PIERCE
 


The cabin was built before 1909 by Jonathan Edwards Pierce before Collegeport was founded to provide a shelter his cowboys while working cattle on the range.

After Collegeport was platted its location became Block 133 lots 5 & 6, 1 block north of Central Street, and one block west of King Road. It was still standing in 2021.
 


SOEKLAND
 


Arthur Edward Soekland (brother of Burton D. Hurd’s wife Dena Soekland Hurd) purchased the property from the Burton D. Hurd Land Company. His purchase was listed on the sales for April 6 & May 18, 1910. He first paid taxes of $300 in 1911 and paid taxes through 1916.
 


SCHUBRING
 


The property was purchased by William Schubring who first paid taxes in 1917. Tax records reveal he owned the property until at least 1937.

Anna D. Schubring Crane, sister of William, and her daughter Dorothy Maxine Crane, moved to Collegeport January 4, 1925.

…my Uncle Bill, asked her to come to Collegeport to live in his house, as he had moved to Houston. The house was fully furnished, even to a piano. Of course there was no running water nor a bathroom. The out-door toilet was too far from the house. Esther only stayed with us a short while and then returned to Houston to live with her daddy.This is My Life by Dorothy Corporon

Dorothy Crane married Richard L. Corporon June 8, 1930.

Anna returned to Baraboo in late 1938 and stayed until after the death of her son, Alvie Crane, on September 16, 1939.

Due to illness, Anna moved out of the house during the winter of 1945-46 and lived with her daughter, Dorothy Crane Corporon.

Anna Crain died on July 12, 1946

Mrs. Anna D. Crane

Mrs. Anna D. Crane, a highly respected citizen of the Citrus Grove community, died Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Corporon.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Palacios Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Geo. F. Gillespie, with burial in the Palacios cemetery.

Besides the daughter, Mrs. Corporon, two sisters survive, Mrs. Louisa Roser and Mrs. Lydia Porter, of Baraboo, Wisconsin, and a brother, Walter Schubring, of Madison, Wisconsin.

BROWN
 


Frank S. Brown married Florence Clark, March 2, 1940 in Matagorda County (Book H, Page 589)

They lived in the house in the 1940s according to Gary Ledwig who was the son of  Florence Marlene Clark Brown after her marriage to Alois Ledwig.

PENLAND
 


A. A. Penland and wife, Vannie Penland purchased the property.

Arlie A. Brown and wife, Ruby Brown deeded the property to the Penlands September 16, 1954, Volume 266, pages 361-363

They sold it to Harry Tracy Barnes M. D. and wife Dorothy M. Barnes on May 3, 1966.
 


BARNES
 


Harry Tracy  Barnes M. D. was born in San Antonio on March 31, 1926 and practiced in Bay City for a few years during the 1960s. He and his family later moved to Texas City where he died May 11, 1996.

Dr. Barnes and his wife, Dorothy M. Barnes, purchased the property from the Penlands. The deed is recorded in Book 458, Page 595.
 


LONG
 


Emmitt J. Long and wife, Era Deloyce Long, purchased the property from Dr. Harry & Dorothy M. Barnes on  May 3, 1966. The deed is recorded in Book 458, Page 595.

They in turn sold the property to Jay B. Gates and wife, Cora Alice Gates.
 


GATES
 


The deed conveying the land to Jay B. Gates and wife, Cora Alice Gates, was dated November 11, 1967 and recorded in Book 458 Page 470.

Jay Blair Gates lived in Collegeport in the 1960s with his grandparents He inherited the house and used the house as a weekend home. The deed was dated March 28, 1989 and was recorded in Volume 218, Page 552.
