Visiting the L. C. Smiths during the Christmas holidays were Mr. and Mrs. Cash, Mr. and Mrs. Abby Flanery, Mr. and Mrs. L. L. DeCombes all of Warren, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. Smith also had their children home, they were the V. E. Smith family of Cleveland, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Morgan and family of Houston and L. C. Smith, Jr. and family of Highlands, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Verner Bowers celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary December 22 with an Open House. They received as a gift from the community a very lovely linen table cloth. Seventy guests registered. Those from out of town included; Mrs. Mollie Chiles, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Domorad, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bowers, Mr. and Mrs. G. B. McKissick, Mrs. Addie Foster, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jenkins, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Corporon all of Palacios; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Duffy of El Campo; Mrs. Jesse Allen Derrick of Waco, Mr. and Mrs. I. Z. Dykes, Mr. and Mrs. G. I. Bowers, Mrs. P. P. Terry all of Bay City; Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Chiles of Brazoria. The Pat Jenkins family spent the Christmas holidays in Madisonville with Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Genzer and family and son, Harold Jenkins. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bullington, Lyn and Jackie, were in Houston on Christmas day for a family reunion of Mrs. Bullington's relatives. Those present included her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brigmon of Campti, La.; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Brigmon and sons of Jonesboro, La.; Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Long of Las Cruses, New Mexico; Mr. and Mrs. Altus Melton of Houston; Mrs. Ethel Brigmon and sons of Freeport. All the family were present except one daughter, Mrs. Lynn Friday of Chestnut, La., who was unable to attend. There were 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren present. Robert Jenkins and Jimmie Ware are off to Madisonville for New Years with Harold Jenkins and Adolph Genzers. Pat Lowry and children, Sharon, Debbie and Patrick and Lyn and Jackie Bullington are visiting the Charles Faktors in Sour Lake for New Years. Holiday visitors in the Fred Roesler home were Mrs. Roesler's sons and families, Mr. and Mrs. Stanford Ward of Houston, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Ward of Cincinnati, Ohio, also Buck Beard of Beaumont. The Roeslers and her family drove to San Antonio to spend Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Marshall. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Wells spent Christmas with Mr. Wells' family in Illinois. Dr. and Mrs. Teddy Whitmire and family of Monohans are visiting old friends and relatives here. Mrs. Whitmore will be remembered as Miss Pat Thompson, daughter of Mrs. Daisy Thompson of Blessing. Happy New Year all. Hope 1962 was a good year for you and yours.

The Christmas holidays are finally over and its back to school and college for all the students. The First Presbyterian Church was the scene of the wedding of Miss Carolyn Johnson and Jessie Ellis. They were married in the sanctuary Saturday afternoon, December 29, at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Richard Stone of Palacios officiating. Members of the immediate family were present. After a short wedding trip to Houston, they will make their home in Beeville. Jessie is stationed at the Beeville Naval Base. Our best wishes to these two fine young people. Week end visitors of the Roy Nelsons were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Williams and Sherry. Mr. and Mrs. Grady Walker and family of Bay City. The old fashioned Box Supper held at Citrus Grove School House December 28 was attended by 18 couples and they took in $138.00. The money will be used for building materials and repairs of the school house. After the Box Supper, they all enjoyed a "42" game. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nelson were business visitors in Bay City this past week. Mrs. R. L. Corporon and Mrs. Gustave Franzen attended the District 1 Executive and Luncheon meeting at the home of Mrs. Elmer Fanson in Bay City, Saturday. The annual New Year's Day dinner was held at the Mopac with 86 persons registering. Out of town visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hutson, Miss Thelma Batchelder, Mrs. Helen Barr, of Palacios; Rev. and Mrs. Bill Hodge and family of Baytown, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Derrick of Waco. Those having art exhibits on display at the New Year's Day dinner were Mrs. Helen Barr, Mrs. Lillian Richman and Mrs. A. A. Penland. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Rein of League City were in Collegeport Thursday visiting old friends. Hardy Mizelle of Cleveland is visiting his sister and family, the Bob Ellis family.

James Edward Foster, second-year student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, Texas will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, January 13. Mr. Foster attended Odessa College and received a bachelor of arts degree from Austin College in Sherman. He was a member of Eta Sigma Phi, national Greek honorary society, and the varsity baseball team. He has also served in the United States Marine Corps. He has his church membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Odessa, Texas.

James Foster, a student minister from Austin, conducted morning services at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday. He was a guest in the home of Mr. and Mrs. U. S. McMillan. Mr. and Mrs. U. S. McMillan, Stanley and Virginia McMillan were received into the membership of the church by the Session and Nancy McMillan was received as a baptized child on Sunday, January 6. The McMillans transferred their membership from the First American Lutheran Church of El Campo. A shower for Mrs. Jesse Ellis, the former Miss Carolyn Johnson, of Louise, was held Friday, January 11 at the Mopac with 35 attending. Cake and punch were served. The honoree received many lovely and useful gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roeser were business visitors in Victoria last Friday. The Women of the Church meeting was held last Thursday at the home of Mrs. John Merck. Eighteen members attended and plans were made to attend Bible Study at the First Presbyterian Church at Bay City on January 16. Those attending the meeting of the Men of the Church in Bay City Wednesday night were W. L. Ellis, Dick Corporon, Jerry Wells and John Merck, Jr. Weekend visitors of the Fred Roeslers were Mr. and Mrs. Gene Roesler of Houston. The sub-freezing weather brought damage to gardens and fruit trees. Some reported burst water pipes. The huge bobcat that was in front of the post office last week was killed by Joe Frank Jenkins. It weighed about 18 pounds. Speaking of animals, did you ever see an albino gopher? The Pat Jenkins found one in Madisonville while visiting relatives there several weeks ago. It is light beige in color and has pink eyes. It is a very rare and beautiful animal. “Unk” Ellis and Chile Saunders of Houston were hunting and fishing at Oyster Lake this past week. They returned to Houston before the freeze with a nice catch of reds and their limit of geese. A couple from El Campo (I failed to get their names) caught 18 reds weighing 3 to 4 pounds from the bridge at Oyster Lake the past week. Joe Roznovsky of Alvin got his limit of geese on the last day of the season, also Willie Rapstain got his limit of geese. The community was saddened by the death of William Dixon of Palacios whose home was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning. Our deepest sympathy goes to this family. Mrs. Mitchell of Baytown is visiting her sister, Mrs. Florence Ellis. Ted and Pansy Ressler of El Campo were here for the week end fishing.

Mrs. John Merck, Sr. and Mrs. John M. Merck, Jr. were co-hostesses for the first meeting of the new year of the Presbyterian Women of the Church at the Merck Sr. home, on the bayfront at Collegeport, on January 10th. The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. R. L. Corporon. The subject for study was entitled “The King Demonstrates His Power” as recorded by Matthew. Special consideration was given to the three miraculous healings by Jesus; the healing of the leper, the healing of the centurion’s servant and the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law. It was brought out how these incidents from the life of Jesus were a fulfillment of Isaiah’s words “he took our infirmities and bore our diseases” and these miracles were considered in correlation with present day miracles. It was announced that the District Women of the Presbyterian Church will hold a luncheon meeting February 12 in Bay City at the First Presbyterian Church. A report was given on “A Church Christmas Postcard.” This was a project to raise money for a special fund. Instead of the exchange of Christmas cards between the members of the church, this money which ordinarily would have been spent on cards and postage was deposited by the members in a giant Christmas card, designed and beautifully executed by Mrs. Gustave Franzen, placed in the church foyer. At the conclusion of the business session, refreshments of sandwiches, cakes, coffee and candies were served buffet style from the dining room, which had been decorated in holiday style. Those present were Mesdames R. L. Corporon, Bruce Kay, Fred Law, Gene Mixon, Percy Corporon, U. S. McMillan, Charlie Chaplin, Gust Franzen Sr., C. J. Williams, Roy Nelson, George Hejtmanek, R. L. Wells, Gerald Wells, Gustave Franzen and Dean Merck. Children present were Lamar and Kenneth Kay, Cheryl Hejtmanek, John M. Merck, G. W. and Derril Franzen.

We had our second severe cold spell within a week. Traveling was made very hazardous by the freezing rain and ice on the highways. Church services at the Presbyterian Church were not held due to sub-freezing weather and the Reverend Massey could not travel from Austin. Services of the First Baptist Church were held at the home of Rev. Bob McKinney. Mr. and Mrs. Delton Tate of Pasadena were here this past week visiting friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins Jr. and son have been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins Sr. Pat Jr., who has been working on an off shore drilling rig at Galveston, is now employed at Rockport. They are making their home in Palacios. The First Presbyterian Church held a wild game supper January 19 at the Mopac. It was attended by approximately 50 people. The annual church report was given. The meat was furnished by Dick Corporon, Russell Corporon and John Merck Jr. Miss Margaret Holsworth spent the weekend in Wharton with friends. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells, Jr. visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells Sr., this week before going into the service January 23. Also visiting the Gerald Wells Sr. were their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Fitzpatrick of Victoria. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Merck visited their son, Dean Merck Jr. and family in League City. Charlie Chaplin is home for a few days. Spending the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis, were Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Ellis. Mrs. Janice Crippes of Oroville, California is visiting relatives. Mrs. Noreen Murry and Mark visited Mr. and Mrs. Raymond LeCompte and Mr. and Mrs. Leo Fife in Danbury Friday. They were accompanied by Mrs. Murry’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leige Harvey of Bay City. They were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fife while there. Duggar and Sharon Ware of Markham were visiting their parents, the Clyde Wares, last week. Mr. and Mrs. Rob Wells and Jimmy and Noreen Murry were guests for coffee Sunday evening at the Clyde Wares. Dinner guests in the home of the Jack Bullingtons were Miss Sharon Lowry, Debbie and Sandra Schneider. Sandra was celebrating her 15th birthday. Mrs. Minnie Koonce of Carthage, Texas is visiting her daughter and family, the Johnny Williams. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Williams, Mrs. Charlie Williams and Jenni Melvin of Bay City were shopping in Reynosa, Mexico, Friday.

Edward H. Smith, second-year student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, Texas, will be guest pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Collegeport on Sunday, January 27. Mr. Smith received a bachelor of arts degree in international relations from Southwestern at Memphis, Tenn. Before entering the Seminary he was employed as an engineer draftsman in Forrest City, Arkansas and a personnel supervisor in Memphis. He has also served four years with the U. S. Army in Korea, Okinawa, and the United States. He has his church membership in the Brooks Road Presbyterian Church in Memphis, Tenn.

Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Genzer and family of Madisonville spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, Sr. Also visiting the Jenkins were Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, Jr. and son Patton of Palacios. Our deepest sympathy to Mrs. John Merck and the Pat Lowry family. Mr. Lowry was killed in an automobile accident west of Palacios on Wednesday night. Gerald Wells Jr. was sent to Fort Polk, La. for his basic training. He went into the service on January 23. Russell Law was home for a few days between terms at the University of Texas. Butch Bowers spent the week end here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Verner Bowers. Miss Virginia Wells is busy getting ready for her forthcoming marriage in March. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler were in Houston this past week on business and visited Mrs. Roesler’s son, Stanford Ward and wife. Visiting the Jack Bullingtons Sunday were Mrs. Katie Garza, Kay and Ricky of Palacios and Mr. and Mrs. Jay Gates of Houston, who were spending the week end at their summer place. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Corporon will start their new home at Citrus Grove as soon as the weather permits. Bobby Fowler will enter the University of Houston on February 3. Best of luck, Bobby. Larry and Cullen Smith, Linda Corporon and Jerry Chaplin all celebrated birthdays in January. Mrs. Smith took them to Bay City to attend a show. They had hamburgers afterwards. Monty and Glen Ward of Needville are visiting their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler. We’d like to extend our blessings to L. C. Smith who underwent surgery Monday morning. He is at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ackerman were fishing at Matagorda this past week but didn’t have much luck. Rev. Massey filled the pulpit at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday. The Massey family were guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Merck Jr. Gerald Wells sends his thanks for the New Testament and Psalms the congregation of the Presbyterian Church presented him before leaving for the army. He is stationed at Fort Polk, La. Congratulations to Jesse Ellis who was elected “Sailor of the Month.” Dorothy, Lyn and Jackie Bullington were in Bay City Friday. Fishing has not been too good. A few small trout were reported to have been caught at Oyster Lake. Delton Tate was down from Pasadena this past week visiting relatives and friends. Jim Bob Murry was home for a few days from A. & M. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Franzen was her mother, Mrs. C. H. Wilson of Deutschburg. Guests at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday were Janice Shimek, Larry Schuelke and Mrs. C. H. Wilson. A study course was held on the Book of Matthew this past week at the First Baptist Church. There will be a business meeting February 6 at the church. Everyone was glad to see the pretty weather as it gave the farmers a chance to get in the fields. We hope it stays pretty for awhile. Butch Bowers and Russell Law have returned to the University of Texas to resume their studies after being home with their parents and friends a few days between terms. Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Franzen and boys and Mrs. C. H. Wilson were in Deutschburg Saturday night to attend the March of Dimes supper. Mr. and Mrs. Rob Wells were Bay City visitors last week. The Dean Mercks were off to Fort Worth on a business trip the first of the week. Week end visitors in the R. L. Corporon home were their children, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Corporon and family of Point Comfort and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Keszler and family of Olivia. The P. V. Corporons were visiting in Freeport over the week end. Coffee guests of the Carol Ackermans were Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Franzen and sons and Mrs. Mrs. C. H. Wilson. Dean Merck Jr. of League City visited his parents this past week end and started getting his rice farming equipment in shape to begin Spring plowing as soon as the weather permits. A group of friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Franzen for a “42” party. They were Mr. and Mrs. Rob Wells, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells and Lynda, Mr. and Mrs. P. V. Corporon and Larry, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Corporon and Mrs. C. H. Wilson.

George Alexander McCall, senior student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, Texas, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, February 10. Mr. McCall holds a bachelor of arts degree from Austin College in Sherman, where he was a member of Alpha Chi, national scholastic honorary fraternity. During the summer of 1960 he was student assistant pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Port Arthur. He has his church membership in the Grace-First Union Presbyterian Church in Weatherford.

Hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather. All the farmers are taking advantage of it and getting in their fields. (Last week that is!) The Women of the First Baptist Church met on February 5 with Mrs. W. B. Chandler to organize the W. M. U. (Woman's Missionary Union). Officers elected were as follows: Mrs. M. A. Ellis, president; Mrs. Don Ladwig, vice president; Mrs. Chester Corporon, secretary; Mrs. Dorothy Bullington, treasurer; Mrs. A. A. Penland, program chairman; Mrs. Victor Gallaher, prayer chairman and Mrs. Ira Corporon, social chairman. Visiting the Jack Bullingtons the past week were Mr. and Mrs. Lee Slaughter of Bay City. The visiting minister at the First Presbyterian Church, Mr. McCall, was dinner guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells Sunday. Mrs. Bruce Kay will lead the Bible Study from the book of Matthew at the First Presbyterian Church and Mrs. Gustave Franzen will give a program on the Mission Work is Southeast Asia at the Women of the Church meeting Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Fred Law is substituting for Mrs. L. C. Smith at the post office this week. Mr. and Mrs. Kimport are here to celebrate Roy Nelson's birthday. Mrs. Dean Merck received a letter from Mrs. Louise Waters. This letter addressed to Mrs. Dean Merck and her Collegeport friends is now in circulation. She said they are striving for unity in religion in Europe. You will want to read the interesting details about her school in Wales and her European trips. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bullington had dinner with Jack's sister, Mrs. Tootsie Kerbow in Bay City this past week. Charlie Chaplin is home for a few weeks before returning to his job on a tug boat. Visiting the Dean Mercks this past week was Jack Martin. Mrs. Ola Williams and Felix are visiting Mrs. C. J. Williams. We hope Sharon Lowry has a speedy recovery from the chicken pox. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Merck Jr. and boys are visiting their families Saturday. A community dinner will be held on February 17 at the Mopac. It will be sponsored by the Woman's Club of the First Presbyterian Church. All are welcome. Bring a covered dish. Bobby Fowler was home for the weekend from the University of Houston. G. W. and Derril Franzen spent Tuesday with their grandmother, Mrs. Gus Franzen, while their mother, Mrs. Gustave Franzen, attended a church meeting in Bay City. One of Collegeport's old timers, Charles Yeamans of Bay City visited friends here Sunday. He also attended services at the First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Gustave Franzen and children visited Mrs. C. H. Wilson in Deutschburg Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, Jr. and son, Paten Lee of Palacios were visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Fondon and Roland were fishing at Matagorda this past week. They returned home with a nice catch of rat reds. Mr. and Mrs. Rhinehart of Houston were down for the week end. Visiting the Carl Ackermans for a few days were Mrs. Ackerman’s sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Wooster of Baytown. We are glad to hear that L. C. Smith is getting along as well as could be expected after major surgery last Monday. The beginning of a two week revival began Sunday, February 17, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob McKinney conducting the services. We are sorry to hear that Robert Blackwell’s Ranchero was totally destroyed by fire late Tuesday evening. The cause of the fire is unknown. Jerry Ellis is home on leave from San Diego and will soon report to base at Beeville, Texas. Last week’s guests at the First Presbyterian Church were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Martin of Houston, Misses Barbara Jones and Janice Shimek and Charlie Yeamans of Bay City, who came to hear Mr. McCall, son of one of his classmate at law school in Austin. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Mixon visited their daughter and family in Corpus Christi. While there they attended the Parkway Presbyterian Church of Corpus Christi. Sixteen members and one guest, Mrs. Brent Kimport of Winner, South Dakota, attended the Women of the Church meeting. The District I meeting in Bay City Tuesday was attended by Mrs. P. V. and R. L. Corporon, Mrs. Gustave Franzen, Mrs. Dean and John Merck and Mrs. E. A. Mixon. The community’s George Washington dinner was held at the Mopac Sunday, February 17. There were many guests present despite the bad weather. Sharon Lowry spent the week end with her aunt, Mrs. Hazel Merck. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Derrick of Waco are down for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Huitt and son, Jay, of Palacios were visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Law, Sunday. Also visiting the Laws were their son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Law, Jr. of Bay City. The Masseys were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Mixon Saturday night. We’re sorry to hear that G. W. and Derril Franzen are ill with the flu. We hope they recover very soon. Mr. and Mrs. Duggar Ware of Markham were visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ware before moving to Laredo where Duggar will be employed on a ranch. Lawrence Hill is hospitalized with the flu. Hope him a speedy recovery, also Mrs. Hill who is ill at home.

The annual observance of Washington’s birthday, sponsored by the Woman’s Club, was held at the Mopac, Sunday, February 17 in Collegeport. This is a covered dish affair and for the past few years has been observed on the Sunday preceding February 22 in order that more people may attend. In spite of rain, 75 attended to enjoy the dinner and visit with old friends. Out of town guests were: Miss Sharon Lowry, Mrs. E. I. Chiles, Mrs. Blake Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Richman, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Huitt and son of Palacios; Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Derrick and daughters, Waco; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Keszler, Olivia; Mr. and Mrs. Dean F. William Collins Neely, senior student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, February 24. Mr. Neely has a bachelor of science degree from Southwest Texas State Teachers College. Before entering the Seminary he taught in the Taft School system. He served three years with the U. S. Army in the Far East. He is married to the former Pat Nelson of San Antonio. They have two children. Mr. Neely has his church membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Taft.

A former resident of Collegeport, Mrs. Teddy Whitmire of Monahans, was named one of the four recipients of a state wide 4-H alumni recognition award in 1962 for providing young people with living examples of dependable, purposeful citizenship. The winners, selected by the cooperative Extension Service, received plaques from the Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp. for their work. Mrs. Whitmire has been promoting 4-H work in Ward County for more than 10 years. She was secretary of the county Extension Service for nine years and served most of the time as secretary to the Ward County Livestock Show. She is co-chairman of the Ward County Quarter horse Show. Mrs. Whitmire, a housewife and quarter horse breeder, was county dress revue winner during eight years of 4-H work in Matagorda County. She is the daughter of Mrs. Daisy Thompson of Blessing and a niece of Jack Bullington. “It could not happen to a nicer person. Congratulations, cousin.” Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Marshal of San Antonio visited Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler during the week end. Lawrence Hill is home from the hospital after a siege of the flu, also down with the flu are Mr. and Mrs. Vic Gallaher. We hope they are up and about soon. Hardy Mizell has returned to his home in Cleveland after spending two months with his sister, Mrs. M. A. Ellis. A warm welcome to David Groves, formerly of Corpus Christi, who has come to make his home with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Mixon. The W. M. U. of the First Baptist Church held their meeting Tuesday, February 26 at the home of Mrs. Chester Corporon at 3 p. m. Mrs. Mamie Pennington was a dinner guest of the Kirkpatrick sisters in Palacios, Sunday. Gerald Wells, Jr. writes that he appreciates the many cards and letters and that he’ll try to answer them soon. Ted and Pansy Dressler of El Campo were down to Oyster Lake for the week end to do some fishing but had very little luck. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, Jr. visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, Sr. before moving to Galveston where Pat will be employed on an off-shore drilling rig. Re. E. “Bob” Smith of Houston has completed the sea wall around his summer place. Sure looks nice. Mr. and Mrs. John Doughty and children and Mr. and Mrs. Willis Hudson and children of Houston were down for the week end at their summer home. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins were coffee guests of the Jack Bullingtons Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Chaplin and boys spent the week end in Houston and attended the fat stock show. Mrs. M. S. Holsworth and Mason visited Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hodge and family in Baytown Sunday. Butch Bowers and Russell Law came home Saturday from the University of Texas for a short visit with their parents. Reports from Mrs. Smith at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. “L. C. is doing as well as could be expected after surgery." She asks that all remember him in your prayers. The Revival at the First Baptist Church has started its second week. We hope everyone will attend.

The meeting of the Presbyterian Women of the Church of Collegeport was held Thursday, February 14, in the lovely home of the vice president of the Circle, Mrs. Dean Merck. The moderator for the February meeting, Mrs. Fred Law, led in the group discussion “The King Delegates Authority” as outlined in the workbook, for the monthly study of the Gospel of Matthew. The keen interest in the study was evidenced by the spontaneity and participation of the entire group in the discussion. This study, according to the Gospel of Matthews, was a development of the chief theme running through each of the previous studies of “The Kingdom of Heaven.” Mrs. Gustave Franzen gave an interesting and thought-provoking talk on “World Missions” as out-lined in the Presbyterian Survey. An informal report was made by the six members who attended the District Women of Churches luncheon meeting given in Bay City, Feb. 12. An announcement was made of the approaching visit to Bay City on Feb. 26 of the missionary, Dr. Cummings, who will talk on Korea. It was decided that the members of this Circle will observe the week of prayer and self denial for world missions from Feb. 24 through March 3, and to this end, envelopes were distributed in which to place amounts of whatever money has been saved by individual acts of self denial. This money to be used for world missions. Following the business meeting, lovely refreshments were served buffet style in the dining room. Delightful to the eye, as well as the taste, were the red and white valentine hearts of cherry salad, jellied and decorated with flutings of whipped cream and served on sparkling crystal with luscious slices of red velvet cake. Carrying out the red and white valentine motif, an exquisite arrangement of white roses was on the buffet and in the living room, the hostess had placed a tree, blossoming with crimson roses. Assisting the hostess were Mrs. Gustave Franzen and Mrs. Gerald Wells. Those present were Miss Margaret Holsworth, Mesdames Fred Law, Roy Nelson, Gustave Franzen, Gene Mixon, P. V. Corporon, U. S. McMillan, George Hejtmanek, R. L. Corporon, R. L. Wells, Charlie Williams, also a visitor, Mrs. G. B. Kimport of Winner, S. D. Children present were Cheryl Hejtmanek, G. W. and Derril Franzen.

Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Ellis spent the week end in Houston visiting their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dowell. Mrs. Dowell is ill with the flu. It seems that there is still a lot of flu going around. Those ill in our community this past week were Mrs. Margaret Corporon and children, Mrs. Fred Roesler, Rudy Fink, Lawrence Hill, and Mrs. Vic Gallaher. We extend our deepest sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Benito Oliveraz, whose 4 months old daughter, Pamela, died early Saturday morning. L. C. Smith returned home Thursday from St. Luke's Hospital in Houston. Hope to see him up and around again soon. Mrs. Zelphia Hill of Angleton is getting ready to move into her home in Collegeport. She hopes to be moved in by the first of April. Bobby Fowler was home for the weekend from the University of Houston. Mrs. Pat Cheety and children, Ricky, Vicky and Mike of Houston were down visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blackwell. The children remained to spend a few days with their grandparents. Mrs. W. M. S. of the First Baptist Church held their meeting Tuesday, March 5, at 3 p. m. Mary Jo Blackwell and Lynette Jenkins spent Saturday at Camp Aranama at Goliad to help get it ready for summer. Guests last week at the First Presbyterian Church were Mrs. C. H. Wilson, Raymond Threadgill, Paula and Nicki, Mrs. Clyde Ware and the Roy Corporon family of Point Comfort. Gilbert Ellis, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis, left for the army Thursday. Rev. Leonard Swinney and Frank Diebel of Port Lavaca explained the Presbyterian Development Fund Monday night. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Mowery who celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in February. Mrs. P. V. Corporon, Mrs. R. L. Corporon, Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Franzen, Mrs. Dean Merck and Mrs. Roy Nelson report a good fellowship at the Mission's Program at the Palacios Presbyterian Church Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Verner Bowers were in Houston this past weekend attending the Fat Stock Show and Rodeo. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Derrick of Waco were here this past week visiting her mother, Mrs. Ethel Holsworth. Lyn and Jackie Bullington were in Edna Friday for a visit to the dentist. Dan and Elsie Williams of Pasadena were down at their summer home for the weekend and did some fishing, but had little luck. Fishing still hasn't been too good around the area. There were a few taken at Oyster Lake. Francis Rapstain reported to have taken some nice rat reds this past week. Jack Bullington, Lyn and Jackie spent Saturday at Bullington's camp on the Bernard River to help Jack's sister, Mrs. A. A. Brown, who is building a summer cottage there. Lyn and Jackie were "painters' helpers." Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Franzen, G. W. and Derril had lunch with Mrs. Franzen's mother, Mrs. C. H. Wilson of Deutschburg. The Rev. Massey and family were here Sunday. They were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. U. S. McMillan. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ackerman were in Victoria and Shiner on business this past week. Mr. Ackerman celebrated his (?) birthday Friday, March 1. They were guests of the Gerald Wells to celebrate his birthday and have cake and ice cream.

Jacob C. Turner, student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 10. Mr. Turner has a bachelor of arts degree from Arkansas College in Batesville, Arkansas, and has attended Southwestern at Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. He was president of Alpha Chi, national honorary scholastic fraternity; a member of the choir, and vice-president of the Student Christian Federation. He was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He is married to the former Barbara Ann Buford of Forrest City, Arkansas. Mr. Turner has his church membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Warren, Arkansas.

Dr. Henry W. Quinius, Jr., professor of Church Administration and director of Field Education at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 17. Dr. Quinius received a bachelor of business administration degree from The University of Texas and bachelor of divinity and master of theology degrees from Austin Seminary. During the fall of 1961he studied at Union Theological Seminary in New York as a Visiting Scholar. Dr. Quinius has served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Texas City and of the Beacon Hill Church in San Antonio. He is on the Board of Trustees for Schreiner Institute of Kerrville, which he attended prior to the University of Texas, and on the Latin American Work Advisory Committee of the Synod of Texas. He is married to the former Emma Lou Wright of Farmersville. They have three children.

Congratulations are due Kenneth Chaplin who won a blue ribbon on his lamb “Miss Wood” and also to Larry Corporon who received a white ribbon on his Brangus calf. We would like to wish a happy birthday to Mrs. Roy Nelson who celebrated her 81st birthday, Sunday. The Women of the Church meeting was held Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Gustave Franzen. There were 19 present. Mrs. Gerald Wells and Mrs. Franzen were hostesses. Bobby Fowler was home for the week end from the University of Houston. Visiting the Robert Blackwells this past week were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stone of Houston and Mrs. Pat Oakley and Deloris of Pasadena. Stanley McMillan, who is attending A. & I College at Kingsville and his fiancée, Miss Marilyn Johnson of Louise, were visiting Stanley’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. U. S. McMillan this past week end. Mr. and Mrs. P. V. Corporon and Larry were in Llano this week end to look over a deer lease. On their return trip they visited Mr. and Mrs. Ira Corporon in Marble Falls, who have recently purchased a summer home there. Mrs. Jeanette Angelo of Houston visited Mrs. Charlie Williams and Babe Williams. Larry Schuelke of Palacios spent a few days with Russell Corporon. Visiting the Dick Corporons were their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Corporon. There was a covered dish dinner at the Mopac Sunday, with 55 guests present. Mesdames John Merck, Gerald Wells and Rob Wells were responsible for making the preparations for dinner. Mrs. Ola Williams and Felix of Houston were guests of Mrs. Charlie Williams and Babe Williams. Fishing seems to be getting a little better. Some nice trout and rat reds were taken at Oyster Lake and Tres Palacios River over the week end. Some of the bait camps have live bait. Still have some flu in the community. Those on the sick list here are Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, Jack Bullingotn, Mrs. Lawrence Hill and Liz Roesler. L. C. Spring has finally arrived and with it came strong March winds. The farmers are taking advantage of the weather and getting their crops planted. Visiting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith this week end were Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith Jr. and family of Cleveland. Mrs. Earl Hill of Angleton, accompanied by Mrs. L. O. Hill of Fulton, was down last week to check on the construction of her home and finish some last minute details before moving into her new home. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Stanley and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dowell of Houston visited Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Ellis. Dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Murry Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Ted Crone and Pam of Houston. While here the Crones also visited Mrs. Charlie Williams. Miss Virginia Wells and Carl Wayne Rhymes will be united in Holy Matrimony this Friday night at the First Presbyterian Church. The reception will be held in the Manse. Best wishes to this fine couple. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Mowery, Miss Marilyn Johnson, Mrs. Jesse Ellis, Miss Janice Shimek and Larry Schuelke were guests at the First Presbyterian Church last Sunday. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Stanley Skalla and family. Mr. Skalla passed away last Monday after a long illness. Butch Bowers was home for the week end from the University of Texas to visit his parents. Mr. Massey filled the pulpit Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church. He was a dinner guest of the John Mercks. A speedy recovery to Mrs. Gustave Franzen who fell and broke her arm last Saturday morning. Brother Bob McKinney is holding a revival at the First Baptist Church at Ganado, The revival will last until next Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Franzen have been visiting Mrs. Franzen’s mother, Mrs. C. H. Wilson of Deutschburg, who is in Wagner General Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Corporon and family spent Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Corporon, who live near Marble Falls. Weekend visitors of the Fred Roeslers were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Roesler of Houston, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Brown and Debbie Ward of Port Arthur. While here they attended the funeral of Mrs. Martha Brown in Palacios. A rehearsal dinner was given at the Manse Sunday after rehearsal for the wedding of Miss Virginia Wells and Carl Rhymes. On March 11th, Mrs. Gustave Franzen, Jr. was hostess to the Presbyterian Women of the Church of Collegeport. Mrs. Franzen received her guests in her manor home of brick set atop a hill and reached by a driveway through acres of lush green grass. Mrs. Franzen, who was also moderator for the day, led a helpful and enthusiastic discussion of the four parables as recorded by Matthew and outlined in the current work book. In an effort to obtain 100% participation in the discussion, the moderator divided the circle into groups of four each, which studied the different parables and then each group shared the conclusions and results of the discussion with the whole group. The monthly emphasis on Evangelism was presented by Mrs. Bruce Kay who enthralled her audience by a stimulating and fresh approach to her subject. A survey of the week of prayer and self denial, observed by the circle, was made. Envelopes to be used for money saved through acts of self denial, and which had been distributed in February, were collected. Mrs. Gerald Wells, chairman of the White Cross, outlined what is expected from the Collegeport circle. The articles to be collected and sent to Japan and Africa include bandages, material, baby blankets, etc. Following the business meeting, the guests were served coffee, sandwiches, and sweets. The many windows of the dining and living rooms were open to the warm spring afternoon so that one had the feeling of dining almost al fresco. Assisting the hostess in receiving her guests were Mrs. C. H. Wilson and Mrs. Gus Franzen, Sr. Among those present were Mesdames: John Merck, Sr., R. L. Corporon, P. V. Corporon, Gus Franzen, Sr., Rob Wells, C. J. Williams, Clyde Ware, Roy Nelson, C. H. Wilson, Fred Law, U. S. McMillan, Gene Mixon, Dean Merck, A. A. Penland, Bruce Kay, Gerald Wells, and John Merck, Jr. Master G. W. and Derril Franzen played happy hosts during the afternoon to their little guests Kenneth and Lamar Kay and John Milam Merck.

Howard Ronald Turnbow, second-year student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 31. Mr. Turnbow attended Phoenix College and Arizona State University. Before entering the Seminary he worked as a highway patrolman in Arizona for five years. He has also served three years in the U. S. Marine Corps. He is married to the former Wanda Jo Scott of Avondale, Arizona. They have four children. Mr. Turnbow has his church membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Chandler, Arizona.

Visiting the Carl Ackermans over the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Wooster of Baytown and their grandson, Randy Ward, of San Antonio. While here Mrs. Wooster and Mrs. Ackerman visited Mrs. Alvena Laslie in Blessing. Mrs. J. D. Lewis, Cathy, Randy, Ronnie and a friend, Gale Horn, of Houston were visiting Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Ellis. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith, Lerri and Patty were in Houston Saturday to take Mr. Smith for a check up. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Morris of Selma, Alabama, are visiting relatives and friends here. Mrs. C. H. Wilson of Deutschburg has returned home after spending a few days with her daughter, Mrs. Gustave Franzen. Miss Virginia Wells and Carl Rhymes were married in the First Presbyterian Church Friday night. After a honeymoon trip to Louisiana, the couple will make their home in Bay City. O. H. Gableman, 93, an old timer of Collegeport, died Thursday. He came to Collegeport in 1909 and lived here until recently when he went to live with a niece in League City. Burial services were held in League City. Rev. Ray Campbell of El Campo filled the pulpit in the First Baptist Church, Sunday. He and Mrs. Campbell were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Murry. Bill Johnson of Chicago is improving and is home from the hospital after suffering a stroke. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson are old friends of Mrs. Hattie Kundinger and have been coming to Collegeport and spending their vacation for many years. Mr. Johnson hopes to be able to get down this summer to do some fishing. Those who fished at Oyster Lake over the week end were Dan and Elsie Williams of Pasadena, Ted and Pansy Dressler of El Campo, Francis Rapstain, Dorothy Bullington, and several others whose names I failed to get. None had any luck unless you count "Hard Heads," stingrays and eels. Pvt. and Mrs. Gerald Wells were visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells before he leaves for Fort Will, Okla. where he will be stationed. Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Marshall of San Antonio were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler. Mrs. LaVerne Flewellen and children visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernor Bowers and attended the wedding of Miss Virginia Wells. Lynette Jenkins was in Houston to attend a District meeting of the F. H. A. I'll be back next week with all the latest news from Collegeport.

James H. Carter, senior student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church next Sunday. Mr. Carter received a bachelor of arts degree from Southwestern at Memphis, Tennessee. Before entering the Seminary he was employed by a chemical firm in Houston. He is married to the former Margaret Jones of Lake Charles, Louisiana. They have three children. Mr. Carter has his church membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nelson who celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson were married in Alton, Kan., on April 3, 1904. This was on an Easter Sunday. We would like to wish this couple many more happy years. We are sorry to hear that Mrs. L. A. Rein of League City is very ill and has returned to the hospital. We hope she has a speedy recovery. Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis and Tommy spent the weekend in Fort Polk, La., visiting their son, Gilbert. They were accompanied by Gilbert’s wife, Andre. While in Edna Tuesday for a trip to the dentist this reporter had a personal interview with Miss Candy Barr. I found her to be a very charming and attractive person. Miss Barr said, “I hope to settle down to a quiet life with my husband and daughter, Toylene, and later become engaged in some kind of social work.” Miss Barr was recently parolled from Goree Prison Farm. Mr. and Mrs. Vic Gallaher were in Bay City for a check Saturday. Both reports were found satisfactory. Jim Carter conducted services at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday. Carter was dinner guest of the R. L. Corporons. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ackerman were in Alvin Saturday picking strawberries. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Evans. Mrs. Zelphia Hill of Angleton and Mrs. Damon Gerlackh of Houston were down for the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rhymes were visiting Mrs. Rhymes’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wells. Gustave Franzen, elected a trustee for the Palacios Independent School District, was visiting friends and relatives Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Ellis were home for the weekend visiting Jesse’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis. Mrs. Luther Hill was here for the weekend visiting friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. John Ackerman of Blessing were visiting the Carl Ackermans and other friends here in Collegeport. Mrs. Margaret Holsworth was in Galveston Saturday. The B. B. Burns of Houston were at their summer home for the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Baker Wright of Cypress were also down at their summer place. Pvt. and Mrs. Gerald Wells Jr. are visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells Sr. Gerald will return to Fort Sill Okla., on April 12. Mr. and Mrs. Delton Tate, formerly of Collegeport, have built a new home in Fulton and are to move soon. Mrs. Margaret Holsworth was dinner guest of the R. L. Corporons Sunday. Construction on the R. L. Corporons new home began last week. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ware spent the weekend in Cuero with their daughter and her family, Mr. and Mrs. James Slone and son. I hope everyone had a nice Easter. The weatherman cooperated and we had a perfect day for Easter egg hunts, cook outs, boating and picnics. Some spent Easter at home with their families, others traveled out of town to be with friends and relatives. Mrs. L. C. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Gallaher, Mrs. Lila Morris, Mrs. Margaret Tate, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis were in San Marcos during the Easter holidays to attend the 50th wedding anniversary of Mrs. Smith’s sister, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Ellis, who were honored with a reception Sunday afternoon from 2:30 until 5 at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Buck Paine. Mrs. E. E. Christopher of Conroe and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Reno enjoyed a short visit with Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith during the holidays before going to Schicke Point where the Renos own a summer cottage. Mr. and Mrs. Delton Tate of Fulton were visiting friends and relatives here this week end. Mr. Massey conducted Easter services at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday. The Massey family were guests of the Fred Laws. The Woman’s Club will hold a very important meeting at the Mopac Wednesday afternoon to make plans for Collegeport Day which will be celebrated Saturday, May 25. Our sincere thanks to Verner Bowers for the many years he has represented our district as a trustee for the Palacios Independent School District. There were many who took advantage of the nice weather and holidays to fish, but in general there weren’t many fish caught due to strong winds and rough water. Those trying their luck were Mr. and Mrs. Rinehart of Houston who returned home with a very small catch; Dr. Matthews of Bay City tried his luck at Half Moon only to return with a few trout and gafftop. Agnes and “Blackie” Griff of Houston, no luck; Joe Roznovsky of Alta Loma, who visited Francis and Willie Rapstain, had a nice catch of blue catfish from the Brazos River; Mrs. Bessie O’Connor [O’Connell?] of Van Vleck caught only a few small drum; John Bohuslav of Markham caught several blue cats in a canal on Oyster Lake Road, they weighed from 5 to 8 pounds. Ted and Pansy Dressler of El Campo fished on Saturday. Mrs. Kopecky of El Maton, who celebrated her 93rd birthday Easter Sunday, was honored at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Blondie Domorod, with all eight of her children attending. We would like to extend our sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Manfred Jalufka who lost their place of business, the Travelers Inn, when it was completely destroyed by fire early Friday morning. Mrs. Dorothy Bullington, Lyn and Jackie, visited Mrs. Tootsie Kerbow and Teen Bullilngton in Bay City, Friday. Johnny Reynolds of Corpus Christi was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler Easter Sunday. They attended services at the First Baptist Church in Palacios. William Kimbro Hedrick, second-year student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, April 21. Mr. Hedrick received a bachelor of arts degree from Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, in 1961. He was a member of the band, the male chorus, Pi Kappa Phi social fraternity, and Phi Mu Alpha, honorary music fraternity. Mr. Hedrick has his church membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Warren, Alabama.

Well, I hope that everyone had a nice Easter. The weatherman cooperated and we had a perfect day for Easter egg hunts, cook outs, boating and picnics. Some spent Easter at home with their families and others traveled out of town to be with friends or relatives. Mrs. L. C. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Gallaher, Mrs. Lila Morris, Mrs. Margaret Tate and Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis were all in San Marcos during the Easter holidays to attend the 50th wedding anniversary of Mrs. Smith’s sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Ellis. Easter Sunday they were guests in the First Baptist Church of San Marcos. After church there was a reception held from 2:30 until 5 p. m. at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Buck Paine. Mrs. E. E. Christopher of Monroe and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Reno of Houston were visiting Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith over the Easter holidays. After a short stay with the Smiths, Mr. and Mrs. Reno traveled to Schicke Point where they own a summer cottage. Mr. and Mrs. Delton Tate of Fulton were down visiting friends and relatives. Congratulations to David Groves who won 10 points for the Palacios Junior High pole vaulting. Mr. Massey conducted Easter services at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday. The Massey family were guests of the Fred Laws. The Woman’s Club will hold a very important meeting at the Mopac Wednesday afternoon to make plans for Collegeport Day which will be celebrated Saturday, May 25. All women of the community are urged to attend. Our sincere thanks to Verner Bowers for the many years that he has represented our district as a trustee for the Palacios Independent School District. There were many who took advantage of the nice weather and holidays to fish, but in general there weren't many fish caught due to strong winds and rough water. Those trying their luck were Mr. and Mrs. Rhinehart of Houston who returned home with a very small catch; Dr. Matthews of Bay City tried his luck at Half Moon only to return with a few trout and gafftop. Agnes and "Blackie" Griff of Houston, no luck; Joe Roznovsky of Alta Loma, who visited Frances and Willie Rapstain, had a nice catch of blue catfish from the Brazos River; Mrs. Bessie O'Connell of Van Vleck caught only a few small drum; John Bohuslav of Markham caught several blue cats in a canal on Oyster Lake Road, they weighed from 5 to 8 pounds. Ted and Pansy Dressler of El Campo fished on Saturday. Mrs. Kopecky of El Maton, who celebrated her 93rd birthday Easter Sunday, was honored at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Blondie Domorod, with all eight of her children attending. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Manfred Jalufka who lost their place of business when it was completely destroyed by fire early Friday morning. Mrs. Dorothy Bullington, Lyn and Jackie, visited Mrs. Tootsie Kerbow and Teen Bullington in Bay City, Friday. Johnny Reynolds of Corpus Christi was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler Easter Sunday. They attended services at the First Baptist Church in Palacios. Bobby Fowler was home from the University of Houston for the holidays. Butch Bowers was also home from the University of Texas.

It seems that we’re having our March winds in April this year. We have had about a week of very strong winds which have brought high tides but there were no fish brought in with the tides. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Maddox and Mrs. Lilly Stewart of Bryan were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Maddox’s daughter and family, the Pat Jenkins’. Mr. and Mrs. R. E. (Bob) Smith of Houston spent the weekend at their summer home here. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Merck were in to see the doctor in Houston for a check-up. On return trip they visited their son, Dean Merck, Jr. and family. The S. E. Hayes’ of League City were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Murry Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Verner Bowers were in El Campo this past weekend to attend the wedding of Herbert Bowers and Ida Lozach. When returning home they visited Mr. Bowers’ mother, Mrs. E. T. Bowers of Bay City. Those home to see their parents included: Russell Law, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Derrick and daughters, Master Edwin Holsworth, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rhymes, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Merck and son, the B. B. Bryans and family, Mrs. C. H. Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Ellis, Stanley McMillan, and Miss Marilyn Johnson. We extend our sympathy to the A. Johnston family whose father succumbed in El Campo Thursday. Mr. Hedrick conducted services at the First Presbyterian Church. He was guest of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells. We are sorry to say that Mrs. L. A. Rein is still in the hospital. Mrs. Rein is at M. D. Anderson Hospital Room 512 West, Houston. Dean Merck Jr. was here for a few days helping his father, Dean Merck, in the rice fields. Ted and Pansey Dressler and Mr. and Mrs. Kopecky of El Campo were at Oyster Lake fishing over the weekend. Mrs. Pennington received a letter from Teddy and he wrote that he was to begin hunting gold soon. We all hope that he has very good luck and that he will come home soon for we are all anxious to see him. Let us know Teddy “if there really is gold in them thar hills.” Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Abner Ussery of Blessing.

On April 11, Mrs. U. S. McMillan was hostess to the Women of the Church of the Collegeport Presbyterian Church. Their large, modern home trimmed with white iron grill work is located in Tin Top, where cotton is still King, attested by the fact that the McMillan Gin is the hub around which revolves the activities of Tin Top. As usual, the meeting was well attended and opened promptly. Mrs. John Merck, Sr. presided as moderator for the study and discussion of the prescribed topic, “The King Faces Opposition.” An exceptionally interesting and well prepared presentation of her subject let to complete group participation. The members listened with much interest to the representative for the monthly emphasis “Christian Higher Education.” Mrs. Gerald Wells, chairman of the White Cross gave a detailed report of the recent drive to collect bandages and other articles to be sent to Africa and other foreign countries. Mrs. Wells expressed much satisfaction with the response of the members. A social hour followed the business meeting during which a seafood salad plate, coffee and sweets were served the guests gathered in relaxed conversation groups throughout the spacious sun-lit rooms, from the family room with its magnificent gun collection to the more formal living room, its modern decorations pointed up by a white and gold piano. Among those present were Mesdames George Hejtmanek, A. A. Penland, Fred Law, Duane Corporon, John Merck Jr., Dean Merck, P. V. Corporon, Gust Franzen, Roy Nelson, C. J. Mrs. Alice Sifford of Blessing was in Collegeport Thursday picking dewberries and visited Mrs. Lillian Jenkins and Mrs. Dorothy Bullington. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler were in San Antonio Thursday and Friday visiting Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Marshall. Belated congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Cisneros, our milkman, of El Campo who are the proud parents of a baby boy, born on Easter Sunday. Frances Rapstein has returned from Alta Loma where she visited her father who is recovering after a major operation at M. D. Anderson hospital. Happy Birthday to Mrs. Lillian Jenkins who celebrated her ? birthday on April 28. Those fishing at Oyster Lake during the week end were Mr. and Mrs. Dan Williams of Pasadena and Ted and Pansy Dressler of El Campo. The women of the community met at the Mopac Wednesday to make preparations for the annual Collegeport Day which will be held May 25. Mrs. Daisy Thompson and Mrs. Ruby Brown of Blessing were guests of the Jack Bullingtons Sunday evening. The WMS of the First Baptist Church met Tuesday from 10 to 3 o'clock. A covered dish luncheon at noon was enjoyed. Saturday visitors of the Jimmy Murrys were Mrs. Murry's mother, Mrs. L. E. Harvey and Mrs. Otha Hughes of Van Vleck and Mrs. Monnie Amundson of Houston. Mr. and Mrs. John Doughty, Ronnie, David and Karen and a friend, Rex Hudson of Houston were down at their summer home over the weekend. The Sunday School Teacher-Officer meeting for the Presbyterian Church will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Merck, Jr. Wednesday night. Dinner guests of the R. L. Corporons Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Keszler of Olivia and Mr. and Mrs. John Massey of Austin. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Fitzpatrick of Victoria visited Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells. Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. P. V. Corporon were Mr. and Mrs. Max Gist and daughter, Otti, of Bay City. Visiting the L. C. Smiths during the weekend were their son, L. C. Smith, Jr. and family of Highlands. Mrs. Dorothy Bullington had a short visit with Mrs. Clapp in Bay City Friday and Mrs. Clapp said to tell all her friends "hello." Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Franzen and sons visited Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Eager in Inez Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Franzen also attended a surprise birthday party for Earl Wilborn on Friday night in Port Lavaca. Home made ice cream and cake were served to the 21 persons present for the occasion.

Steve Calvin Kerr, student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, May 5. Mr. Kerr received a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Lamar State College of Technology in 1962. He was formerly employed by the Mobil Oil Company of Beaumont and has served three years in the U. S. Marines in Korea. He is married to the former Bobbie Brown of Beaumont. He has his church membership in the Second Presbyterian Church of that city.

I'm sure that everyone enjoyed the much needed rain that we got last week. All of the spring gardens and crops really needed it. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Morris and Mrs. Victor Gallaher were in Houston last Tuesday for Mr. Morris to see his doctor for a check up before he and Mrs. Morris returned to their home in Selma, Alabama. Mrs. Perciville (Mother of Mrs. Lawrence Hill) is doing much better. She spent a few days in the hospital after a fall from which she received a cut requiring several stitches. Mr. and Mrs. Morris and Mrs. Victor Gallaher were in Houston on Tuesday. Mr. Morris was in to see his doctor for a check up. Mr. and Mrs. Morris have returned to Selma, Alabama. Brazos Oil and Gas held their annual company Bar-b-Que at the Riverside Country Club at Lake Jackson Saturday. Those attending from Collegeport included the Duane Corporons, The Jack Bullingtons and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, Jr. son Patten visited Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, Sr. and family enroute from Rockport where they had been visiting Mrs. Jenkins' family Mr. and Mrs. Dyso. Dorothy Bullington was guest of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Slaughter of Bay City Tuesday. Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. P. V. Corporon were Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Holloway of Palacios. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Corporon and family of San Antonio were guests of the R. L. Corporons over the weekend. The WOC of the first Presbyterian Church will meet Thursday at the home of Mrs. A. A. Penland at 2:30. Mr. Steve Kerr conducted services at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday. The Kerr's were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Merck. Mr. Kerr is to be the minister for the summer. A First Aid Class will be held early in June at the Mopac. There will be two sessions each week for two weeks. The class will be open to men, women and young people. The Kirkpatrick sisters of Palacios were visiting Mrs. Mamie Pennington Sunday evening. "Chili" Saunders and "Unk" Ellis both of Houston are spending a few days at Oyster Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Smith of Cleveland, Texas dropped by for a short visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith after a trip to Rockport where he visited his aunt and other relatives. Mrs. Vic Gallaher, Mrs. A. A. Penland, Mrs. Chester Corporon and Rev. Bob McKinney attended Vacation Bible School clinic in Wharton last Friday. Mrs. Luther Hill of Fulton is spending a few days here with friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Tucker and the Bill Marshalls of San Antonio were weekend guests in the Fred Roesler home. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith and children were in Houston Saturday. Mr. Smith went for a check-up with his doctor. They all spent the weekend in Cleveland with their son and friends. On Sunday they all attended a reunion dinner at Fostonia for all the old Fostonia Pioneers.

Spending the day with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ackerman were Mr. and Mrs. Evans and children, Martin and Elaine of Palacios. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith spent the weekend at Lake Houston visiting the E. R. Daws. Guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Ellis were Walter Dowell and family of Houston. Mrs. Florence Ellis was in Houston Wednesday visiting Mr. Lewis and Mrs. Dowell. On the return trip she stopped at Cleveland to get Hardy Mizell and bring him home with her. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Morris were in Fulton to visit Mr. and Mrs. Tate and Mrs. Hill. There were many at Oyster Lake over the weekend and many fish catches reported. Ted and Vic Kopecky of El Campo reported a nice catch of Reds weighing an average of about 3 pounds apiece. "Chili" Saunders who is spending his vacation at Oyster Lake landed some nice flounder off the point. The Reinharts of Houston caught some nice eating size trout. And by the way there is a plentiful supply of live bait at Willie's Bait Camp, Oyster Lake. Mr. Taylor, Mr. Welsh, and Mrs. Wickham all of Palacios reported some nice catches last week, while fishing at the Tres-Palacios River. They caught Drum weighing from three to four pounds and Reds from seven to nine pounds, Sheepshead and also a few fresh water cat fish. Half Moon was also a good spot during the week but the south west winds sprang up and slowed fishing. Weekly fishermen found the best of luck during the week bringing in nice catches of trout and gall top. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler are vacationing in Louisiana. Congratulations to Rev. and Mrs. James Slone of Cuero who have a new baby boy born last week. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ware of Collegeport and Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Slone of Wadsworth. They named him James Clyde. He weighed six pounds, 16 ounces. The Pat Jenkins family spent Sunday at Jones Creek near Freeport. Ira Corporon is in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Houston for major surgery this week.

Francis Raptain spent Mother’s Day with her parents and son in Alta Loma. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ware were in San Antonio for Mother’s Day to be with their daughter, Anne whose husband, James Dunn, had surgery at the Baptist Memorial Hospital. The Wares were met there by their other son and wife, Dugger and Sharon of Del Rio. David Groves, who lives with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mixon, became a member of the church last Sunday when the session accepted his letter from the Portland Presbyterian Church. Our best wishes to Roy Corporon who has asked his church letter be transferred to the Methodist Church in Point Comfort. Sixteen members attended the Women of the Church meeting held in the home of Mrs. A. A. Penland Thursday afternoon. Lost or strayed from our home, my black female rat terrier dog named “Gal.” She has a bobbed tail and was last seen around Tin Top on Wadsworth Highway. She has been vaccinated, but was not wearing her collar and tag when she disappeared. If anyone sees her please call me, Jackie Bullington, 824-2195.

Mrs. A. A. Penland was hostess to the Presbyterian Women of the church of Collegeport at her home on Oyster Lake Road on May 9. Mrs. Fred Law was moderator for the day and led in the study and ensuing discussion of the topical subject "The King Is Identified," stressing the point that our experiences are the foundation on which faith is built. Mrs. John Merck Sr. was the representative for the "monthly emphasis," and an extremely well prepared and stimulating program was presented in the form of a playet, with the roles played by the members of the circle. Much concern has been felt for the plight of the poverty stricken natives of the Brazilian jungles. The detailed report from the missionaries, of the proposed highway to be built through the heart of the Brazilian jungle encourages the hope that the villages which will be built along the highway will bring about a new life to these natives, and an economic relief to those so urgently in need. A suggestion was proposed that the circle would make a study to find out if it would be probable to establish an outlet and limited market for the handi-crafts of these needy people. At the close of the business session, homemade ice cream, coffee and cookies were served by the hostess. Among those present were Mesdames R. L. Corporon, Duane Corporon, P. V. Corporon, Gerald Wells, Gust Franzen. Mesdames Roy Nelson, Dean Merck, Fred Law, John Merck Sr., John Merck Jr., Bruce Key, E. A. Nixon, George Hejtmanek and C. J. Williams.

Mr. and Mrs. Morris were in Houston Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Damon Gerlach. The Home-Coming Collegeport Day will be held on May 25 at the Mopac. This will be a covered dish affair. We hope that all former residents will come. And every one else is cordially invited. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Ellis of Beeville were home to see his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis. We are glad to hear that Mrs. Gus Franzen and Derril have recovered from the mumps. Mr. Salvant conducted services at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday. The Salvant family were dinner guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Corporon. We hope that Mrs. Mae Perciville, who just had surgery in Bay City Wednesday, a speedy recovery. L. A. Rein of League City writes that Mrs. Rein is now home and is doing much better. They both send thanks for the many cards and letters they received while Mrs. Rein was in M. D. Anderson Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Slaughter of Bay City and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Drehes and children of Rockdale were in Collegeport last week. They visited the Jack Bullington's and the Pat Jenkins families, and then went on to Oyster Lake for some fishing and crabbing. Lil Gloria Junek of El Maton is in the Shriners Hospital in Houston for surgery this week. Best of luck Gloria and we sure hope you will be up and out of there real soon. We will all the thinking about you. Cotton chopping is now well under way. If we ever get the weather adjusted to fit everyone's needs we'll be sure to make the headlines. There will be a First Aid Class held in the Mopac first of June. The class will be for men and women. Everyone is urged to attend. Mrs. Melvin of Bay City was visiting Mrs. Charlie Williams on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. John Merck Jr. were in Midway this week visiting Mrs. M. G. Simmons. Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Law Jr. of Bay City were visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Law Sr. Saturday. Jerry Ellis and Suzette Wynn were united in holy matrimony Saturday May 18 in the Presbyterian church of Rockport. Those attending the wedding from Collegeport were Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis and Tommy and Mrs. Victor Gallaher. Dan and Elsie Williams of Pasadena and Ted and Pansy Dressler of El Campo were down for the weekend making some repairs on their summer homes after it was broken into some time this past week by vandals. Also they fished at Half Moon Reef catching about one hundred trout. Others staying at their summer homes were: Ted and Pansey Dressler, of El Campo, the John Doughty's, the B. B. Burns' both of Houston and Mr. and Mrs. Lipensky and family also of Houston. Francis Rapstain spent Mother's Day with her parents and son in Alta Loma. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ware were in San Antonio for Mother's Day and also to be with her daughter, Anne, whose husband had surgery at the Baptist Memorial Hospital there. He is Mr. James Dunn.

The Women’s Club of Collegeport is sponsoring the Annual Home Coming with a covered dish dinner at the Mopac at noon on Collegeport Day, Saturday, May 25th. Former residents are invited. Collegeport, a rural community in the southern part of Matagorda County, where ranching, rice and cotton farming are the chief occupations, is a very closely knit community where the U. S. postoffice, the Baptist and Presbyterian churches and the Mopac (the community center) were the only meeting places left when Carla played havoc to all the business houses in September 1961.

The 54th anniversary of Collegeport Day was celebrated Saturday May 25 at the Mopac. There were many oldtimers who came from far and near. There was said to have been approximately 300 present at the dinner. There were people from Brownsville, Houston, Dallas, Angleton and other surrounding areas. We would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Robbins for furnishing the meat and Taylor Brothers Funeral Home for the public address system. Rev. Bill Hodge of Baytown gave the invocation. Harold Jenkins of Madisonville was home visiting friends and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins. Mrs. J. F. Kilpatrick and Mrs. C. E. Wilson of Dallas were weekend guests in the home of the Dean Merck's. Visiting Mrs. John Merck over the weekend was Mrs. Gerald Merck of San Antonio. There were many from Collegeport and the surrounding area who attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. John Ackerman of Blessing. Mrs. Dowell and Tommy of Houston are spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Ellis. Mrs. Elsie Williams was a coffee guest of Dorothy Bullington Tuesday morning. Everyone be sure and remember the First Aid Class that is to be held June 4, 6, 11 and 13 at the Mopac. Russell Law and Butch Bowers will be home from college (University of Texas) Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Law and family of Bay City were visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs.. Fred Law, Friday night. Mrs. Dean Merck, of Collegeport, honored Miss Mary Jo Blackwell, a Palacios High School senior, with a Come-As-You-Are breakfast Saturday, May 25 at her home. She was assisted by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Dean Merck, Jr., of League City. The guests were seated around the large dining table which held a bowl of mixed fruit. Fruit juice, cantaloupe cubes, sweet bread, hot cakes bacon and coffee were served. While still seated at the table, the girls revealed their future educational goals. The hostess gift to the honoree was lingerie. Attending were the honoree and Misses Beverlay Morgan, Linda Dillard, Emily Weakley, Linda Dillard, Emily Weakley, Bonnie Chamblee, Carolyn Maddox, Jan Zimmerman, Lana Alzner, Sue Brotemarkle, Mary Louise Friery, Bonnie Nobel, Andrea Peoples and Sandra Abraham.

At last what we have been waiting for is here, vacation. I imagine that everyone is enjoying it too. Congratulations and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Threadgill, who were married May 29 in Corpus Christi. She was the former Paula Groves, grand-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Mixon. Mr. and Mrs. Mixon and David Groves attended the wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Duane Corporon and family are spending their vacation in Mississippi with her mother. We are glad to hear that Gus Franzen is up and about after a bout with the mumps. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Corporon are adding a few last minute touches to their new home. They plan to hold open house June 16. Visiting the Jack Bullingtons over the Memorial Day weekend were Miss Sandra Schneider, Miss Phillis Rowton, Grace Hoffman, Larry Griffin, Dolan Dixon and Joette Garza all of Palacios. Ira Corporon is recuperating from surgery in the Veterans Hospital in Houston. Congratulations to Larry Corporon, Virginia McMillan, Kenneth Chaplin and Lyn Bullington who all graduated from Junior High School Wednesday night. Johnny Renolds of Corpus Christi and Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Marshal of San Antonio were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler over the weekend. Weekend visitors of the Pat Jenkins were Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Genzer and family of Madisonville. They were accompanied by their daughter Mrs. Barbara McVey also of Madisonville. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Derrick of Waco were here to see friends and relatives. Ted and Pansey Dressler of El Campo stayed at their summer home over the Memorial Day weekend. Last weeks visitor in the First Presbyterian Church were: Miss Alice Jurek, Mrs. Gerald Merck, Mrs. J. F. Kilpatrick, Mrs. C. H. Wilson, Mrs. Gilbert Ellis and Brentt and Mrs. Jesse Ellis. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kerr who moved into the Manse and say that they are happily located for the summer. We extend a warm welcome to them.

Sorry I missed last week but it was a busy one for me, but haven't they all been. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler had as their guest last week Noni Hendrix of Bay City. Dr. and Mrs. Teddy Whitmire of Monahans are visiting friends and relatives in Blessing and Collegeport this week. Mrs. Whitmire is the former Pat Thompson, a former citizen of Collegeport. I would like to congratulate two of my cousins who graduated from school this year. They are Miss Kay Bullington who finished high school at Mexia, Texas, and Ronnie Joe Brigmon from Grand Prairie, Texas. Harold Jenkins was home this past week for a short visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins. Harold has been living in Madisonville where he is employed. A speedy recovery to Mrs. Thomas Holsworth's father, W. L. Reitz, who is a patient at Wagner General Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. John Ackerman of Blessing were Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ackerman. Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Merck, Jr. and family of League City spent the week end with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Corporon had their daughter and family, the Robert Keszlers of Point Comfort, home for the week end. We're sorry to hear John Merck Jr. is sick with a virus. We hope to see him up and about soon. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells' grandsons, Steve and Allen Fitzpatrick have returned to their home in Victoria after a short stay here while their mother was recuperating from a neck injury received in an accident when her car was struck from the rear. Lynda Wells returned with her sister, Mrs. H. E. Fitzpatrick of Victoria. Mrs. Carl Rhymes of Bay City has been spending a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Wells. Those down at their summer homes this week end included: Mr. and Mrs. Jay Cates, the Paul Lipenskys, Mr. and Mrs. Rhinehart, all of Houston; Ted and Pansy Dressler of El Campo and Dr. and Mrs. Harry Barnes of Bay City. The Pat Jenkins and the Jack Bullington families were fishing in some of the local rice canals Thursday with good luck catching approximately 38 fish, including some very nice fresh water bass, white perch and channel cats. Also caught were several gars weighing from 18 to 20 pounds. Afterwards they enjoyed a cook-out of fried fish, fried potatoes and hush puppies at the Pat Jenkins home. Mr. and Mrs. Olla Ogden of Sweeny also attended the fish fry. Mr. and Mrs. Fred King were dinner guests of Mrs. Rhoda King and Buddy King of Bay City Sunday. The Ellis family held a family reunion Saturday, June 8, at the Mopac. They were reported to have had a good attendance with the sum totaling approximately 50. Mr. and Mrs. Percy Corporon and Larry are spending the week end in Marble Falls. The Duane Corporons are also visiting friends and relatives in Marble Falls. Fredrick Law and family of Bay City visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Law over the week end. L. C. and Grace Smith were fishing at Collegeport Cove last week, with a nice catch of trout. Vacation Bible School started at the First Baptist Church Monday. All are cordially invited to attend. Hardy Mizell has returned home to Cleveland after spending several weeks with Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Ellis.

At last we’ve gotten the much needed rain. I’m sure that everyone is glad of that. Mrs. C. J. Williams is in Houston to be with her daughter, Mrs. Charles Angelo, who underwent surgery. Ira Corporon has returned to the Veterans Hospital. Bible School will be held at the First Presbyterian Church June 24 through June 28 from 3:30 to 5:00 in the evening. On Friday June 28 at 6:00 there will be a picnic supper on the lawn. The Pat Jenkins family spent a few days in Rockport last week visiting their son and family Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins Jr. and Patten. Hardy Mizell returned home to Cleveland after spending a few days with his sister and family Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Ellis. Dinner guest of the Jack Bullingtons on Sunday were Mrs. Daisy Thompson of Blessing and grandchildren, Teddy and Tammie Whitmire of Monahans and Mrs. Tootsie Kerbow of Bay City. Stanley Ward of Cincinnati, Ohio visited Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler last week. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Huitt and Jay of Palacios visited her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Fred Law, on Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Corporon held open house at their new home in Citrus Grove Sunday evening from 3:00 until 6:00. There were approximately 130 people present. Mr. and Mrs. Corporon also had their children Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Corporon and family, of San Antonio, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Corporon and children of Point Comfort and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Keszler also of Point Comfort home for the open house. Russell Law was home from the University of Houston visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Law. The Jack Bullingtons were at Matagorda Beach Thursday fishing and swimming. Ted and Pansey Dressler of El Campo were down at their summer home over the weekend. They had as visitors on Saturday night Elsie and “Red” Farmer. MeIvin Gallott of Bay City was visiting Jack Bullington on Sunday evening. Vacation Bible School at the First Baptist Church ended Friday with a program on Friday night. Mr. and Mrs. Wade Blackwell had all of their children home for the Father’s Day holiday, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Blackwell of Rockport, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Starks and family of Corpus Christi and Neil and Willene Blackwell of Bay City. Dan and Elsie Williams of Pasadena spent the weekend at their summer cottage. Mrs. Cook Stapleton is confined to the Wagner General Hospital. We hope to see her up and about soon. Margie Darnell of Palacios dropped in for a few hours on Sunday to visit Lyn and Jackie Bullington. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roesler returned Monday from San Antonio where they visited Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Marshall. Chili Saunders of Houston has returned home after spending his two weeks vacation at Oyster Lake. Mary Jo Blackwell has returned home after spending several weeks with her sister Mrs. Patricia Cheeley of Tomball. Lynette Jenkins spent the weekend with Doris Fitzmorris of Palacios. We’re sorry to hear that Mrs. Hattie Kundinger is in the hospital. She is in room 37, Nightingale Hospital in El Campo. We hope to see her up and about soon. Ronnie Hejtmanek is also under the weather with a badly dislocated shoulder. He is in Matagorda General Hospital, Room 138, Bay City. Get well soon. The Charlie Chaplins are spending a three-week vacation in Massachusetts. We hope that they have a very nice trip. Everyone remember Vacation Bible School at the First Presbyterian Church this week from 3:30 until 6:00 and the supper Friday evening at 6 p. m. Jack Bullingotn spent Friday and Saturday at Bulllington’s Camp on the Bernard River with his two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Brown and Mrs. Daisy Thompson both of Blessing. On Saturday he was joined by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Bullington, Lyn and Jackie. They all had a very enjoyable stay. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Gates and grandchildren of Houston are vacationing at their summer home. It was reported that the bait supply is plentiful everywhere. Oyster Lake and all of the camps on the Bernard River, but was said that there were no fish caught anywhere. It seems that there just aren’t any fish to be anywhere. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith and family are vacationing in Houston and Cleveland with friends and relatives. The First Presbyterian Church now holds Youth meetings on Sunday at 4:00. All youth are urged to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Rhinehart of Houston spent the weekend at their summer home. They fished at Oyster Lake with no luck. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins and Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Jurek spent a few days at Bracketville last week checking on their deer lease for the next hunting season. Butch Bowers is home after a short stay in Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Mamie Pennington visited Mrs. Gordon Starr last week who is a patient in Wagner General hospital. Laurence Hill visited Jack Bullington last Thursday evening.

Thursday, June 13, Mrs. John Merck, Mrs. Gerald Wells and Mrs. Earl Cockburn were hostesses for the June meeting of the Presbyterian Women of the Church of Collegeport at the ranch home of the Cockburns, known as the old “Johnny Pierce Place.” The house has stood for almost three quarters of a century, a tall white sentinel on the banks of the Tres Palacios bay, whose waters are coming ever closer by the erosion of many storms and lashing waves, a legend and a landmark clearly visible for many miles. A house so built that from each room there is a view of the bay. When the meeting had been called to order, the topic for discussion, “The King Claims His Kingdom,” was introduced by the moderator for the day, Mrs. A. A. Penland. A fresh and vivid approach to the subject, welcome as breeze on a muggy day, was injected into the discussion by two visitors, Mrs. Bill Hodge and Mrs. Steve Kerr, both wives of young ministers. Views which were both stimulating and thought provoking, particularly in relation to the world crises and daily explosions of racial strife. A thorough and comprehensive report on the work of the nine General Fund agencies was presented by Mrs. P. V. Corporon. During the social hour, following the business meeting, a buffet luncheon was served from the dining room, consisting of tea sandwiches, punch, petit fours, other sweets and coffee. Among those present were: Miss Margaret Holsworth, Mesdames Duane Corporon, George Hejtmanek, Gustave Franzen, M. S. Holsworth, Ellen Franzen, John Merck, Roy Nelson, Rob Wells, Steve Kerr, Bill Hodge, Dean Merck, R. L. Corporon, Fred Law, Gerald Wells, W. L. Ellis, U. S. I’m sure that everyone has been enjoying the rain we’ve been having just about every day. I imagine that some of these farmers are ready for it to stop. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Verner Bowers this past week were the S. R. Flewellen family and Mr. and Mrs. John McConnell all of Bellaire, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Bowers’ grandchildren, Rocky and Stewart Flewellen, are staying a week with them. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith had home for the week end their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Smith of Cleveland. Miss Larri Lin Smith returned home with them for a short stay while Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Smith’s son Randy stayed here to visit. Mrs. Earl Hill of Angleton is down for the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Dowell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Ellis, were presented with a fine baby girl on June 27. She was named Linda Lea. Congratulations. Mrs. Mozelle Williams is in California visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Williams. Some 45-50 people attended the supper that followed the Vacation Bible School at the First Presbyterian Church. Everyone had a nice time. In spite of the weather there were quite a few who were down at their summer homes. They were Mr. and Mrs. Dan Williams of Pasadena, Mr. and Mrs. Rhinehart of Houston and the B. B. Byrnes of Houston. We’re certainly happy to hear that the Mopac Community House is being remodeled. They’re putting new asbestos shingles on and new windows. The inside is also being redone. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith Jr. of Highland spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wells accompanied Mrs. Dorothy Merck on a trip to League City to celebrate their grandson’s sixth birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells and Lynda spent Sunday in Victoria with their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Fitzpatrick. Mrs. Wells was honored with a birthday dinner. Stanley McMillan, who is attending A. & I. College at Kingsville spent the week end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. U. S. McMillan. His fiancé, Miss Marilyn Johnson of Louise also spent Sunday with the McMillans. Mrs. Gilbert Ellis and son are spending a few days with her husband’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis. We’re all glad to hear that Mrs. Hattie Kundinger is home from the hospital. Jesse and Carolyn Ellis of Beeville were home Saturday and Sunday visiting friends and relatives. Mrs. Minnie Koonce of Beaumont, mother of Mrs. Thelma Williams, is in the hospital. Butch Bowers and David Brades of East Bernard spent a few days in Omaha, Nebraska last week.

The farmers are all busy in the rice fields. Many have already started to harvest. Those who had maize have it cut by now. We’re sorry to hear that Fred Roesler is on the sick list. He is in Wagner General Hospital at Palacios. We hope to see him up and about soon. We’d like to welcome a new comer to our community, Mrs. Earl Hill. She moved into her new home Monday. Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Ellis were in Houston this past week getting acquainted with their new granddaughter, little Miss Linda Dowell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dowell. Mrs. Gerald Wells will be honored with a Stork Shower on Saturday, July 20, at 3 p. m. in the home of Mrs. R. L. Corporon. Visiting the Kerrs on Saturday were Mrs. Kerr’s brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brown and Lisa Lynn. Bobby Fowler is home on a two week leave from the U. S. Navy at San Diego. We hope he has an enjoyable stay. Mrs. B. B. Bryan, Margaret and Bobby, of Lafayette, La. are visiting Mrs. Gus Franzen. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Fitzpatrick and sons of Victoria spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells and Lynda. Dean S. Merck of League City spent Saturday in Collegeport. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Ellis of Beeville were here for the week end visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Corporon had home over the weekend their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Keszler of Point Comfort. Stanley McMillan is home from Kingsville where he has been attending A. & I. College for the remainder of the summer. Weekend visitors of the Fred Roeslers included Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Hendrix and Buck Beard of Beaumont and Johnny Reynolds of Corpus Christi. Mrs. A. G. Fitzgerald has a birthday coming up on July 26. The women of the First Presbyterian Church have planned a birthday card shower for her that week. Don’t anyone forget. There were many who took advantage of the nice weather to fish and relax at their summer homes. Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Boyd of Van Vleck and nephew, Rex Hare of Pasadena, spent the week end at their summer home at Oyster Lake. Emma and John Rapstain of Pearland are at Oyster Lake for a few weeks of their vacation. Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Rhinehart of Houston and Bessie O’Connell of Van Vleck were down Saturday and Sunday doing some fishing. They reported a nice catch of trout. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Derrick of Waco visited Mrs. Derrick’s mother, Mrs. Ethel Holsworth. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Williams of Pasadena, Pat and Lillian Jenkins, Jack and Dorothy Bullington all fished at the Collegeport Slough with nice catches of red fish. The biggest, caught by Dorothy Bullington, weighed approximately 4 pounds. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday, July 21. They were honored with a barbecue at the home of Mr. and Mrs. “Red” Farmer. Mrs. Farmer was also celebrating her birthday. Approximately 50 people attend.

The July meeting of the Collegeport Women of the Presbyterian Church met on the afternoon of July 11, with Mrs. Fred Law and Mrs. Bruce Kay as hostesses. The study and discussion for the day was “The Passover Meal and Jesus’ Farewell to His Disciples.” Borrowing the drama and solemnity of that sorrowful occasion, the comments and discussion of the group members showed the awareness of each of the privilege of the personal emotional experience of their union with God. During the discussion of the use of “unleavened” brad, and its significance Mrs. Gus Franzen, Sr., one of the early settlers, reminisced about the days when the pioneer women used the foam from the top of the water of the bay to “leaven” their bread, when yeast was not available. The representative for the monthly emphasis, “Christian Citizenship” stressed the ever increasing responsibilities of the Christian citizens, in the state, the nation and the world. During the social hour which followed the business meeting, the hostesses served iced drinks, coffee, sandwiches and cookies. Among those present were Mesdames Steve Kerr, R. L. Corporon, Gerald Wells, P. V. Corporon, Roy Nelson, W. L. Ellis, Fred Law, E. A. Mixon, Bruce Kay, John Merck, Gus Franzen, Dean Merck, Gustave Franzen Sr., and George Hejtmanek Sr.

Collegeport items are few as our regular correspondent Jackie Bullington, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bullington and sister, Lyn are on vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Clint Sadler of San Antonio were guests Sunday night and Monday in the Gustave Franzen home. Mrs. Sadler was a college friend and roommate of Mrs. Franzen. Mrs. Dean Merck honored her grandsons, Mark and Russell Merck of League City last Thursday by inviting friends to come for a morning of play and lunch. Those present for the occasion were John Milam Merck, G. W. and Derril Franzen and Jerry Chaplin. Mr. and Mrs. Dean S. Merck and sons have returned to their home in League City after spending two weeks in Collegeport with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Merck and Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Wells. Miss Lynda Wells has returned home after spending a week in Victoria with her sister, Mrs. H. E. Fitzpatrick and family.

Situated for beauty, and standing high above the banks of the Tres Palacios River, is the W. L. Ellis home, scene of the August meeting of the Collegeport Women of the Presbyterian Church. The meeting was highlighted by the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kerr. Mr. Kerr, a Seminary student and pastor during the past summer has endeared himself to his many Collegeport friends by the dramatic simplicity and directness of his sermons. Mrs. Dean Merck was moderator for the day and her skillful handling of the discussion, “The King is disgraced,” together with the enthusiastic and vivid contributions of both Mr. and Mrs. Kerr, made the day one long to be remembered. Mrs. Kerr, who substituted for the absent representative of the “Monthly Emphasis,” awakened apathetic thought to the glorious possibilities of personal evangelism. During the social hour, the hostess, Mrs. W. L. Ellis, served coffee, iced drinks and sweets to her guests. Among those present were Mesdames Gust Franzen Sr., Roy Nelson, E. A. Mixon, Dean Merck, John Merck Sr., P. V. Corporon, R. L. Corporon, John Merck Jr., R. L. Wells, Gerald Wells, Miss Margaret Holsworth and the honored guests Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kerr.

The long Labor Day week end brought many fishermen to this area. Some went home with nice catches, others did not do so well—but most everyone caught a few. Live bait was plentiful. Dan and Elsie Williams of Pasadena had a nice string of trout (57) taken off Half Moon reef, weighing from 2 to 4 ½ pounds. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ackerman and Mr. and Mrs. Morris brought in some nice reds from Collegeport Cove. Largest was a 4 ½ pounder. Mrs. Grace Smith and Mrs. Lilia Morris had luck at Collegeport Slough, back of Bullington’s place. They had some nice reds and trout. The best catch I’ve seen this year (failed to get names) was brought into Covey’s at Palacios. A wash tub and two ice boxes of trout. The largest trout was 5 ¾ lbs. These were taken from Half Moon Reef. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lipensky and children, the Raymond Lipensky family, Mr. and Mrs. John Doughty, of Houston, Dan and Elsie Williams, of Pasadena, spent the week end here at their summer places. Labor Day week end guests of the Jack Bullingtons were Jack and Sandy Mickelson, Lil Jack, Denise and Lorraine, all of Houston, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Slaughter of Bay City. They all enjoyed a chicken barbecue with all the trimmings and home made ice cream. Van Williams has returned to California after spending several weeks here with friends and relatives. Hardy Mizell of Cleveland, Texas spent a few days with his sister, Mrs. Florence Ellis. Johnny Penland has received his greetings from Uncle Sam. He leaves Thursday for the U. S. Army. Good luck, Johnny. Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Wooster of Baytown were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ackerman. Mrs. Wooster is a sister of Mrs. Ackerman. After a visit with their mother, Mrs. Mary Kopecky in Blessing, they all enjoyed a delicious barbecue dinner at the “Bean Pot.” Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells and Lynda spent Sunday and Monday in Austin getting acquainted with their new grand daughter and niece Melon Rene. Russell Law is getting ready to enter law school. Mrs. Erlene Kilgore of Tampa, Fla. is visiting her mother, Mrs. Zelphia Hill and getting acquainted with her new grand daughter. A family re-union was held at the R. L. Wells home Saturday to celebrate Carl’s birthday. The P. V. Corporons are off to Marble Falls with a load of furniture for their lake home. The Bruce Kay family spent the Labor Day weekend with their family in Alice.

What seems to be “Headlines” on this side of the bay is fishing, red fish that is. Where they were caught, how many, what they weighed and what have you? Seems as if this past week was lucky for everyone, as everyone I talked with caught reds or some variety of fish, none went home with empty stringers. The biggest reds were taken at the head of Oyster Lake by Gilbert Tate and his fishing party from Ft. Worth. They brought in some Bull Reds (I’d call them) they weighed 10-12 ½ pounds and were real beauties. Mr. Tate headed back to “Cow-Town” Monday with over 100 pounds of fish, and a very happy guy, I might add. Other catches, 5 and 6 pounders, were made by Chili Saunders of Houston and Jack Bullington. These were also taken at Oyster Lake. Mr. and Mrs. R. Reinhart, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Williams, of Houston, caught nice trout and few reds at Half Moon reef, also a number of large gafftops. I’d say September has been a good month as far as fishing and I know everyone is enjoying these cool mornings. Week end visitors of the Jack Bullingtons were Mr. and Mrs. Speck Long of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Mrs. Ethel Brigmon and son, Lonnie, of Freeport, Texas. Celebrating birthdays this week end were Ronnie Hejtmanek and Miss Linda Wells. Happy birthday to both. Russell Law off to law school in Austin. Mrs. E. A. Mixon left by car for Gulfport, Miss. Thursday to visit relatives. Charlie Chaplin is busy remodeling their home while on his two weeks off. L. A. Rein of League City writes that Mrs. Rein is much improved. We were glad to hear this good report.

The Rev. Lyndon Brown of Austin Seminary filled the pulpit of the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Brown and family were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Law. Visitors at the Presbyterian Church for the morning worship were E. L. Groves and Mrs. Nicky Groves of Corpus Christi, Mrs. Jesse Derrick and girls of Waco, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Rusk and family of Rt. 1, Palacios and Miss Marilyn Johnson of Louise. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Wells Sr. and Lynda visited Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Wells Jr. and new daughter, Meloni Rene at Austin this past week end. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, Jr. as they are the proud parents of a new baby boy born Sept. 26 at Corpus Christi. He weighed 8 pounds 15 1/2 ounces and has been named Jerry Wayne. Dean Merck and Billy Halfen were in Houston last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Corporon were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Corporon and family at Point Comfort. On the sick list this week are Mrs. Roy Nelson, who is confined to Wagner General Hospital, and Mrs. Tootsie Kerbow, who is a patient at Matagorda General Hospital. We wish a speedy recovery for both. Mrs. C. H. Wilson of Deutschburg is visiting her daughter and family, the Gus Franzens. Stanley McMillan, who is a junior at A. & I., Kingsville, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. U. S. McMillan. Harold Jenkins of Madisonville spent Friday and Saturday with his family here, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins Sr. Mrs. Daisy Thompson of Blessing and Teen Bullington of Bay City visited the Jack Bullingtons. They all fished at Coon Island and Collegeport Slough and had a nice catch of rat red and trout. But the lucky fisherman (or fisherwoman) was Mrs. Emily Ackerman who caught three red fish that were real beauties from Collegeport Slough. The largest was a 7 1/2 pounder. She also landed a gar that weighed about 11 pounds. Chile Saunders, who has spent the last couple of months at Oyster Lake returned to his home in Houston Sunday. Speaking of fish, Willie Rapstain of Oyster Lake caught what I'd say was a real freak. He called it a Siamese catfish as it was tw small "hard heads" grown together at the stomach just like Siamese twins. if you're down that way take a look at it. We are glad to report that Mrs. Roy Nelson, confined to Wagner General Hospital this past week, is feeling much better. We hope she will soon be up and about and will be able to come home soon. Mrs. Betty Wells and daughter, Meloni, have joined Gerald Wells Jr. at Ft. Sill, Okla., where he is stationed with the U. S. Army. Johnny Penland is getting his basic training at Ft. Polk, La. It was tough luck for Kenneth Chaplin who suffered a fractured nose while practicing football this past week. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Franzen who are the proud parents of a baby daughter born September 30 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton. She weighed seven pounds 5 1/2 ounces and has been named Terri Lyn. Awaiting anxiously at home for the arrival of their little sister are the two very proud brothers, Derril and G. W. Last Sunday visitors to the First Presbyterian Church were Mrs. Gilbert Ellis and Brent of Palacios, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Ellis and Mrs. Nicki Groves of Corpus Christi. Mr. Langhart filled the pulpit at the First Presbyterian Church. He was a guest in the Dean Merck home. Pat McKissick and sons, Jimmy and "Brother," Jack Bullington and Jack Maha spent Thursday night on Matagorda Peninsula fishing and floundering. The catch was small. Brother did hang a couple of huge stingrays, played one for about an hour before it finally broke his line. Pat caught a 65-lb. salt water gar which gave him a rough time before he finally landed him. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ware and Mr. and Mrs. Rob Wells were in Madisonville Monday to attend the funeral of their aunt. Most of the farmers have finished their harvest. Those who have a second crop of rice plan to start cutting this week. Hope they all get it cut before the fall rains begin. Call me if you have any news at 824-2195.

Richard Blyth Poteet, senior student at the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday October 13. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Austin College in Sherman, where he was a member of the national classical languages fraternity, Eta Sigma Phi. Mr. Poteet worked forty hours per week in the newspaper business while earning his degree. Since his graduation he has served as simmer assistant minister of the Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, summer chaplain intern at M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, and has done a year-long internship as assistant minister at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Beaumont. He is married to the former Alice Bell of Houston and has his church membership in the First Presbyterian Church there.

Mr. Poteet of Austin brought the message at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday. He was a guest in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Cockburn. We are very glad that Mrs. Roy Nelson has returned home from Wagner General Hospital where she was a patient for several days. The Women of the Church met at the home of Mrs. R. L. Corporon last Thursday. Mrs. Robert Kessler and Mrs. Russell Corporon assisted Mrs. Corporon during the social hour. Butch Bowers and Russell Law were home from Law School at Austin this week end visiting parents and friends. Harold Jenkins of Madisonville got his greetings from Uncle Sam. He reports to the draft board in Bay City on October 24. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins Sr. were in Rockport last week visiting Pat Jr. and family and getting acquainted with their new grandson, Jerry Wayne. Mrs. B. B. Bryan of Lafayette, La. was here over the week end visiting her mother Mrs. Gustave Franzen and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Merck Jr. and family of League City spent Saturday here visiting their families, the Dean Mercks and R. L. Wells. Mr. and Mrs. John Merck Jr. and family were in Midway Sunday to spend the day with her parents, the G. M. Simons. Mr. and Mrs. P. V. Corporon spent the week end at their new home at Granite Shoals, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Ira Corporon of Marble Falls are spending a few days here visiting old friends and relatives. Mrs. Florence Ellis visited her daughters and their families in Houston last week. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ware spent the week end in San Antonio visiting their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Dunn. We are sorry to hear that Mr. Dunn is in the hospital again. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Morris have returned to Selma, Ala. for a month. They were accompanied to Monroe, La. by Mrs. C. D. Sanders who went on to Nashville, Tenn. The best catch that I have heard of lately was a 28-pound red caught in the surf at Matagorda Peninsula. The lucky fisherman was “Brother” McKissick. This red was 43 inches long and he had him mounted to hang on the wall of the den of their new home in Ashby. Fishing was rather slow this week. There were some rat reds and trout taken at Collegeport Cove by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ackerman and Mrs. Grace Smith. Therran Robinson of Ashby was taken by ambulance to the Veterans Hospital in Houston where he is scheduled for surgery for slipped disc in his back this week. We wish him the best of luck. Dan Williams of Houston was down this week end at his summer place. He did some fishing and dove hunting. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith over the week end were Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith Jr. of Highland, Texas; W. C. Smith and family of Cleveland; E. E. Smith and family, T. F. Smith and family of Conroe and Mrs. L. O. Hill of Fulton.

On October 10th, the Presbyterian Women of the Church of Collegeport met at the Corporon home in Citrus Grove. It was an unusually happy occasion because it was the first time Mrs. R. L. Corporon had entertained the circle in her recently completed home. Mrs. Corporon occupies a very special and warm place in the hearts of the members of the W. O. C. because of her loving and unselfish years of dedicated service to the Presbyterian Church. So each member of the group enjoyed in sharing with Mrs. Corporon her pride in the quiet beauty and dignity of her new home. The meeting opened promptly as scheduled with Mrs. Fred Law presiding as moderator of the day’s discussion and Bible study, giving a summary of the forthcoming year’s study of the Book of Psalms and emphasizing the importance and beauty of the lesser known and familiar Psalms, as well as those Psalms which are loved by all. Mrs. Dean Merck handled in her usual capable and interesting way the program on Christian Worship, stressing worship, service and study. Much time was given in the meeting to the planning of the different phases of the year’s work with regard to its aims and objectives. A review was made of the duties of the newly appointed and elected officers, chairmen and various committees. The duties of the hostess, Mrs. Corporon, during the social hour which followed the business meeting, were charmingly assumed by Mrs. Russell Corporon, the youngest of the circle and Mrs. Robert Keszler. Those present included Mesdames U. S. McMillan, J. M. Merck, Ellen Franzen, C. J. Williams, John Merck, Sr., Russell Corporon, A. A. Penland, E. A. Mixon, Fred Law, P. V. Corporon, Dean Merck, Gerald Wells and visitor Mrs. Robert Kezsler.

Edward H. Smith, senior student at the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, October 27. Mr. Smith received his bachelor of arts degree in international relations from Southwestern at Memphis, Tennessee. Before entering the Seminary, he was employed as an engineer draftsman in Forrest City, Arkansas, and as a personnel supervisor in Memphis. He also served four years in the U. S. Army in Korea, Okinawa, and in the United States. He has his church membership in the Brooks Road Presbyterian Church in Memphis.

James Edward Foster, senior student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, November 10. Mr. Foster attended Odessa College and received his bachelor of arts degree from Austin College in Sherman in 1961. He was a member of Eta Sigma Phi, national honorary classical languages fraternity, and the baseball team. He is in the Marine Corps Reserve, and spent a year in active service before entering the Seminary. Mr. Foster has, for the past two summers, done field work at the St. Stephen and Ridglea Presbyterian Churches in Fort Worth. His church membership is in the First Presbyterian Church of Odessa.

Frederick Lindsay Moffett, senior student at the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, will be guest pastor at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, November 24. Mr. Moffett was graduated from Charles H. Milby High School in Houston, and received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Texas in 1961. He is married to the former Martha Lynn Welch of Houston; they have two children. Mr. Moffett is a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Houston.

The Presbyterian Women of the Church met Thursday, Nov. 14, in the bay front home of Mrs. John Merck, Jr. A home where the spacious rooms are so richly decorated with heritage pieces of needlepoint. A study of the prescribed Psalm had been prepared for study and discussion and was moderated by Mrs. Fred Law. Much stress was placed on the structure and rhythm of the Psalms in relation to their place in the present day hymns, and the place they occupied in the lives and destiny of the ancient Hebrews. The Emphasis for November was upon Stewardship and was represented by Mrs. John Merck, Sr. Those who served with her on this program emphasized the importance of the woman as stewardess of the home, money, time, talents and the gospel. Following the business meeting, coffee and sweets were served. During the coffee hours, Terry Lyn, the lovely infant daughter of the Gus Franzens, was presented the circle and duly admired. Among those present were: Mesdames Fred Law, U. S. McMillan, Ellen Franzen, Roy Nelson, P. V. Corporon, Dean Merck, Russell Corporon, Gustave Franzen, John M. Merck, Duane Corporon, George Hejtmanek, Gene Mixon, Charlie Williams, R. L. Wells and Gerald Wells.

Dan Terrell Hughs, second-year student at the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, will be guest at the Collegeport Presbyterian Church on Sunday, December 8. Hughs received his bachelor of science and bachelor of architecture degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1953, and worked as an architect in Dallas before coming to the Seminary. He was also architectural consultant for the Highland Park Presbyterian Church of Dallas, of which he is a member.

The Carl Ackermans spent Thanksgiving weekend in Baytown with the Woosters. On the sick list this past week were Stanley Wright and Dorothy Bullington. Glad to report that both are home and doing okay. Mrs. Pat Jenkins and son, Harold, spent last Wednesday in Rockport with Pat Jr. and family. Harold leaves for the U. S. Army December 12. Our deepest sympathy to the Fred Roesler family as Mr. Roesler's mother passed away Nov 22. Funeral services were held Nov. 24 in Houston. Visiting the L. C. Smiths this week end were their son and family of Cleveland. Mrs. Francis Rapstain has returned home after spending a week in Waller with her father, who is ill. Chili Saunders returned to Houston as he was to enter a hospital there this past week. We wish him a speedy recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ware had all their children home for Thanksgiving including Mrs. Ann Dunn and son of San Antonio, Mr. and Mrs. James Slone and children of Cuero, Sharon and Dugger Ware of Del Rio. Mr. and Mrs. Stanford Ward and sons of Houston spent the past week end with the Fred Roeslers. Jack Bullington, deer hunting for the first time with his sister, Mrs. Ruby Brown on lease near Uvalde, bagged an eight point buck.

Spending the winter with the R. L. Corporons are Mr. and Mrs. Herb Crane of Baraboo, Wisconsin. Mr. Crane is Mrs. Corporon’s brother. On Sunday they visited their children, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Keszler and children of Olivia, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Corporon and family of Point Comfort. A pre-Christmas “get together” was held at the home of Mrs. Gus Franzen Sr. on Saturday, Dec. 14. There were about 15 people present. The out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Bryan of Lafayette, Louisiana. Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Franzen Jr. and children, G. W. and Derril were dinner guests of Mrs. Franzen’s mother, Mrs. C.H. Wilson of Deutschburg, Sunday. Our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Francis Rapstain whose father passed away Saturday after a lengthy illness. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Fitzpatrick and children of Victoria visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Wells and Lynda. Last week’s guests in the First Presbyterian Church were Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Rusk and children, Tani Angelo and A. P. Zylstra of the Austin Presbyterian Seminary. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ware visited their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. James Slone and family of Cuero this past week. Harold Jenkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins, left for the Army this past week and is now stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Mr. and Mrs. Gail Leftwich of South Houston were here visiting her parents, the Jack Bullingtons, over the weekend. Ted Dessler of El Campo and Dan Williams of Pasadena were down for the weekend doing a little grouse hunting and fishing. Neither reported much luck. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Slaughter of Bay City were visiting friends on Monday afternoon in Collegeport. “Chili” Saunders and “Unk” Ellis of Houston were at Oyster Lake doing a little fishing with fair luck.

New Year’s Day the annual Covered Dish Dinner will be held at the Mopac at 12 noon. Everyone is invited to attend. We wish a speedy recovery to Mrs. Hattie Kundinger, who is in the Nightingale Hospital in El Campo, and Stanley Wright, a patient in Wagner General. Mr. and Mrs. Dee Williams and son of Orville, Calif. are spending the holidays here with friends and relatives. Mrs. Lyn Bullington Leftwich was honored with a miscellaneous bridal shower Saturday, December 14 at the Mopac. She was the recipient of many lovely and useful gifts. Coffee, punch and cake were served to the 25 guests attending. Harold Jenkins, who is stationed at Fort Polk, La., is spending the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jenkins. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year is wished for each and everyone.

Thursday, December 12, the Presbyterian Women of the Church of Collegeport held its Christmas covered dish party at the U. S. McMillan home at Tip Top with Mrs. McMillan as hostess. In the front parlor, a Christmas tree heavily flocked in white with myriads of glittering ornaments in pink and gold set the decorative color scheme used throughout the house. Around 11 o’clock in the morning, the guests, some wearing gay Christmas dresses of red, began arriving laden with festive, seasonal dishes of roast turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, various vegetables, salads, pies and cakes of many flavors and hues. The recent, tragic national events pointed up the study and discussion of the 20th, 45th, 72nd and 110th Psalm and ran like a blood stained ribbon of silver through the entire study session, and led to a unanimous resolution expressing deep sorrow and concern over the assassination of the President of the U. S., and a renewed dedication of the circle members to the destruction and outlawing of anything in daily life unlike the love which as Christians we profess. Mrs. Fred Law, as moderator, has aroused in the members an increasing awareness in the history and poetry of the Psalms as related to the songs used in the Presbyterian Hymnal. In repetition of last year’s project, a huge Christmas Post Card, executed and detailed by a talented young member of the church, has been placed in the foyer of the church as a receptacle to receive the money which otherwise would be spent in the exchange of Christmas cards among the members. The proceeds from this one joy Christmas card will be used for ministerial relief. The participation in the discussion by two visitors, Mrs. Carl Hansen and Mrs. Herbie Crane, were sparks which lent added and vivid brightness and spontaneity to the study. Singing of well loved Christmas carols brought to a close the day’s festivities and signed “Finis” to the meetings for 1963. Among those present were Mesdames Hattie Kundinger, Gerald Wells, Duane Corporon, George Hejtmanek, Bruce Kay, Gustave Franzen, Dean Merck, Fred Law, P. V. Corporon, Roy Nelson, Ellen Franzen, A. A. Penland, John Merck, John Merck, Jr., Russell Corporon, Bob Wells, R. L. Corporon and visitors, Mrs. Hansen, Mrs. Crane and the small fry Mike Hazen, Lamar and Kenneth Kay and Terri Lyn Franzen.
