Dr. Foote graduated from the University of Texas
Medical Branch in Galveston and graduated in 1898.
Co-Founder of Wharton Spectator
The history of the Wharton Journal-Spectator dates back to A.
Foote and his brother, Dr. Stephen A. Foote, early relatives of
Wharton's Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Horton Foote. They began
publishing the Wharton Spectator on Nov. 2, 1889, beginning
one branch of the modern-day Journal-Spectator family tree.
The Shannon family — brothers F. W., Hal and Emmett — bought it in
1910.

Matagorda Pharmacy
On July 5, 1905, Dr. J. E. Simons bought the property. The other
partners joined the business on January 24, 1906. The old Rice
Saloon was demolished, and in its place, a two-story building was
constructed of concrete blocks, which were made in Bay City. The
contractors were J. W. White and O. E. Hatchet The other partners
sold their stock to Dr. P. E. Parker and Dr. J. E. Simons, who later
sold the drugstore to Grover and Layton Moore.

Dr. S. A. Foote, 60, died Wednesday, [after]noon
at his residence, 2610 Stanford. He is survived by his ...two
daughters, Miss Emma Foote and Mrs. John A. Huebner; [and son Dr.]
Stephen A. Foote, Jr., all of Houston; and two sisters, Mrs. [H. C.]
Neumann of California and ___ Foote of Houston. The body will be
take overland to Wharton by the Wall & Stabe company [leaving]
Houston at noon on ____. Funeral services will be held at the
Episcopal church in Wharton at 2 p. m. Reverend Butte officiating,
with burial following in the [city] cemetery under the direction of
the Wall & Stabe company.

Rites Held Wednesday For Mrs. Foote, 75, in Wharton Church
Funeral services for Mrs. Stephen A Foote, 75,
long-time resident of Bay City and Matagorda County, were held
yesterday (Wednesday) at the Wharton Episcopal Church, with the Rev.
Thomas W. Sumners of Houston officiating.
Mrs. Foote passed away Sunday night in Houston,
where she had lived for several years.
She first came to Matagorda County as a bride
many years ago. Her husband practiced medicine in Bay City and
Matagorda.
Among her survivors are two daughters, Mrs. John
A. Huebner of Bay City of Bay City and Mrs. H. C. Ferguson of Bay
City and Houston; one son, Dr. Stephen A. Foote, Jr., director of
Houston's St. Joseph Hospital; two brothers, Robert L. Huston and P.
G. Huston of Bay City.
Two of her surviving grandchildren reside in Bay
City. They are Jack Huebner and Mrs. Bob Coppock. Other survivors
include two great-grandchildren, also of Bay City.

John Andrew “Jack” Huebner, Jr. passed away on
March 16, 2007.
He was born July 28, 1926 in Houston to Molly Laflin Foote and John
A. Huebner, Sr. He attended Texas A & M and was a graduate of Rice
University. He served in the US Navy during WWII.
He is survived by: his wife of 57 years Myrtle Gregory Huebner.
Their entire married life was spent in Bay City, Texas. He was a
life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City, where
he sang in the choir. He was on the board of the IBC Bank and on the
board of directors of Port City Stock Yards. He was also very active
in other civic organizations throughout his life.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by: three daughters and
sons-in-law Jan and Rich Harmon, Kristi and Greg Meyer, and Molly
and Keith Dunn; grandchildren, Julia and Miranda Harmon, Clay,
Bryan, Keith and wife Jennie Meyer, Kaitlyn, Bethany, Anna and John
Dunn; and great grandchild, Luke Meyer.
He was preceded in death by: his sister Pauline Huebner Knight.
He is survived by her children Mike and Debbie Coppock, Jeff Coppock
and Susie Coppock Yanko. He will be greatly missed by many family
members and close friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church
of Bay City or to a charity of your choice.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at the
First Presbyterian Church in Bay City. The family will receive
friends and relatives from 6 until 8pm Monday at Taylor Bros.

Austin Society
Austin friends of Miss Lucy Dell Garrett of
Houston have received invitations to her marriage Saturday, June 27,
to Dr. Stephen Foote of Houston, which will be solemnized at the
home of Miss Garrett's parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Garrett
A number of Austinians will motor to Houston at
the weekend to attend the wedding. Miss Garrett formerly attended
the University of Texas, and has many friends here, having visited
here frequently since attending the university.
Miss Garrett and Dr. Foote will be honored by Mr.
and Mrs. John Schuhmacher Friday night following the rehearsal with
a supper. Mrs. Schumacher is the former Miss Paula Holland, also a
former university student.
