W. D. Rondthaler Is Suicide Victim,
Today W. D. Rondthaler, age 59 years, killed himself this morning about 4:30 o’clock about one mile east of Van Vleck on the Houston highway. A forty-five caliber pistol lay near his hand, under his crumpled body, in his Buick roadster which he had driven just off the pavement. One shell had snapped but the man, so intent on taking his life, pulled the trigger again and this time the gun did not fail his command. The large caliber lead bullet entered the right side of his head about an inch and a half above his ear and came out the other side of his head almost exactly the same distance above the left ear. The bullet was lodged in the side of his car. The body was found lying in the seat of the car with his head on the right side of the seat and his body under the driver’s seat. His personal belongings were found intact. No reason for his motive was discovered, no note or indication of his contemplating taking his life was found. He had packed his suitcase and had made his final preparations to leave for San Antonio. He appeared in good spirits according to his many friends who saw him on his departure. He left Bay City last night in his automobile but according to Dr. E. E. Scott when the body was examined today, he had not been over three hours. The body was examined about eight o’clock which made the time of the suicide bout 4:30 or 5:00 this morning. Mr. Rondthaler had been a resident of the city for eight years. He came here and was employed in the Herder Rice Mill for several years. He ran the Gulf Filling Station west of the post office for several months and then resumed his job as bookkeeper for the Herder Rice Mill which position he held until the disastrous fire of last winter which deprived him as well as many others of a job. He made an unsuccessful race for the office of district clerk. Following his defeat he sold his personal belongings from his apartment in the A. J. Hardy apartment garage and prepared to leave. At the time of his departure it was rumored that he had accepted an offer for a position in Boston which would pay him $6000 annually. To some of his close friends he remarked that it was hopeless to think of the job as he believed that his eyes were going back on him. He was a Shriner, a college graduate, a major in the World War. He is survived by three sisters and two brothers, according to his friends, none of whom were located at this writing and funeral arrangements are pending. Taylor Bros. are in charge. Mr. Rondthaler was very reticent about his personal life but his closest friends felt a degree of sorrow in his life at times. Those who knew him well knew him as a man of wealth and position at one time. He told this writer that a fire had wiped him out at one time. This was told this writer on the morning of the Herder Rice Mill fire. Daily Tribune, June 1, 1934 W. D. Rondthaler Is Buried Here W. D. Rondthaler, age 58 years, 4 months, who took his own life Thursday morning early one mile east of Van Vleck, was laid to rest today at 10’oclock in Cedarvale Cemetery. Rev. Paul Engle conducted the services at the home of Mr. P. G. Huston. The Masonic order conducted services at the grave. Taylor Bros. morticians were in charge of the arrangements. Arrangements were made by a sister in Chicago of the deceased through a wire to Taylor Bros., after she was apprised of the unhappy occurrence. “Rondy,” as everyone, young to old, knew this happy go lucky individual, was laid to rest this morning with a large gathering of sorrowing friends present. He was truly a gentleman and a scholar, a man who made friends and kept them. He never bothered anyone, even his closest friends with any of his troubles and not even his closest friends believed he had any. There are many sorrowing friends to mourn the life of this man. Pallbearers were R. Lee Williams of Eagle Lake, C. G. Potter, E. W. Willenberg, Henry LeTulle, Dr. E. E. Scott and Esker McDonald of Bay City.
