Dean and Dorothy Merck honored at Collegeport Homecoming

 

A special presentation to one of Collegeport's more dedicated couples highlighted this year's Collegeport Homecoming Celebration on May 30 at Mopac House.

 

Dean and Dorothy Merck were presented with an award from the Woman's Club in recognition of the years of dedicated service they had made to the community. They received a plaque and Mrs. Merck received a scroll personalized with her name. Thomas Holsworth made the presentation.

 

Gus Franzen assisted Ida Mae Franzen, Woman's Club president, in giving inscribed mugs to the following persons:

 

--Harry Smith, 89, of Bay City, the oldest person in attendance.

--Lindsey Corporon, 3 months, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Corporon of Collegeport, the youngest person.

--Mr. and Mrs. P. V. Corporon of Citrus grove, couple married the longest, 65 years.

--David and Dawn Coe of Vienna, Va. traveled the farthest, 1,800 miles.

 

The meat for the barbecue was donated by Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Bryan, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Corporon, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Corporon, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis and Mrs. Roy Williams. Flora McMillan made the barbecue sauce.

 

The Collegeport Volunteer Fire Department was in charge of the barbecuing, with Russell Corporon as chairman of the Barbecuing Committee.

 

Billy Boeker of Bay City was in charge of the public address system and Pat and Cheryl Hickl provided the tent.

 

The Woman's Club, organized in 1910 as a civic organization, has sponsored Collegeport Day Celebration since its start 79 years ago.

 

Special Award - Dorothy and Dean Merck display the plaque that was presented to them during the 7th annual Collegeport Homecoming Celebration held May 30 at the Mopac House. The Woman's Club recognized them for their years of dedicated service to the community.

Former residents return for Collegeport Day

 

Approximately 275 people attended the 79th Annual Collegeport Homecoming celebration held Saturday at the Mopac in Collegeport.

 

The Woman's Club was organized in 1910 as a civic organization and sponsors Collegeport Day celebrations.

 

Dean Merck gave a welcome to the crowd assembled. Gus Franzen gave the invocation and assisted Ida Mae Franzen, woman's club president, in giving inscribed mugs (a gift of the Woman's Club) to the following recipients:

 

The oldest person: Harry Smith of Bay City, 89.

The youngest person: Lindsay Corporon, 3-month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Corporon.

The couple married the longest: Mr. and Mrs. P. V. Corporon of Citrus Grove, married 65 years.

Farthest traveled: David and Dawn Coe of Vienna, Virginia, 1800 miles.

 

A special award plaque was presented to Dean and Dorothy Merck from the Woman's Club in recognition of many years of dedicated service to their community. Dorothy also received a scroll personalized with her name and written by a friend. Thomas Holsworth made the presentation.

 

"The Woman's Club appreciated the support of the Mopac House Foundation and the Volunteer Fire Department for the love and hard work rendered to make this event a success," said club president Ida Mae Franzen.

 

"We want to give special thanks to Billy Boeker for setting up a public address system, and to Pat and Cheryl Hickl for providing a nice tent," Mrs. Franzen added. "Above all, thanks to the good Lord for providing a beautiful day for the occasion."

 

The club extended heartfelt thanks to all the people who each year have supported the club with donations and gifts.

 

The meat was donated by Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Bryan, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Corporon, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Corporon, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis and Mrs. Roy Williams. Flora McMillan made and donated the barbecue sauce. The Collegeport Volunteer Fire Department was in charge of the barbecuing with Russell Corporon, chairman of the barbecue committee. Everyone brought covered dishes to accompany the barbeque.
