I. J. Boles

Funeral services for Mr. I. J. Boles, age 74, of Bay City, will be held Saturday, March 15, 1997, at 11 am, in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, with Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating.  Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday until 9 pm in the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel.

He was born in Glen Flora on Saturday, March 25, 1922, to Cleveland Boles and Maggie Mitchell Boles, and passed away Monday, March 10, 1997, at Bay Villa Nursing Home in Bay City.

He was a Baptist by faith and a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Elsie Lee Clark of Houston, and one niece, Mrs. Elsie Marie Kelley, also of Houston.  Also a host of other relatives and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Cleo Boles Flagg. Active pallbearers will include friends of the family.

Christine Burrell

BAY CITY—Christine Burrell, 92, of Bay City, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004. She was born July 27, 1912, in Pickens, Miss., to the Late Orange and Rosie Moore Evans.

Survivors: daughters, Doris Williams of Bay City, Jean Cockrell of Van Vleck, and Elizabeth Hudson of Anchorage, Alaska; sons, Allen Burrell and Alfred Burrell, both of Houston, Haywood Burrell of Seguin, Herman Burrell of Mississippi, and Melvin Burrel of Bay City; and many grandchildren.

Services will be 2 pm today at Nichols Street Church of Christ in Bay City, A. W. Ward officiating. Burial will be at Eastview Cemetery.

Eliza H. Butler

Funeral services for Eliza Butler, 80 of Bay City will be held 1 pm Wednesday at Church of the Living God, Bay City, with Elder W. T. Matthews officiating.  Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery, Bay City. Visitation will be today at Greens Mortuary and from noon to 1 pm Wednesday at the church.

Mrs. Butler was born Dec. 15, 1907, in Texas to Charlie and Julian Holmes and died 8 am January 1, 1988, in Bay City. She was a member of the Church of the Living God and Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include two nieces, Jessie Bell Robinson of Bay City and Jessie Mae Finley of Los Angeles, Calif.; two great nieces, Ora Mae Washington of Los Angles and Eretta Smith of Dallas; two great-nephews, L. J. Butler of Rosharon and Wilson Hart of Bay City; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Butler of Rosharon; a goddaughter, Margaret Ligon of Los Angles; and several other relatives.

Pallbearers include Robert Lee Clark, L. J. Butler, Wilson Hart Sr., Wells Clark, Alvin Emanuel and O. G. Cooper. Honorary pallbearers include members of Church of the Living God and Order of the Eastern Star.

Rutha Mae Carter

Funeral services for Mrs. Rutha Mae Carter, 55, of Bay City will be held at 1 pm Friday at Mother Zion Baptist Church, Bay City, with the Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating.  Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery, Bay City.

Mr. Carter was born Dec. 25, 1931 in Matagorda County to Samuel and Estella Rugeley Johnson (deceased).  She died Dec. 28, 1986 at Matagorda General Hospital.  Mrs. Carter was a Baptist.

Visitation will be until 9 pm Thursday at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel and from noon to 1 pm at Mother Zion Church.

Survivors include her father, Mr. Samuel Johnson of Bay City; three daughters, A. J. Houston, Shelia Carter and Earlean Carter; two sons, Johnathan Carter and Ellis Carter of Bay City; one sister, Mr. Naomi Williams of Houston; three brothers, Willie Johnson Sr. of Bay City, Earnest Johnson and Sam Johnson Jr., both of Bay City; and three grandchildren.

Jim Lindsey Clark

Funeral services for Jim Lindsey Clark, 77, of Houston will be held 1 pm Wednesday at Mother Zion Baptist Church, Bay City, with the Rev. Mr. Clark was born Dec. 16, 1910, in Bay City to Henry and Ella Wilson Clark and died Jan. 8, 1988, at Ben Taub Hospital, Houston.  A former resident of Bay City, he was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Lee Clark of Houston; a daughter, Elsie Marie Kelly of Houston; two brothers, Wells Clark of Bay City and Don R. Wilkerson Sr. of Houston; two grandsons, Michael Clark and Curtis Kelly of Houston; a granddaughter, Lindsey Kelly of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.

Hilliard Fields Sr.

Funeral services for Hillard Fields Sr., 63, of Bay City will be held at 1 pm Tuesday at Jesus Free Will Holy Temple Church, Bay City, with the Rev. L. V. Mr. Fields was born Dec. 5, 1923, in Cedar Lane to Tommie and Annie Williams Fields Jr. and died Jan 23, 1987, at Matagorda General Hospital.  He was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include his wife, Hattie B. Lee Givens

Funeral services for Lee Givens, 66, of Bay City will be held at 11 am Wednesday at Green’s Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Roy Brown officiating.  Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery.

Visitation will be this afternoon, and a wake will be held from 7 to 9 pm today at the mortuary.

Mr. Givens was born March 7, 1920, in Texas and died Jan. 24, 1987, at his residence.  He was a member of the Methodist church.

Survivors include his mother, Lizzie Wilson of Bay City; a son, Lee Wilson of Galveston; a cousin, Beatrice Dobbie of Bay City; a grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Johnnie Stein Glaspy

Funeral services for Mrs. Johnnie Stein Glaspy, 55, of Bay City will be held 1:30 pm Thursday at Enterprise Baptist Church with the Rev. A. H. Pointer officiating. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery, Bay City.

Mrs. Glaspy was born May 31, 1934, in Galveston to Ned and Frankie Paige Austin and died June 10, 1989, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.  She was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include stepfather, Elmo Caesar of Bay City; four daughters, Lana Fulwood of North Carolian, Joy Lynn Paterson of Cleburne, Felecia Austin and Frankie Glaspy of Bay City; two sons, Melvin Johnson Jr. and Dennis Glaspy of Bay City; s sister, Joy Williams of Galveston; two brothers, Frank George Washington of Galveston and Adrain Caesar of Bay City; a great-aunt Margaret Bouldin Thompson of Bay City; a niece, Sandra Washington of Bay City; two god-daughters, India Brown and LaKesha Sean; a daughter-in-law; two sons-in-law; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five nieces; six nephews; and several other relatives and friends.

Eddie Marie Jones

Funeral services for Eddie Marie Jones, 49, of Bay City were held Saturday, May 25, 2002, at 11 am, at Enterprise Baptist Church, Bay City with the Rev. J. Weldon Gilbert, pastor, and the Rev. T.L. Richardson, eulogist. Burial followed at Eastview Cemetery, Bay City.

She was born in Bay City, Texas, Monday November 2, 1953m to Alta Mae Jones and Richard Eaton, and passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Bay Villa Healthcare Center, Bay City, Texas.

Survivors include two daughters, Maranda Batiste of LaMarque and Shannon Diaz of Tampa, Florida, and one son, Rodney Jones of Bay City; her father, Richard Eaton of Bay City; six sisters, Alta Faye, Shirley Jean, Shelia, Betty and Vicki all of Bay City, and Sarah of Markham; and five brothers, A. C., Troy and Nathaniel, all of Bay City. Richard of Richmond and Carl of Wharton, nine grandchildren, four aunts, two uncles, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Ernestine Law

Funeral services for Ernestine Law, 75, of Bay City, will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2002, at 11 am at Mother Zion Baptist Church, Bay City, with the Rev. K. J. Griggs, eulogist. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation will be Tuesday until 9 pm at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.

She was born in Bay City, Texas, Sunday January 2, 1927 to Sam Law Jr. and Larna Jones Law, and passed away Thursday, January 3, 2001, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.

She attended the public schools of Bay City and graduated from the former A. G. Hilliard High School.  After graduation from high school, she attended Prairie View A & M University, Prairie View, Texas, where she received both the Bachelor of Science and Master Degree in Home Economics. She served as Home Economics teacher at Hilliard High School, and as Librarian of Prairie View A&M University for a total of thirty-nine years.

Therefore, she touched the lives of many young people and exhibited a selfless service to the needs and wishes of others.  Well known for her gentle demeanor, she became a role model and cherished friend.  She retired from the field of education in 1987.

During her youth, Ernestine united with the Mother Zion Baptist Church under the pastorage of the late Rev. C. H. Brown, Sr. During the summers, she worked with the youth of the church with the Vacation Bible School, patiently teaching and lending her talents to the arts and crafts.

Survivors include two sisters, Erma Lee Jackson of Bay City, and Mary Earle Boozer of Hempstead.  Also cousins which include Walter Jones, III of Los Angeles, California, and Benjamin Scott, Jr. and Tanzie of Bay City, a nephew, Louis B. Jackson of Pledger, special friend, Jimmie Brown of Bay City; other relatives, friends and faculty from Hilliard High School and Prairie View A&M University. 

Active pallbearers will be Benjamin Scott, Jr., Louis Pointer, Sr., Andrew Brown, Lloyd Lewis, Louis B. Jackson, Daryl Gordon, William Dale, and Hewitt Wiggins.

Charlotte Manning

Funeral services for Charlotte Manning, 43, of Bay City, will be at noon Saturday, October 16, 2004, at Mother Zion Baptist Church, Bay City, with the Rev. K. J. Griggs, Pastor, and Supt. Doyle Anderson, eulogist.  Buril will follow at Eastview Cemetery.  Visitation will be Friday from 3 until 9 pm in the funeral home chapel.

She was born in Bay City, Texas, December 31, 1960, and passed away October 8, 2004, in Houston, Texas.

Survivors include; two sons, Charles Beasley Jr. of Bay City and Nurahda Manning, a junior at Texas A & M University, College Stations, Texas; and one granddaughter, Kaeden; also her father, J. T. Manning of Bay City; one sister, Fern M. Lee and Sanuel of Waco; and one brother, James Manning Jr. of Bay City; also a host of aunts, uncles, two nieces, Ferlisa and Ferlandra, other relatives and extended family; and many friends.

Jimmie Viola Manning

Funeral services for Jimmie Viola Manning, 97, of Bay City, will be held Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at 1 pm at Bethel Baptist Church in Bay City, with Rev. L. C. Cunningham, Jr., eulogist.  Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City.

Visitation will be Monday until 9 pm I the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel.

She was born in Montgomery, Texas, Tuesday, March 8, 1904, to George Roberts and Hattie Byrd Roberts, and Passed away Thursday, March 2, 2002 at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City, Texas.

She known throughout the community for her kindness and gentle disposition. Her radiant smile and love for mankind will be missed by those lives she touched.

Survivors include: seven children, L. E. Manning, J.T. Manning, I.V. Manning, Maude Franklin, Freddie Manning, Bertha Campbell and Lillie Harris; also 41 grandchildren, 125 great grands, 60 great-great-grands, a sister-in-law Katie Williams, and brother-in-law, Willie Manning; also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a family of many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her husband George Manning, Jan. 1, 2000, a daughter, Elizabeth Boone, and a son, Raymond Manning.

Jerry Martin

Mr. Martin was born Feb. 7, 1960 in Bay City to Louis and Dorothy Johnson Martin and died Nov. 9, 1988, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Martin Sr. of Bay City; eight sisters, Dorothy Griggs, Lillie Hines, Meland Wiley, Emma Green, Joyce Durgan and Jennifer Martin, all of Bay City, and Elsie Downie and Nellie Odoms of Corpus Christi; a brother, Louis Martin Jr. of Bay City, Emma Patterson, Ora Lee Anderson, Elcenia Gipson and Lydia Gipson, all of Bay City, and Asalee Adams of Lubbock; and three uncles, Walter Martin and William Martin, both of Bay City, and Jobie Johnson of Corpus Christi; a great-aunt, Helen Edison of Bay City; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Frances L. Matthews

BAY CITY—Frances Louise Matthews, 75, of Bay City, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004.  She was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Bay City, to the late Lawrence and Evelyn Brown.  She was a Baptist.

Survivors: husband, Clarence Woods; daughter, Debra Chatman of Houston; stepdaughter, Donna Woods of Wharton; stepson, the Rev. James Matthews of Georgia; brothers, J. W. Brown of Bay City and Lemone Brown of Rodeo, Calif.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be 2-8pm today at Green’s Mortuary Chapel.  Services will be 11 am Monday at Enterprise Baptist Church, the Rev. M. E. Matthews officiating.  Burial will be at Eastview Cemetery.

Sallie Smith Mayfield

Funeral services for Sallie Smith Mayfield, 77, of Bay City were scheduled for 2 pm today at Mother Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating.  Burial was in Eastview Cemetery, Bay City.  A wake was held from 7 to 9 pm Wednesday afternoon and from 1 to 2 pm today at the church. Mrs. Mayfield was born Jan. 27, 1910, in Bay City to Woodard and Viola Brown Smith and died Dec. 4, 1987, at her residence.  She was a member of the Supreme Camp of the American Woodmen and the Baptist church.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Pleas and Beverly Mayfield of Bay City; a son, Leo Mayfield of San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Susanna Harris of San Franciso and Mary Louise Berry of Oakland, Calif.; a goddaughter, Viola Linsey Johnson of Bay City; two sisters, Delconia Smith and Lillian Smith of Bay City; two brothers, W. W. Smith Jr. of San Diego, Calif.; and Baker Smith Sr. of Bay City; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born in Jefferson, Texas on Monday, March 31, 1919 to James McKinney and Pearl Johns McKinney and passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City, Texas.

Tommie was an industrious man skilled in carpentry.  He also owned a business moving and leveling houses in Matagorda County. Afterward, he was employed for 20 years with Bonus Crop Fertilizer, Inc. until retirement in 1996. He unselfishly gave of his time and energy to Family, friends and the community.  His character of lending a helping hand to everyone will be sorely missed.

Survivors include his wife, Nona J. McKinney of Bay City; one son, Richard Devon McKinney of Charlotte, North Carolina; two daughters, Natalie Rachelle McKinney of Houston, and Daphne Cheri King (&Paul) of Inglewood, California one sister, Esther Mae McDaniel of Long Beach, California; and four grandchildren, Shanedra Thomas of Eagle Lake, Tiffany Flenoy of Huntsville, Jennifer King, of Inglewood, Calif., and Hannah McKinney of Houston; one great-grandson, Melvin Robinson of Eagle Lake, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Rayfield Partain, Sr., T.L. Castilow, Sr., Frank Parker, Jerry Williams, J.D. Harris and Lloyd Lewis.

Funeral services for Lorraine Morris, 74, of Bay City will be held 11 am Saturday at Enterprise Baptist Church, Bay City, with the Rev. A. H. Pointer officiating.  Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery, Bay City.  Friends may call until 9 pm today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home and from 10 to 11 am Saturday at the church.  A wake will be held 8 pm today.

Mrs. Morris was born Nov. 20, 1914, in Matagorda County, Texas to Clarence and Pinkie Morris Times and died March 20, 1989, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.  She was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include her stepmother, Margaret Times of Bay City; a sister, Jessie Lee Williams of Markham; a brother, Henry Washingon of Markham; a brother-in-law, the Rev. O. L. Williamson; a niece, Loretta Times of Houston; and two nephews, Travis Times of San Antonio and Clarence Times III of Galveston.

BAY CITY—Lillie Redd, 84, of Bay City, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004. She was born Dec. 25, 1920, in Allenhurst, to the late Tobe Jr. and Hattie Scott Wiley.

Celestine Robinson

Funeral services for Celestine Robinson, 56, of Galveston will be held 11 am Saturday at St. John Baptist Church, Galveston, with the Rev. Lemuel Stinson Sr. officiating.  Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery, Bay City.

Visitation will be at St. John Baptist Church after 5 pm today and from 1:30 to 2:30 pm Saturday at Mother Zion Baptist Church, Bay City.  A wake will be held from 7 to 8 pm today at the church.

Mrs. Robinson was born April 22, 1931, in Blessing and died Sept 9, 1987, at the University of Texas Medical Branch. A resident of Galveston for many years, she was a graduate of Galveston College School of Nursing and was employed at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Survivors include a daughter, Lola A. Dean of Galveston; seven sons, Steve Robinson and Darrell Robinson of California, James E. Robinson Jr., Michael Robinson Sr., Charles Robinson Sr., Kenrye Robinson and David O. Robinson, all of Galveston; four sisters, Ann Austin of Bay City, Elverine Hebert of Blessing, Vivian Smith of Oakland, Calif. and Helen Hill of Houston; four brothers, David Rivers and Hure Rivers, both of Palacios, Elijah Rivers of Houston and Charlie Rivers of Bay City; 16 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several other relatives.

Weldon Smith

Funeral services for Weldon Smith, 63, of Washington, D. C. will be Saturday, February 2, 2002 at 3 pm at the Mother Zion Baptist Church I Bay City with the Rev. K. J. Griggs, eulogist.  Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation will be Friday until 9 pm in the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel.

He was born in Bay City, Texas on Monday, February 14, 1938, to the late Girtleen Wilcox Smith and Willie Smith.  He passed away Thursday, January 24, 2002. 

He was a graduate of Phillis Wheatly High School in San Antonio and received an accounting degree from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He worked as an accountant for the USA Department of Agriculture in Washington, D. C. until he retired. He also served four years in the U. S. Marines and three years in the U. S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, mother and sister.

Survivors include: his father, Willie Smith; stepmother, Luberta Smith of New Haven, Connecticut; aunt, Opal Davis of Bay City; a special cousin, Debra Smithe Nevels of Austin; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

Vernice Speed

Tom Welton Wilkerson

Mr. Wilkerson was born June 6, 1930, in Bay City to Sam and Ella Wilson Wilkerson Sr. and died June 23, 1987, at Gulf Coast Medical Center, Wharton.

He was a retired as a master sergeant from the U. S. Marine Corps and was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda J. Wilkerson of Bay City; two daughters, Elsie Kelley and Angela of Houston; five sons, Wayne Wilkerson of Los Angeles, Calif. Kevin, Leonard and Barry of Bay City and Wade of Houston; four brothers, Wells Clark and Moses Wilkerson of Bay City, Jim Clark and Don Ray Wilkerson of Houston, 21 nieces and nephews and 18 great-nieces and nephews.

She was formerly employed as custodian at Holiday Inn and First National Bank, Alvin, Texas.  At the time of her demise, she was a member of Ebenezer Temple, Angleton, Texas.

Otto Woods Jr.

Funeral services for Otto Woods Jr., 27 of Freer, Texas will be held 2 pm Saturday at Enterprise Baptist Church with the Rev. A. H. Mr. Woods was born April 26, 1960, in Bay City to Otto and Doris Dykes Woods Sr. and died Jan 27, 1988, at St. Lukes’s Hospital, Houston.

He graduated from Bay City High School in 1978 where he lettered in track and football.  He attended South Plains College, Levelland, and Sam Houston State University.  He was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include his wife, Neidra Gayle Woods of Freer; mother, Doris Woods of Bay City; father, Otto Woods Sr. of Galveston; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Ellen Darryel and George Woodard of Bay City, Adon Denice and Robert Baltrip of LaMarque and La Dale and Tydaryell Copeland of Bay City; three sisters, La Wana Copeland and Jeanice Woods, both of Galveston, and Angu Neke Woods of Bay City; four brothers, Kurbert Deward Woods, Cedric Owen Woods and Manson Woods, all of Bay City, and Warren Lee Woods of Huntsville; two stepsisters, Sharron Maxey and Lesia Maxey, both of Galveston; mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Herman Lee Wyche

Survivors include his wife, Beulah Mae Wyche of Long Beach; mother Naomi Spiller Harkless of Bay City; a daughter and son-in-law, Naomi Denise and Jimmy Scott Jr. of El Campo; a son, Herman M.
