Dr. Felix Vinson Bryant (19 Jul 1871 - 25 Aug 1951), son of James Bryant and Mary C. Ham Bryant, was born in Sardis, Henderson County, Tennessee. He married Bessie Bird Moore (27 Nov 1881 - 03 Oct 1966), daughter of Edgar Maurice Bowie Moore and Julia Isabella Eanes c 1901. Bessie was the sister of Sadie Bell Moore Merck (Mrs. B. V.) of Collegeport. They lived in Custer County, Oklahoma in 1900 and 1910 and in Van Zandt County, Texas in 1920 and 1930. Their son, James Paul Bryant was born February 17, 1903 in Hammon, Custer County, Oklahoma and died June 19, 1985 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. When Dr. and Mrs. F. V. Bryant, Mrs. Merck's brother-in-law and sister, left the area because physicians did not have much of an income there, the Mercks purchased their twenty acres adjoining the Merck property which had a two story home and a large orange orchard.
F. V. BRYANT
, was born July 19, 1871, at Sardis, TN where he
attended public school and college. He came to Texas in early
manhood. He attended Grayson College, Whitewright and entered
medical school, attending the University of the South at Sewanee TN,
University of TN, Nashville; Hering Medical College in Chicago where
he received his M.D. Degree. He began the practice of medicine in OK
in 1900. In 1901 he was married to Bessie Moore. To this union two
children were born, James Paul and Clara Mildred, who died in
infancy. For 51 years Dr. Bryant engaged in the study and practice
of medicine, the last 38 years being in Van Zandt county. He served
as president of the Van Zandt County Medical Society and was also
president of Texas State Homeopathic Assoc. Dr. Bryant was converted
when a young man and was brought up in the Presbyterian faith. He
died August 25, 1951 at Canton TX. Funeral services were held in the
Methodist Church in Canton Sunday afternoon, August 26, conducted by
the pastor Rev. Hooper Haygood, assisted by Rev. T. T. Newton ,
pastor of the Canton Baptist Church. The song service was by the
choirs of both churches. At Holly Springs cemetery where Dr. Bryant
was laid to rest the song service was by a group of colored friends
and patrons, led by Porter Henderson who also paid tribute to the
doctor for his years of service to his friends of the colored race.
Active pallbearers were former schoolmates and pupils of his son,
Paul Bryant. They were Homer Bass, Willard Sides, Grady Parker,
Louis Harper, Peron Black and R. E. Everit. Honorary pallbearers
were Dr. J. M. Travis, Dr. John Travis, Dr. J. W. Bass, Dr. J. S.
Pugh, Dr. DeLeon Sanders, Dr. G. H. Hilliard, Jr., Dr. T. R. Keshey.
Dr. Bryant is survived by his wife, son, James Paul Bryant of New
York City, granddaughter Mrs. James S. Alley, Great grandson, James
S. Alley Jr. of Dallas one brother, Dr. B. F. Bryant of Atoka OK;
four nephews F. A. Bryant of Atoka OK; R. C. Hopper of Sardis TN;
Col. C. M. Farber, Washington D.C.; and Louis M. Farber, Annapolis
and one niece Nell A. Bryant of Dallas. |
