Collegeport Day

1976

Homecoming Saturday

Collegeport will observe its 68th Annual Homecoming Saturday, May 29th. Join our neighbors to the east in this day of fun, renewing old acquaintances and meeting new arrivals, talking over the good old days as well as the happenings of the present.

This annual event is sponsored by the Collegeport Woman's Club, which was organized May 19, 1910, with the cooperation of all the people of the community and is held at the Mopac House, the old Missouri Pacific Station that was attached to the library in 1935. Opening day at the Mopac House was May 4, 1935.

Collegeport boasts of the first Free Public Library in Matagorda County, but it wasn't until 1923 that the Woman's Club had a permanent library building when the club purchased the J. H. Adams house for $50 and members of the Industrial League moved the building to the present site, approximately where the Gulf Coast University of Industrial Arts was located.

A covered dish dinner will be served at noon. The meat, coffee and tea will be furnished. You are asked to bring a dish that goes good with barbecue.

Special guests at this year's celebration will be members of the Matagorda County Historical Society and Survey Committee.

Copies of their newspaper, the Collegeport Chronicle, also the Collegeport Hotel register and pictures will be displayed in the library.

Collegeport was founded by the Burton D. Hurd Land Company on May 25, 1908, at which time a tract of land was deeded to W. A. Travis for the building of a college of Industrial Arts and Sciences.

Collegeport Day was observed on the 25th of May for more than half a century but a few years ago the date was changed to the last Saturday in May so that persons living away or those who worked could attend.

Collegeport Day

Collegeport Day, a celebration looked forward to each year by residents, former residents and friends, was the highlight of this Bicentennial year for this community.

More than 270 people registered at the 68th anniversary celebration of the founding of Collegeport on May 25, 1908.

The Bicentennial theme was carried out with the American and Bicentennial flags flying over the sign "Mopac House, Collegeport Day, May 29, 1976". At the registration table, covered with a red cloth, guests were given name tags decorated with red, white and blue ribbons with Collegeport 1908-1976 inscribed in red.

George Washington's portrait and the American flag were displayed in the dining hall. The serving tables had red, white and blue streamers down the center, also miniature flags.

One large table held the large Bicentennial cake with candles, displayed by the Matagorda County Federation, of which the Collegeport Club was a charter member.

Mason Holsworth was master of ceremonies. Mrs. L. C. Smith, club president, welcomed the guests and the Rev. Bill Hodge of Katy gave the invocation. The Matagorda County Historical Society and Survey Committee guests were recognized.

The highlight of the day was the presentation of orchid corsages to Mrs. L. C. Smith, who retired as postmaster on May 28; Mrs. W. L. Ellis and Mrs. Sewell Lawson, who retired as teachers at the end of the 1976 school year; and Mrs. T. Sirmon, mother of Mrs. M. S. Holsworth, oldest guest.

In behalf of the Woman’s Club, former club president, Mrs. Fred Law, presented Mrs. L. C. Smith a plaque inscribed "Presented to Mrs. L. C. Smith in loving appreciation for 21 years as postmaster and for faithful service to the community, by the Woman's Club, May 29, 1976.”

All who attended enjoyed the delicious barbecue furnished by the Holsworth family and all the many covered dishes the guests brought. The men of the community are to be commended for the good barbecuing job and the women for helping in the kitchen and dining room.

Many interesting pictures and historical items were displayed in the library.

Those who traveled more than 100 miles to join their families and friends for this memorial day were: Jessie Merck Kilpatrick, Bessie Merck Wilson of Dallas; Theora Merck McRee, Elve Merck Martin, Mr. and Mrs. M. Jack Martin, Mrs. Alva Burleson and Karen Kay, Mrs. T. Sirmon, Mrs. Mildred Franzen Russell, Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Bryan, Jr. and son of Houston; Mr. and Mrs. Dale Welsby of San Antonio; Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Derrick and family, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Dowdle of Waco; Rev. and Mrs. Hodge and family of Katy; Mrs. Louise Walter Waters, Mrs. Roberta Liggett Boyd of Corpus Christi; Mr. and Mrs. Teddy Pennington of Texas City.

So eager were people for another homecoming that several offers were made to furnish meat for the celebration which will be held the last Saturday in May, 1977.
