Just before going to press we learn Dr. and Mrs. E. B. Sanford, who were guests at the Chamber of Commerce meeting last night have decided to locate in Palacios. We are very glad to make this report as it has been apparent for some time that there was need of another doctor in our city. Dr. Sanford is a former resident of Port Arthur and was a Captain in the Army where he served three years. He is highly pleased with the location of Palacios and its possibilities and delighted with the prospects of the new hospital. The Beacon joins our citizens in extending him and his wife a most cordial welcome.

Funeral services for E. B. (Elmer Booth) Sanford, M.D. 91, of Palacios were held May 30, 1999 at the First United Methodist Church in Palacios with Rev. Clinton R. Harris and Rev. Charlie Parker officiating and Colleen Claybourn eulogist. Interment was at Palacios Cemetery. Dr. Sanford was born May 10, 1908 in Grant Parish near Wiliana, La. to the late Elmer Curtis and Eva Cordelia Richardson Sanford. He died May 28, 1999 at Wagner General Hospital. He was the second of six children and his family was part of the Liberty Chapel Methodist community. He attended various schools in Louisiana and graduated from high school in Morton, Miss. He was accepted as a medical student and graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1942. He married Ernette Courtney, a Medical Technologist in Port Arthur, on Oct. 17, 1941. After graduation from medical school and finishing an internship and residency in Des Moines, Iowa, Dr. Sanford joined the U. S. Army as a First Lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps. He served with the 21st Evacuation Hospital Unit in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands during World War II and left the service in 1946 with the rank of captain. He and his wife then settled in Palacios and established a medical practice which continued for 42 years until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Palacios Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge #990 AM & FM, Palacios VFW Post 2467; Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association, and Texas Academy of Family Practice. His community recognized him with Dr. Sanford Appreciation Day in 1971 and was named Man of the Year by the Palacios Chamber of Commerce in 1981. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ernette Courtney Sanford of Palacios; daughter and sister-in-law, Susan and Rufus Lewis of Rockport; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Booth and Hope Sanford of Buda TX., Charles Curtis and Cyndi Sanford of Missouri City; five grandsons, Nicholas, Samuel, Matthew, Daniel and John David Sanford; and one granddaughter, Candace Sanford. He was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. Pallbearers were Don Hyett, Ted Bates, Jr., Ney Oldham, III, Scott Trull, John Harrison and Woody Wilson. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Palacios or the Palacios Library.

Ernette C. Sanford, 89, of Palacios, passed away Thursday Sept. 15, 2005 at her residence. She was born Oct. 16, 1915, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, to the late Ernest Franklin and Olah Case Courtney. She grew up in Shreveport and graduated from Fair Park High School in 1932 at the age of 16. She then went to Louisiana Tech and graduated in 1936 with a degree in business. She taught school for several years, including one year in Guatemala. In 1941, she moved to Galveston, Texas, to get her medical technology training. While in school in Galveston she met a medical student, E. B. Sanford. They were married at the Methodist Temple in Port Arthur on Oct. 17, 1941. The coming of WWII changed their lives drastically. After graduation, E. B. joined the U. S. Army Medical Corps, and Ernette moved with him to Des Moines, Iowa, and then to Atlantic City, New Jersey. In 1946, they settled in Palacios and started a medical practice together on the second story of the old Feather Building on Main Street. She was a teacher, a laboratory technician, and a mother. Mrs. Sanford was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Palacios and a resident of Palacios for 59 years. She also was a former member of the Harmonie Club and Wednesday Bridge Club. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Rufus Lewis of Rockport, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Hope Sanford of Buda, Texas, and Charles and Cindy Sanford of Missouri City, Texas; grandchildren, Candace Robbins and husband Steve, Nicholas, Samuel, Matthew, Daniel and John David Sanford. The funeral service will be at 2 p. m Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Palacios, with the Reverends Ray Wells adn Clint Harris officiating. Interment will follow at Palacios Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ted Bates, Jr., Don Hyett, Samuel, Matthew, Nicholas and Daniel Sanford. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Price, Dr. Ed
Ferrell, John David Sanford and Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Palacios, Palacios Library, or the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center, Bay City, Texas. The family would especially like to thank care givers, Mary Ann Price and Hope Guerrero, for all the love, support and care that they gave to Mrs. Sanford.
