Minutes – Jany 10, 1918

The regular meeting of the Collegeport Woman’s Club was held on the afternoon of Jany 10, 1918 at the Library. 17 present

Meeting called to order by the President. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

Name of one new member, Mrs. Campbell, presented and on motion made by Mrs. Van Ness seconded by Mrs. Sholl, it was voted to receive her in the Club.

Mrs. Sholl gave a verbal resignation as Vice-President, also as Chairman of the Health Committee, and on motion made by Mrs. Van Ness, seconded by Mrs. Clapp, it was voted to accept it with regret.

Report of County Federation Meeting held at Blessing, given by Mrs. Corse.

The Pres. appointed a committee consisting of Mrs. Van Ness, Mrs. Clapp and Mrs. Liggett to confer with Mr. Kirkpatrick in regard to the two clocks to be ordered for the school. Morris and Secy instructed to write order for payment of same.

Current events, after which the program for the afternoon was carried out, under leadership of Mrs. Van Ness.

Minutes – Jany 24, 1918

The regular meeting of the Collegeport Woman’s Club was held at the Library on the afternoon of Jany 24, 18. 14 present

Meeting called to order by the President.

Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

Current events followed, as there was no special business to be taken up, after which the program for the afternoon was carried out under leadership of Mrs. Heisey.

Subject – “Red Cross” and the following program was presented while the women worked busily on bandages.

Portion of letter from Merrill Heisey was read by Mrs. Heisey telling contents of Christmas package rec’d by him from the Red Cross.

The next meeting will be a Valentine Party for the children on the afternoon of Feby 14th at the Library – the regular meeting being held at 3 o’c the same afternoon.

Minutes – Feby 14 , 18

The regular meeting of the Collegeport Woman’s Club was held on the afternoon of Feby 14 at 3 o’c followed by the annual Valentine Party given to the children by the Club.

16 members present at the meeting and 40 children were guests at the party.

Meeting called to order by the President. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

Bill for stove presented and it was moved by Mrs. Liggett, seconded by Mrs. Duckworth, that it be allowed. Carried.

Secy to draw order for the sum 4.45.

It was moved by Mrs. Clapp, seconded by Mrs. Nelson, that the District dues of 1.00 be paid. Carried.

Report of committee on clocks rec’d and the thanks of Miss Benedict and Mr. Kirkpatrick given to the club for the clocks.

The President appointed a nominating committee consisting of Mrs. Van Ness, Mrs. Clapp and Mrs. Campbell, to make the slate for the coming election of officers.

Current events.

Remarks by Mrs. Hurd on the Birthday of the Library, followed by the entertainment for the children.

Motion to adjourn to meet on Feby 28. Mrs. H. A. Clapp, Secy

Minutes – March 14, 1918

The regular meeting of the Collegeport Woman’s Club was held at the Library on the afternoon of March 14. 9 present

Meeting called to order by the President. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

Bill for refreshments for Valentine Party presented and on motion made by Mrs. Liggett, seconded by Mrs. Travis, it was moved to pay the same from Library Fund. Amount 1.72

It was moved by Mrs. Clapp, seconded by Mrs. Logan that Mrs. Duckworth be made delegate to the District Convention to be held at Port Arthur. Carried.

Election of officers past and until the next regular meeting two weeks from today, the Home School meeting to be held on morning of same day. Motion to adjourn. Mrs. H. A. Clapp Secy
 


Minutes – March 20, 1918

Regular meeting at the Reading Room. 9 members present.

In the absence of the Secretary, Mrs. Van Ness was appointed Secy Pro Tem.

Minutes of the preceding meeting read and accepted.

The Sec read a letter on the improvement of Parks and Playgrounds.

Mrs. Travis spoke of the present use of the free drinking cups in our school. Discussion followed by Mrs. Travis, Mrs. Morris, Mrs. Van Ness, Mrs. Corse and Mrs. Heemer.

On motion made by Mrs. Van Ness, seconded by Mrs. Heemer, it was voted that Mrs. Travis speak of this matter to the teachers.

Reading of Secy Annual Report. On motion of Mrs. Travis, second by Mrs. Liggett, it was accepted.

Annual report of Cr. Secy. On motion of Mrs. Heemer, seconded by Mrs. Logan, it was accepted.

Annual report of Treas. On motion of Mrs. Logan, seconded by Mrs. Travis, it was accepted.

Annual report of Librarian. On motion of Mrs. Liggett, seconded by Mrs. Van Ness it was accepted.

Reading of Constitution and By-Laws by Secy.

Question of dues discusses by Mrs. Corse, Mrs. Van Ness, Mrs. Travis and Mrs. Heemer.

On motion of Mrs. Logan, seconded by Mrs. Liggett, it was voted that all members present vote without respect to dues.

Annual election of officers.

On motion, of Mrs. Van Ness, seconded by Mrs. Corse, it was voted to vote by acclamation.

Report nominating committee as follows:
For President – Mrs. Corse
For Vice President – Mrs. Hurd
For Secretary – Mrs. Duckworth
For Treasurer – Mrs. Liggett
For Cor Secy – Mrs. Heisey

Mrs. Corse refused the nomination and Mrs. Duckworth was substituted.
On motion of Mrs. Van Ness, seconded by Mrs. Travis, Mrs. Duckworth was unanimously elected President.
On motion of Mrs. Van Ness, seconded by Mrs. Liggett, Mrs. B. D. Hurd was elected Vice President.
On motion of Mrs. Liggett, seconded by Mrs. Travis, Mrs. Sweet was elected secretary.
On motion of Mrs. Travis, seconded by Mrs. Logan, Mrs. Liggett was elected treasurer.
On motion of Mrs. Liggett, seconded by Mrs. Travis, Mrs. Heisey was elected Cor Secy.
On motion of Mrs. Liggett, seconded by Mrs. Logan, it was voted to postpone the Home-School meeting two weeks.

Secy’s Annual Report given at annual metering held on March 20, 1918.

This report covers the work accomplished by the Collegeport Woman’s Club from the date of the late annual meeting, which was held on February 20, 1917.

At that time the following officers were elected:
Mrs. J. W. Kirkpatrick – President
Mrs. H. N. Sholl – Vice-President
Mrs. H. A. Clapp – Secretary
Mrs. L. E. Liggett – Treasurer
Mrs. E. C. Van Ness – Cor-Secretary

With one exception, that of Vice-Pres, these officers were re-elected, having served during the period of one club year, and the work was planned and carried out by them until June 14, 1917, when a new President was elected to fill the place of Mrs. Kirkpatrick who moved from Collegeport.

Mrs. T. C. Morris was unanimously elected and the balance of the year has been under her guidance.

On Jany 10, 1918, the office of Vice President was left vacant because of the removal of Mrs. Sholl from the town and that office has remained unfilled.

The study course from the University of Texas was continued until the last meeting in June.

A miscellaneous program was planned for the new year and the following subjects have been presented:
“Southern Poets and Writers”
“Parent – Teachers”
“Red Cross”
“Thanksgiving”
“The Army and Navy”
“Home – School”
“Red Cross”

The club kindly gave the use of the Library room to the Collegeport Auxiliary of the American Red Cross and the members have worked loyally and faithfully in this great work.

During the year, 6 new members have been added and the club membership now is 18.

The County Federation meetings, with the exception of the last one at which our Club was not represented, have been well attended and great help has been derived from meeting with other clubs.

Our club finances are not in a flourishing condition, but all bills have been paid and the treasury is not quite empty.

The Librarian is to be congratulated on the good balance it has on hand and the new books it has received during the year.

It is to be hoped that our members will really, do better work, be more interested in securing members and attending the meetings during the coming year.

Minutes April 11, 1918

The regular meeting of the Collegeport Woman’s Club was held on the afternoon of April11 at the Library. 8 present – 6 members – 2 guests

Meeting called to order by the Pres. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

Communications read:
Greeting from Mrs. La Gue, new President of the County Federation of Woman’s Clubs. Also from chairman of Ed. Committee of 4th District.

A quorum not being present, a business session could not be held, so the Home-School program for the afternoon under the leadership of Mrs. Van Ness was carried out.

A talk was given by Mr. Kirkpatrick on “School Problems,” followed by one by Miss Benedict on the same subject.

Mrs. Duckworth, member of the school board, gave a report of the board during the year.

Minutes – May 9, 1918

The regular meeting of the Collegeport Woman’s Club, was held on the afternoon of May 9th at the Library.  11 present

Meeting called to order by the President. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

Communications read:
One from Mrs. J. T. Hannary, chairman of War Council asking for a pledge from the club to raise a fund for Army Canteen work.

It was moved by Mrs. Liggett, seconded by Mrs. Bonnett, that the club drop the matter because of lack of time and the Cor Secy to so notify the chairman. Carried.

Also a communication from the National One Cent Postage Association was made. It was voted to endorse this movement and the Cor Secy was instructed to sign the card (which was enclosed for the purpose) and return same to given address.

Report of Mrs. Travis on the subject of the public drinking cups of the school. The motion is to be taken up when school opens in the fall.

Report of Mrs. Morris on the running water on the school grounds. It also will be remedied before school  time.

The resignation of Mrs. Duckworth, newly elected president of the club, was read. On motion made by Mrs. Clapp, seconded by Mrs. Liggett, it was voted that it be accepted.

The name of Mrs. W. K. Roberts was then presented to the club to fill the vacancy, and on motion made by Mrs. Clapp, seconded by Mrs. Van Ness, it was voted that she be elected.

Mrs. Van Ness expressed very graciously a few thoughts on the coming departure of our faithful President of the past year. Mrs. Morris, who leaves for her new home in a few weeks. A rising vote of thanks was given as an expression of appreciation for Mrs. Morris’ work as President and in the Library work.

It was moved by Mrs. Roberts, seconded by Mrs. Travis, the sum of 25.00 be given to the American Red Cross 2nd War Fund, the amount to be taken from the Library Fund of the Woman’s Club. Carried.

It was moved by Mrs. Holsworth, seconded by Mrs. Heemer, that the quilt commenced some time ago, be finished immediately and sold at the Red Cross auction to be held on Collegeport Day, May 25th, proceeds to be given to the ARC 2nd War Fund. Carried. The President appointed Mrs. Heemer chairman to attend to this work.

The subject of a woman member on the school board was discusses, and on motion made by Mrs. Holsworth, seconded by Mrs. Roberts, it was voted to present the name of Mrs. Merck to the chairman of the school board for appointment on the board to fill the unexpired term of Mrs. Duckworth resigned.

There being no further business before the house, a miscellaneous program was then carried out as follows:
“Red Cross” – Mrs. Corse
“Food Conservation” – Mrs. Clapp
“A letter from Over There” – Mrs. Roberts
Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Heemer also read letters from soldier boys.

Minutes – May 24th 1918

The regular meeting of the Collegeport Woman’s Club was held at the home of Mrs. E. A. Holsworth on the evening of May 24th.  11 present

Meeting called to order by the President. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

Communications read:
Invitation from Bay City for the Federation meeting to be held in that city on June 18th.

Report on Club quilt from Mrs. Heemer, chairman, quilt ready for Red Cross sale on May 27th.

Resignation of Mrs. W. K. Roberts, newly elected President, recd and it was moved by Mrs. Holsworth, seconded by Mrs. Clapp, that it be accepted. Carried.

Registration of Mrs. Ernest Sweet, newly elected Secy rec’d and it was moved by Mrs. Holsworth, seconded by Mrs. Hurd, that it be accepted. Carried.

It was moved by Mrs. Clapp, seconded by Mrs. Van Ness, that Mrs. Hurd be elected to the County Federation meeting in Bay City. Carried. It was moved by Mrs. Holsworth, seconded by Mrs. Hurd, that Mrs. Van Ness be elected alternate for the meeting. Carried.

Mrs. Holsworth moved, and it was seconded by Mrs. Hurd, that Mrs. Clapp be elected President of the Club. Carried.

It was moved by Mrs. Van Ness, seconded by Mrs. Hurd, that Mrs. Travis be elected Secy. Carried.

Minutes  June 8, 1918

The annual meeting of the Collegeport Woman’s Club was held in the Library room June 8, 1918. Seven present.

Minutes of previous meeting read and approved.

The newly elected President took the chair and spoke briefly regarding the work of the Club for the coming year.

Mrs. Van Ness, Mrs. Pine and Mrs. Corse were appointed members of Advisory Board.

Owing to there being no business of importance, the club adjourned to meet in two weeks at the library room.  Mrs. M. A. Travis  Secretary
 


Minutes of meeting  - June 20, 1918

The regular meeting of the Woman’s Club met in the Library room on the afternoon of June 2d, 1918.  8 present: 5 members – 3 guests

Meeting called to order by Vice President. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

Communications read from the Texas Federation of Woman’s Club on the War College session to be held at Austin on June 20 to 28th asking that a delegate be sent from this club. Laid on the table.

Also a communication from the Dept. of Agriculture urging all women at this critical time to do with out servants. The Vice president made a strong appeal to the women to stand by the Club and Library.

Mrs. Van Ness also spoke on the subject and it was the wish of all present to keep the club together.

Matter of insurance papers discussed and it was moved by Mrs. Corse, seconded by Mrs. Van Ness that the Secretary write Mr. Hoffman asking him to return the papers which are in his possession. Carried.

Remarks by Mrs. Corse and Mrs. Pine. A gift from Mrs. Hurd to the Library, “The Army and Navy,” was much appreciated and the numbers are to be kept and bound when file is full.

The President then called a meeting of Advisory Board to meet the following week at her home.

The meeting of the Advisory Board of the Woman’s Club met at the home of the president June 27th, 1918.  9 members present.

After the reports of committees were read and accepted, plans for our club work was unanimous in supporting the motion made by Mrs. B. D. Hurd and seconded by Mrs. F. M. Pine that we continue our club work throughout the summer months, doing Red Cross work after the business session in each meeting.

Mrs. Hurd spoke of the work being done by the Junior Red Cross in many places and of her plans for that work among the boys and girls in this community.

The suggestion was made by Mrs. Van Ness that an article relative to club work and Red Cross work be read at each meeting of the club during the summer months.

Minutes July 18, 1918

Meeting of the Woman’s Club held in the library room July 18.  8 present

Meeting called to order by President.

Motion made by Mrs. Corse, seconded by Mrs. Pine, that a Bill of 1.67 be paid Mrs. Weborg for the lining of the quilt made by the Red Cross.

Motion made by Mrs. Hurd, seconded by Mrs. Pine, that Library Day be changed from Saturday to Friday afternoon during the summer. Mrs. Pine in charge to select her assistants.

Mrs. Hurd gave an interesting report of Junior Red Cross work the efficient work they are doing.

Minutes – Aug. 1st 1918

The Woman’s Club met at the Red Cross room Thursday afternoon 3 hours.   8 present

After the business session which was conducted by president, the afternoon was spent doing Red Cross work.

Aug. 15, 1918

The Woman’s Club met in the Library room Aug. 15.  10 present.

In the absence of Pres. and Vice Pres. Mrs. Hurd opened the meeting.

Mrs. Van Ness reported on Home School work and urged our cooperation in interesting every mother in the school meetings. Mrs. Hurd spoke of the interest and advantage to be gained from parents cooperating with teachers.

Mrs. Van Ness spoke of the Great Patriots Drive coming in November.

Motion made by Mrs. Van Ness that our president be made delegate to the convention in Dallas.

Moved by Mrs. Van Ness, Seconded by Mrs. Liggett, that Mrs. Travis be delegate.

Mrs. Hurd spoke of interview with County Superintendent who advised her that it was compulsory to devote at least 50 minutes each week to patriotic thot or work in schools and suggested our school board be informed concerning law of patriotic work in School.

Minutes of Club meeting – 29 August

Regular meeting met at Red Cross room.  10 present

The meeting called to order by president. Minutes read & approved.

Moved by Mrs. B. D. Hurd, seconded by Mrs. Pine, that Mrs. W. A. Travis be delegate to the County Federation meeting to be held at Matagorda Sept. 7, 1918.

Mrs. Pine reported the library in good condition and people interested in reading.

Mrs. Hurd spoke of the increased interest in Junior Red Cross work and of her intention of establishing a private kindergarten sing the Montessori Method.

After remarks by the president in appreciation of Mrs. Hurd’s work with the young people and children, the club adjourned to meet in two weeks at the R. C. room.  Laurena Travis  Sec.
 


Sept 23, 1918

Meeting of club advisory board met at the home of the President.  7 present.

Meeting called to order by President.

In absence of secretary, Mrs. Van Ness was appointed Secretary Protem

Letter read from Mrs. Alpha Bussell giving an outline of the work of the Educational committee in the Texas Federation of Woman’s Clubs. Discussion of the letter followed.

Mrs. Van Ness moved that the secretary be instructed to write a letter to the Principal of our school asking her to report to the Woman’s Club any violation of the Educational law. Seconded by Mrs. Hurd.

Mrs. Hurd moved the corresponding Secretary be instructed to write a letter to Governor Hobby asking him to consider the subject of a complete survey of the educational institutions in Texas at the next meeting of the State Legislature. Seconded by Mrs. Pine. Carried.

The Home school work of the club was discussed. Mrs. Corse moved that Mrs. Van Ness be appointed chairman of the Home School work. Seconded by Mrs. Hurd. Carried.

The President re-appointed Mrs. Pine chairman of the Library committee.

Mrs. Hurd moved that each member of advisory board be a membership committee. Seconded by Mrs. Liggett. Carried.

Mrs. Hurd moved that Mrs. Heisey be appointed chairman of Health Com. Seconded by Mrs. Pine. Carried.

Mrs. Liggett moved that a committee be appointed announcing the years work to every woman in our community. Seconded by Mrs. Pine. Carried.

President appointed as such committee, Mrs. Hurd, Mrs. Van Ness, Mrs. Braden.

Mrs. Van Ness moved that the first meeting of the month be a Home School meeting and that the second meeting of month be a Red Cross Meeting. Seconded by Mrs. Pine. Carried.

Oct. 1st 1918

Owing to inclement weather no meeting was held.
 


Nov. 13, 1918

The Woman’s Club met in the club room, six members present.

Meeting called to order by president. Minutes of previous meeting read & approved.

Owing to so many social activities in the community, it was thot best to post pone the Nov. 27 meeting and not meet until Dec. 11th.

Motion made by Mrs. Moore, seconded by Mrs. Holsworth, that we meet once a month in the home of some club member. Carried.

Opening the Library was thoroughly discussed by those present and resulted in the possibility of opening it more promptly.
