The 85th anniversary of the founding of Collegeport will be celebrated this Saturday (May 29) with the annual Collegeport Day gathering sponsored by the Woman's Club.
The event will include a BBQ dinner served at the Mopac House starting 12 noon. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish item. Attendees are also invited to visit the new Collegeport Post Office between 7 a.m. - 12 noon.
Collegeport was founded by the Burton D. Hurd Land company on May 25, 1908. The grand opening of Collegeport was held May 25, 1909 in Hotel Collegeport, a two-story hotel accommodating a hundred guests and situated on the north side of Central Street.

Special guests and special recognition were given to several individuals who attended the 85th Collegeport Day activities last Saturday. Two such individuals were former longtime Matagorda County Extension agents Dr. John Hutchinson and Alma Stewart Hale. Dr. Hutchinson served as the county agricultural extension agent and organized Matagorda County's first livestock show. Alma Stewart Hale served as the county's home demonstration agent from 1937-48 and also organized the Turtle Bay Home Extension Club. Pictured left to right are Margaret Ann Hodge, Dr. and Mrs. John Hutchinson, Ida Mae Franzen, Alma Stewart Hale, Mary Belle Ingram, Phyllis Holsworth Derrick and Jean Richardson. Mrs. Derrick presented a volume of "Oral Memories of Alma Stewart Hale" to Ida Mae Franzen of the Woman's Club for placement in the Collegeport Library and to Mary Belle Ingram for the Matagorda County Museum. Two other books were also presented to the Collegeport Library. Mrs. Richardson presented a copy of "Roses On My Shoulders and Other Memories" written by her grandmother, Marjorie Bruce Wilkinson. Percy Corporon presented a copy of his book, "Tails of a Poor Fat Boy."
