In referring to the honors that have been
conferred upon Matagorda County boys by the army department, The
Tribune yesterday overlooked four very important appointments. One
was that of Dr. T. C. Brooks, who is now captain of the Base Hospital at
Deming, N. M.; another is Mark Fowler, now a lieutenant in the
Quartermaster’s Department; Warner Stewart of Matagorda is first
lieutenant in the Coast Artillery and V. C. Porter, first lieutenant in

Houston Post Special Bay City, Texas, Aug. 11.—Cottrell Brooks, son of Dr. and Mrs. T. C. Brooks of Bay City, who is employed at the Garrett motor boat plant in Detroit, Mich., is reported missing. Young Brooks, in company with William Luckwell, left the plant in a power boat on Lake Michigan and all efforts have been made to find some trace of them, but were unsuccessful. Dr. Books received a wire Tuesday afternoon which stated that all hopes of finding the young men had been given up. Cottrell Brooks went to Detroit about a year ago and had been employed there since that time. Houston Post, August 12, 1921
Cottrell Brooks’ Funeral Today
The body of Cottrell Brooks, who was drowned in Lake St. Clair,
Michigan, yesterday a week ago, arrived in Bay City today over the Cottrell, son of Dr. and Mrs. T. C. Brooks of this city, was 23 years of age and was reared in Bay City. He attended the Bay City high school and was very popular with his school mates and all others who knew him. He attended A. and M. and when war broke out volunteered his services to his country. During the war he did service on the border. About a year ago he went to Michigan, making his headquarters at Detroit. Detroit papers recently received here spoke highly of him and regretted the tragedy very much. They kept the information of the accident and search for the body well before the public until the searchers were rewarded last Friday. The body was met at the train today by a large concourse of sorrowing friends of the family and former companions and schoolmates of the splendid young man. The pall bearers were, active: Jim Fitzmaurice, Percy Hamill, Pierce Hamilton, Fred Law, Austin Castleton, Bobbie Johnson. Honorary: Esker McDonald, Randolph Cox, Frank Garrett, John Hill, Weldon Smith, Doolie Franz. In the course of a newspaper’s career it frequently becomes necessary to record events of sadness and sorrow along with the other contemporaneous topics of the day. And it is such as this one when words fail to express the sorrow we feel or to convey to the bereaved ones an adequate measure of sympathy.
