DeSoto Deadrick
Wilson Creek Negro Killed In Car Wreck

DeSoto Deadrick, 24, of Wilson Creek of West Matagorda County, was killed instantly about 7 a. m. Tuesday when the new yellow Pontiac convertible left the highway between Blessing and Palacios and crashed off a culvert and into a tree.

Deadrick was alone at the time of the accident. He was a member of a 12-child family, 10 still living and lived with his mother Mrs. Willie Deadrick at Wilson Creek. Services, family said, will be Sunday.

The fatality was the first from traffic accident of the year in Matagorda County. The body was brought to Duncan Roberts Funeral Home in Bay City for arrangements.

The force of the accident tore the tree from its roots. No indication was available Tuesday noon as to the cause of the accident.

Daily Tribune, January 10, 1956

Tuesday Morning Car Crash Fatal To Negro Youth

De Soto Deadrick Jr., a 24-year old Korean War veteran, was killed instantly early Tuesday morning when the car he was driving left the road, struck a culvert and crashed into a tree approximately two miles north of town on Highway 35.

Investigating officer, Deputy Sheriff E. T. Miller, said that apparently Deadrick had fallen asleep at the wheel of his car and it left the road.

Miller reported that the young Negro was dead when police and the volunteer fire department's emergency vehicle arrived at the scene.

The accident happened at 7:10 a. m.

"Without a doubt," the deputy said, "he died instantly."

The car was demolished.

Deadrick served in the army from February 1953 to January 12, 1955. At that time he received an honorable discharge.

The youth, who lived in Ashby, is survived by his mother, Mrs. Willie Belle Deadrick, three brothers, I. J. Deadrick, of Blessing, James Deadrick, of Galveston, and J. W. Deadrick, of Eagle Lake, and four sisters, Mrs. Elsie Curry, of Palacios, Mrs. Rosie Lee Curry, of Galveston, Mrs. Martha Davis, of Van Vleck and Mrs. Carta Belle White, of Blessing.

He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, etc.

Funeral services will be held in Bay City.

DeSoto Deadrick, Sr.
Negro Man, 69, Dies Of Injuries Received In Accident Saturday

An aged negro man died Saturday morning from injuries received when the truck in which he was riding was struck from the rear by a late model Plymouth sedan.

Dead, is DeSoto Deadrick, 68, of El Maton. His death was the third traffic fatality in Matagorda County this year.

Also injured in the smash-up were Mrs. Wanda Sue Gibson of San Antonio, who suffered a sprained knee, and her mother, Mr. A. G. Kinsey of Corpus Christi, with minor cuts and bruises. Both were occupants of the Plymouth.

Deadrick was rushed to a hospital in Bay City. He was dead 45 minutes after arriving.

The accident occurred, according to Highway Patrolman W. A. Cowan, when I. J. Deadrick, driver of the truck and son of the fatally injured man, attempted a left turn from Highway 35 onto the Collegeport farm-to-market road.

The truck was not moving when the Plymouth driven by Mrs. Gibson crashed into it, the officer said.

The force of the impact threw the elderly Deadrick out of the truck cab, causing his fatal injury. The driver of the truck was not injured.

As yet, no charges have been filed as a result of the accident, Patrolman Cowan said.
