Collegeport, Texas, May 26—This is the day of the celebration of the eighth year of the establishment of the town of Collegeport. It is an annual event and was celebrated in the usual manner with water and land games, speaking, community dinner or picnic. The speakers were Thomas H. Lewis of Bay City and H. A. Clapp of the Texas Industrial Congress. In the evening a dance was given in the pavilion.
In the evening the Collegeport Industrial League held its regular semi-monthly meeting with a good attendance. Money was appropriated for the purpose of building a community dipping vat which will be erected under the supervision of Dr. J. R. Reidy of the Houston office of the bureau of animal industry. A community steam pressure canner was also ordered. Steps were taken towards providing the town new banking facilities; new members were added.
Crops in this portion of Matagorda County are some backward, but in most places are doing well. About 300 acres of cotton planted most of which has been chopped. Liberal planting of sweet potatoes, peanuts, peas and sorghum assure plenty of feed for local purposes.
Eight of Collegeport boys are already in the country service in its different branches and the Home Guards number twenty-five and drill twice each week.
