accompanied by her father went to Blessing on Saturday morning to be christened in the church. Mr. John Turneaux, Mr. Roy Mounger and some of their friends of Dallas came down Sunday to enjoy a few days bird hunting, this being their annual vacation. While here they will be guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Walker during the day, driving to Blessing each evening where they will be registered in the hotel there. Friday evening Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Glayze entertained with a party at their home. The party was given for the senior and intermediate Sunday School classes. Miscellaneous games were played in the house until a late hour then the hostess served as refreshments hot cocoa and pineapple cake those enjoying this party were Misses Lydia Kopecky, Hilda Lee Boston, Alma Varva, Mary Lijsol, Maggie Goode, Ethel Smith, Katherine Barlow, Edna Boston, Myrtle Smith, Eva Tweedle, Eula Alice Thomas, Elizabeth Lijsol, Pauline Smith, Misters Arnold Sivak, Joe Smith, Charles Barlow, Jack Phillips, Eugene Thomas, Bulcher Bell, James Barlow, Adolph Lijsol and Oscar Smith. A very enjoyable evening was spent by all. The party adjourned at the midnight hour.

The program and Christmas tree was held Friday evening at the school house, the program was well given by the children, the heavy rain that fell Friday evening kept a number of people from attending. Some that did come wore rubber boots and walked. The teachers and children need to be congratulated for their splendid work. The most beautiful part on the program was the star drill rendered by seven girls each dressed in crepe paper dresses of rainbow colors. One girl was dressed in white crepe paper and held a bright star with six stringers hanging from it. The other six girls held to the stringers and marched around by music. This was beautiful, this being the closing of the program. Santa Claus came in to distribute the many presents on the beautiful tree. The tree was heavily loaded and the children enjoyed Santa very much as he was a jolly fellow.
Mrs. D. M. Walker, Miss Esther and Miss Grace Walker of Blessing, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Williams and Roy Williams were guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Thomas Sunday, this being Mr. and Mrs. Thomas' wedding anniversary. They celebrated two events in one.
Mr. Leslie Glayze left here Saturday to spend Christmas at El Campo with his parents. Tuesday he expects to drive to Sabinal to join Mrs. Glayze for a visit the remainder of the week and will come home about the first of January to begin school.

The play will be a good one and well worth the small price. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Longuet and Mr. Longuet of Houston were Sunday guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Longuet. Rev. and Mrs. R. E. Reverend Black preached a very inspiring sermon to a large congregation. A committee has been appointed to plan a Mother's Day program for Mother's Day. Mrs. Leola Cox Sides met January 3 with the El Maton Home Demonstration Club. She gave a demonstration on clothes closets. It is well to keep in mind that “A place for everything and everything in its place,” is a good time saver. Each bedroom should have a clothes closet—one that is two and one-half feet deep and six feet long is very convenient. Shelves, shoe racks, hat racks, tie racks and clothes rod on which to hang garments help to keep everything in place. “Pasteboard boxes fitted into compartments for small articles such as gloves, handkerchiefs, toilet articles, etc. help to keep your dresser drawers organized,” says Mrs. Sides. "Curtains in the bedroom soften the hard lines of the window frame," quoted Mrs. Leola Cox Sides to the women of the El Maton and Collegeport home demonstration clubs, when they met with Mrs. Sterling Landers, July 17. The bedroom curtains are also useful in securing privacy and subduing the light. Simple gloss curtains of scrim, dotted Swiss, dimity, grenadine and gauze are light and launder easily. The curtains may be hung in straight lines (tailored style), or the ruffle ones may be tied back, Priscilla style. The clubs had sixteen attending the meeting including Mrs. Alfred Kopecky, a new member. Mrs. Sterling Landers, club delegate to the Short Course, gave an interesting report on "Looking Your Best." "Diet of Texans." "Gainesville Community Circus" and "Recreation," to the women of the El Maton Home Demonstration Club, when they met with Mrs. Joe Lucas, August 7. Every woman should look her best. A woman should dress and make-up according to her age. Use powder and rouge so as to appear natural. "Do not come out looking like a marshmallow with a cherry stuck on top." Mrs. Landers will continue her report at the next meeting, August 21, at Mrs. Alfred Kopecky's.

In spite of bad weather some thirty visitors came to the El Maton Home Demonstration club's Achievement, September 24. The crowd met at the El Maton school. After a few games and songs they went to see the improved bedroom of Mrs. Joe Lucas. Then they inspected the school lunch display and the salads of O. F. Halik. From there the crowd went back to the school to enjoy some more games and refreshments of cookies and grape juice.

"Country homes need a different type of landscaping than city homes," said Mrs. Leola Cox Sides when she gave a demonstration on "tying the house down" at the home of Mrs. O. F. Havlik, Nov. 6. Select the right plants for the foundation planting. Yaupon, wax leaf ligustrum, bridal wreath, yellow jasmine and coral berry are good. The demonstrations were enjoyed by Mesdames Alfred Kopecky, Sterling Landers, C. O. Legg, O. F. Havlik and Joe Lucas, and Misses Vlasta Kopecky, Eva Howard. Mesdames T. S. Hermansen, Martin Nelson, R. Guynes and George Nelson were visitors. At the previous meeting the following officers were elected: Mrs. Sterling Landers, president; Mrs. O. F. Havlik, vice-president; Mrs. Joe Lucas, reporter and council delegate; Mrs. C. O. Legg, alternate council delegate.

Guests at the Edwin Hurta home in El Maton over the weekend were, Mr. and Mrs. William Herrin of Houston, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Kacer and Gary of Pasadena, Mr. and Mrs. George Hejtmanek and sons of Ashby, Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Sedlacek and children of Bay City. Sunday afternoon they all attended the bridal shower for Miss Frances Ann Swinkey. Those from El Maton attending the bridal shower for Miss Frances Swinky, bride-elect of Raymond Dusek were: Mrs. Alfred Kopecky, Mrs. John Kopecky, Mrs. J. O. Thompson, Mrs. Emil Sliva, Mrs. Edwin Hurta, Mrs. Milton Vavra, Mrs. Joe Lucas, Mrs. Tom Havel, Mrs. E. F. Vavra, Mrs. Franklin Vavra, Mrs. M. W. Jalufka and Mrs. Helen Ackerman.

We wish our Uncle Archie Orsak a belated Happy Birthday We're sorry but we forgot. How many does that make you, Uncle Archie? Is it 39 again? The members of the 4-H Clubs of this area have entered their records in a contest and the following have won a trip to Leaky, Texas; Gloria Junek, Cynthia Junek, Fayelinn Junek, Joyce Junek, LaVern Hurta, Billy Hejtmanek, Gloria and Cynthia have decided not to go. Miss Eileen Junek took her little sister, Gail, to the doctor Tuesday to get a tetanus booster after she stepped on a piece of wire. The doctor had to do minor surgery on the wound. Gail is now at home doing fine. Joe Junek Jr. and Raymond Hickl went fishing and within an hour caught two catfish weighing a total of eighteen pounds. Suzanna Saha and Rosie Kacer went with David Kucera and Julius Pavlas to attend the Boling graduation, Tuesday. Charles Hickl, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Hickl, is graduating from the University of Texas in Austin this Saturday, May 31. President Johnson will be the main speaker at this event. Congratulations Charles. Janet Sue Foltyn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Foltyn, participated in her first dancing recital Thursday night in Bay City at the Bay City High School Auditorium. Susie and Val McDonald went to Huntsville to look for a place to live. Mr. Alfonse Krenek, the teacher, along with his class at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing gave a party Sunday, May 24, honoring the Catholic seniors and their dates. Nearly all were present and those there can tell how very sorry the others will be for not being there. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Hurta gave a dinner Sunday, May 24, honoring their niece, Miss Susie Hurta, of Midfield, a May graduate of Tidehaven High School. Those present to enjoy the dinner were Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Hurta and family along with their little granddaughter, Terry Hebert of ElCampo, Judy Gunther of Midfield, R. A. Fellers of Markham, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Hurta, Jr. of Bay City, Mr. Louis Hurta of Midfield. In the later afternoon, after skiing and boating, Henry Havel and Dennis Bartosh are supper with Edwin Hurta Jr. and the E. E. Hurtas.

All the farmers of this area have finally gotten their answer to many prayers. We have finally gotten rain. It rained more in places than in others but it all helped and we can still use a little more for the corn as well as the cotton before it gets to blooming full blast. The graduation at the University of Texas, from which one of the members of our community, Charles Hickl, was graduating last Saturday night, was delayed for an hour because of rain and hail. The graduation was going to be out of doors where they had thousands of chairs set up among the trees on the campus of the University of Texas but because of the bad weather they were forced indoors into the auditorium where the President of the United States, Mr. Johnson, along with his wife, Lady Bird, was the guest speaker. Congratulations to Charles as well as his parents. All should be justly proud of such a great accomplishment in his life. The family of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hickl attended a family reunion in LaGrange. They all had a very nice time. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Stasta of Bay City, son and daughter-in-law of Mrs. Rudolf Stasta of El Maton, are the proud parents of a little girl. We wish to congratulate Mrs. Rudolf Stasta on being a grandmother for the first time. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Naiser and their son, Todd, were down visiting Mr. and Mrs. Frank Henkes this last weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Henkes' daughter, Mary Ann, who just came home Saturday from a visit to Houston, left again Sunday to spend a week with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Naiser. Wayne and Garry Henkes, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Henkes of Blessing stayed with their grandma and grandpa, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Henkes of El Maton while their parents went to Cuero for a visit to see relatives. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hickl who had a little boy last Wednesday. They named the little boy Mark.

Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Helms of El Maton had as visitors this weekend: Mrs. and Mrs. J. C. Gibson, her daughter, Mrs. Norman Garney, and her husband and Mr. and Mrs. William Epps from Houston. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lepenesky from Collegeport and their two nieces. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hahn are down for a few days to visit with some relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hahn. Rose Mary and Mary Louis Hamala, and Betty, Florance and Gail Hahn are spending a few days with the family of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hahn. The Hahn's had their family reunion this last Sunday. Forty-five families were present. Mr. and Mrs. H. Taska, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Taska and Ellis, and Mrs. Joe Lucas attended the dedication services of Wesley Brethren Church in Wesley. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Briscoe of San Antonio are visiting the Joe Lucas's this week. Those attending Collegeport Day Dinner in Collegeport were Mr. and Mrs. S. Landers and Mrs. Addie Foster. Evelyn Balusek started her first day of work at the First National Bank Tuesday morning. Eileen Janek, Evelyn Balusek, Frankie Michalek and Jimmy Michalik went to Matagorda Beach Sunday. They all had a real nice time. Mr. James Hickl's old white turkey got away and ran all over El Maton Wednesday morning. Jay and Joyce Junek, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Junek of El Maton left this morning for HEB camp at Leaky, a small town near San Antonio, for their 4-H trip this year. Gloria Junek has been feeling ill the last few days and was unable to attend the Catholic Summer School classes at St. Peter's in Blessing. Agustin Alanese had the misfortune of wrecking his truck with a large load of watermelons on it. The truck was damaged quite badly so he sold it for junk along with the watermelons.

Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Lezak left Houston by jet on June 6th on a family excursion trip to Mesa, Arizona where they visited Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Lezak and saw their 19th grandchild, Matthew Dean Lezak, 4 months, for the first time. They returned Monday and reported having had a wonderful time. Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Baker and family visited Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Jones in Mesquite, over the weekend and had a very nice time. Jim David Jones came back to visit the Bakers and Carolyn Baker stayed in Mesquite. Monday the Baker family went to San Antonio to visit Mrs. Baker's brother and their family. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cameron, and to attend HemisFair. Marilyn stayed home on this later trip because traveling doesn't agree with her, but she enjoyed staying with Anned Saha while the rest of the family was away. Dennis Zinerely of Freeport visited Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Zielonka of Ashby all last week and had a very nice time. He left for home Monday, June 10th. Mrs. Clara Junek of Blessing visited Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Junek for Sunday dinner on June 9th. The whole family enjoyed her visit. Charlie Junek enjoyed the company of Paul Piwonka of Blessing Monday June 10th. Pfc. Richard Hahn was home visiting this Sunday for a short visit from Ft. Polk, La. Four of his army buddies were with him and enjoyed their first Texas visit. Birthday wishes are extended this week to Bryan McDonald on June 15th, Allan Hoover on Father's Day or the 16th, Mrs. Joe Sprta and Irma Blackmon on the 17th, Happy Birthday! Congratulations go to Mr. and Mrs. Mike Ledwig who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Saturday June 8th and were surprised with a party at the El Maton National Hall Saturday night. Everyone had a real good time dancing to the music of a juke box and eating all the delicious food. She received many beautiful gifts, among them was a set of sterling silver flatware. Mr. and Mrs. Silvester Hahn of Blessing were visited by their nieces and nephew, Dianne, Dorothy, and Frank Hahn, on Sunday June 9th. The kids had a very nice time riding horses and generally goofing off. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Saha visited Mr. and Mrs. Joe Marik of Houston over the weekend of June 1st, and they had a very enjoyable time. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gavranovic of Galveston visited Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Saha Saturday and Sunday, June 8th ant 9th.

Susan Keith honored Donna Cox with a surprise slumber party at her home on Friday June 14th. Donna was really surprised when she came over to Susan's expecting to spend a night with her and finding out that everyone else was, too. Guests were Misses Jane Genzer, Marilyn Baker, Carmen Fabrygel, Gail Ackerman, Gloria Junek, Linda Damuth, Lana Reed, and Michelle Midgett. Also attending the birthday party in the early evening were Victor Tomasek, George Brown, George Lee Brown, George Rickaway, Freddie Damuth, John Paul Savage, Dale Warn, Carl King, Ronnie Knebel, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Damuth and Becky. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Helms returned from Houston on June 11th and are now staying at their summer home on the Tres Palacios River. Frank Hahn has been fishing all week and says that fishing is good although he's not running into many big ones. His record catch was 16 fish. Mary Helen Gaas visited Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Polasek of Louse last week and had a very wonderful time. She came home on June 13 and is now working on plans and preparations for the Blessing CYO Baseball Tournament to be held next Sunday, June 23 at the Blessing Elementary School. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hahn of Galena Park and their granddaughter, Jule Wiles of Pasadena, were down visiting Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hahn and family and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Junek and family over the weekend. Gay Lynn Hahn left for Galena Park with Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Hahn where she will stay for a week's vacation with her aunt and uncle and Julie. Mr. and Mrs. George Orsak and family of El Maton had company from Bay City over for Father's Day Dinner. They were Mr. and Mrs. George Manna and family and Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Orsak and family, James Manna, and Tom Bennie. Janie Orsak spent two days with her sister Mrs. George Manna in Bay City during the second week in June and had a very nice time. Birthday wishes go to Mrs. Joe Sprta who was 73 Monday June 17th and to Irma Blackmon who was 18 that day also. Happy Birthday!
