RESOLUTION

The One-Hundredth Anniversary of the Founding of Collegeport, the 'Town of Opportunity'


WHEREAS, the town of Collegeport was founded on May 25, 1908 soon after Jonathan Edwards Pierce and Abel Brown Pierce hired Burton D. Hurd Land Company to sell 9,000 acres of their ranchlands in an agreement that called for the construction of a college and a port on the Trespalacios Bay; and
 
WHEREAS, the Grand Opening of Collegeport was held on May 25, 1909 at the Hotel Collegeport; the town drew its name from the port and college built in 1909 named Gulf Coast University of Industrial Arts; and
 
 WHEREAS, the original First Church, Federated of Collegeport, was organized on November 30, 1909; made up of 14 denominations, the Church facilitated a close-knit community that worked together to serve their common interests and values; and
 
 WHEREAS, in 1912 Collegeport boasted a population of 496 and the county's first free public library; serviced by the Missouri Pacific (Mopac) Railroad, the town became a stop on the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway in 1911; now therefore, be it
 
 RESOLVED, that on this day May 31, 2008 we celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of Collegeport; and that we continue to hold up Collegeport as an example for the rugged, industrious dreamer, and that we will carry on the belief that hard work begets opportunity.
