Mrs. R. L. Corporon was hostess to the members of the Collegeport Presbyterian Woman's Union Thursday, April 11, at 2 p. m. There were 12 members and one visitor present. The President, Mrs. Gustave Franzen, called the meeting to order. A devotional based on Mark 6:30-44 entitled What Shall We Do With the Multitudes? was presented by Mrs. John Merck, who also remembered in prayer the missionaries listed for the day in the Year Book of Prayer. Mrs. Fred Law led a vital Bible lesson, The Things Which are Caesar's from Jesus' Teachings on Citizenship by E. T. Thompson. The Christian citizen of today will exert every effort, by work and by deed, through all the means available to us, to lead our government on every level, city, state and nation, to eschew all policies which are unjust in themselves, or which tend toward world conflict; to adopt on the other hand those policies which promote the peace and welfare of mankind and which enable our nation to play its part in the establishment of God's reign among men. We will recognize that prayer is not enough and that good will likewise is not enough, that there is a demand also for action, action that may at times bring us into open conflict with the powers that be, whether these powers be an entrenched bureaucracy, or hidden economic interests, or an electorate too easily swayed by prejudice and emotion. We will attempt to follow in the footsteps of our Lord, at the cost of criticism, persecution, loss of our lives. We will render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and unto God that which is God's. Mrs. Dean Merck introduced the program featuring Christ's Way Every Day---In Any Church. Various members participated on the program. A brief business meeting was held. The secretary, Mrs. P. V. Corporon, called the roll and read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved. A birthday card was signed and sent to Mrs. Rena Wright, who observed her 90th birthday April 14. A small gold cross pin was included with the card and given to Mrs. Wright as a token of appreciation of her many years of past service in the Woman's Union. A get well card was signed and sent to Mrs. W. L. Ellis. Plans were discussed for the Easter Sunrise Services to be held on the bayfront Easter morning, and also for the breakfast at the Mopac following the services. The hostess served angel food cake, banana nut cake, salted nuts, Easter egg candies, mints, coffee and cold drinks to the following: Mesdames P. V. Corporon, Duane Corporon and Carolyn, Gustave Franzen, Lawrence Hill, Fred Law, Dean Merck, John Merck, John Merck Jr. and Deborah, E. A. Mixon, Roy Nelson, Gerald Wells and C. J. The Collegeport Presbyterian women held their monthly meeting Thursday afternoon, May 16, in the lovely home of Mr. and Mr. W. L. Ellis on the Tres Palacios River. The meeting was called to order by the vice-president, Mrs. Dean Merck. Mrs. E. A. Mixon led the devotional and the prayer for the mission workers in Korea and Japan. Mrs. Fred Law led an interesting discussion on “Plenty and Want” from “Jesus Teachings on Citizenship” by Ernest Trice Thompson. “…And all these things shall be yours as well.” What things? Food, drink, clothing, shelter—the necessities of life, that is obvious. But to whom is the promise given? It is generally assumed that the promise is given to each of us individuals. But the Greek makes it clear, as the English does not, that Jesus was speaking to his disciples as a whole.” “If you followers of mine,” said Jesus, “will seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, then all the things which you need will be yours as well.” Mrs. Dean Merck said, ”This is a meeting giving older women opportunity to tell what the Christian Faith and membership of the Church means to them. It also gives an opportunity to honor them for their past service, and to express gratitude for their present help.” After Mrs. Law read Philippians 4:4-9, the older women in the group gave testimonies in terms of their own experiences, observations and faith. Mrs. Merck continued, “I can think of no greater honor than for the daughters of the mothers to be honored to present the gold crosses for their many years of faithful service and attendance in the Woman’s Union.” Mrs. W. L. Ellis pinned the gold cross on her mother, Mrs. Roy Nelson who served for 18 years as Social Chairman and about as many on Overseas Sewing. Mrs. Dean Merck pinned cross on her mother, Mrs. Gust Franzen, Sr., who retired this year as treasurer after many years of active service. Mrs. R. L. Corporon gave a prayer of gratitude for the important service of the older members and a prayer of dedication for all. The members expressed their gratitude for the wonderful influence these mothers have had in the church and community. During the business session 14 members answered to roll call. They voted to send money to purchase sheets for the mission in Africa. Plans were made to get the manse ready for the student minister—Mr. Donald Scruggs—who will fill the pulpit this summer, beginning May 26. The meeting closed with Mizpah. Mrs. Ellis served strawberry shortcake, chippers, tea and coffee to the following: Mesdames P. V. Corporon, R. L. Corporon, Gust Franzen, Sr., Fred Law, Dean Merck, John Merck, E. A. Mixon, Mae Perciville, Sr., Pat Richman, Jr., and Priscilla, Clyde Ware, R. L. Wells, C. J. Williams and little Miss Babette Franzen who is visiting her aunt, Mrs. Dean Merck. Monday morning without any fanfare, Byron King slipped over to Collegeport Cove, and in a short time came back with one flounder, two reds, several sheepshead and trout. Later in the afternoon he and his “partner in crime” J. A. Partain went to the same spot, but had very little luck, It was amazing but there was no big red fish story from Partain this trip. * * * * * Wednesday morning was the Patton’s day. J. W. Patton of Houston and his son, J. A. Patton of San Antonio brought in 70 trout, averaging one and one half pounds each, as some went over two pounds—and all these from Collegeport Cove. Sometime ago a party from Collegeport read about the big catches taken at Collegeport Cove and phoned to ask where it was. They said they had lived in Collegeport over 20 years and never heard of the place. Probably to many this location is familiarly known as Pinkertons’ [Pilkington] Slough or Slough Ranch Cove. No matter what one names it, it is a mighty good fishing spot most of the year.

Collegeport News COLLEGEPORT--A ceramic train, with its cars filled with miniature packages of "faith, hope and love" was the center of attraction on the gift table at a recent shower honoring Mrs. Jack Perciville, the former Miss Lucille Moore of Bay City, when Mrs. W. L. Ellis entertained for her in her home on the Tres Palacios River. Mrs. P. V. Corporon introduced the honoree and extended a warm welcome to her as a new member in our community.
