Dr. Thompson was born c 1825 in Kentucky and died in 1876 in Matagorda County, Texas. He married Catherine Elinor Wadsworth (1839 - 1865) on September 25, 1860 in Matagorda County. They had a son, Albert Thompson c 1863. Catherine died on March 18, 1865. He married second Annie E. Wilkinson, daughter of Ann Wilkinson, on October 9, 1866. Their children were Owen and Ellen.

These two baptism records appear in
the Christ Church records. If they are the children of Dr. and Ann
Thompson, they must have died by 1880 as they don't appear on the
census with Ann. Ellen, who was 3 mos in 1870 does not appear in
1880, either. James Frederick Thompson, possible son of Dr. James R. & Annie E. Thompson, was born November 17, 1873 "Caney" and was baptized July 17, 1874 "Caney."

Thompson practiced in Matagorda County during the plantation era. A
document has survived which records his services to William Gray
Warren and the people of his plantation. The portion contained here
lists the care for Mr. Warren's slaves. Dr. Thompson had to travel
about 25 miles from Matagorda by horseback or buggy to reach the
plantation. His mileage charge was $3.00.
