Collegeport History

November 15th, the members of Wednesday Club met in the Presbyterian Church of Collegeport.

Mary Jane Miller, vice president, conducted the business for the day.

Eighteen members answered roll call with varied topics. It was our pleasure to have with us Mrs. D. Hamner of Waller, house guest of Mrs. Louise Waechter.

Mrs. Fannie Mae Stallard, Mrs. Hazel Merck arid Mrs. Rosalie Ellis, hostesses for the day's program, presented Mrs. Dorothy Franzen Merck, Collegeport pioneer, who brought us an interesting history of Collegeport. Collegeport was founded in 1908 by the Burton D. Hurd Land Company and grew into a thriving town of 496 by 1912.

At the founding of the town land was granted for the building of a college of industrial domestic and agricultural arts and sciences. Waterways were opened and developed. Due to catastrophic disasters through the years some of the town has been destroyed but the families living in the community are still carrying on and keeping those first plans of organization living and active with distinctive pride.

Mrs. Merck had many pictures of Collegeport on display that added interest to the history.

Refreshments of cakes, dips, chips, coffee and punch were served by the hostesses.

Thanks to the ladies of Collegeport who joined with us and welcomed us to make our visit so very interesting.
