On Dec. 11 at 8:35 p. m., Matthews Patterson crossed “The Bar.” As the last lingering rays of a radiant day faded into the darkness of night, the spirit of this beautiful quiet Christian life took its flight to the heavenly home.

Mr. Patterson was 64 years, 7 months and 17 days old. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Ethel Kelly and Mrs. Lela Finch, Newgulf; Mrs. Hattie Page of Guff, and Mrs. Pearl Cartwright of Beeville, Texas. Two sons, Frank Patterson of Flagstaff Ariz., and Henry Allen Patterson of Gulf, Texas.

On Dec. 13, at 3 p. m. the services were held from the First Baptist Church at Bay City, Texas, with the following ministers, former pastors in charge, Rev. J. L. Eddings, Bellville, Texas; Rev. L. R. Byrd, Ganado, Texas; Rev. M. R. Soileau and Rev. Odis Rainer. A large concourse of friends attended the services. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful attesting the fact that his life had been a benediction to those he had touched. His body was laid to rest in Cedarvale Cemetery by the side of his companion, who preceded him only a few years ago.

During Mr. Patterson’s long illness he often spoke of his heavenly home. His going might be fitly expressed in the words of Alfred Tennyson,

“Crossing the Bar.”
Sunset and evening star
And one clear call for me;
And may there be no
Moaning at the bar
When I put out to sea.
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound or foam.
When that which drew from out the boundless deep,
Turns again, home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark
And may there be no sadness of farewell
When I embark.
For though from out the bourne of time and space
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to meet my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.”

The sad news of the death of Miss Ethel A. Ryman, the 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ryman, reached the friends and acquaintances of the family at an early hour this morning, Miss Ethel passing at 1:20 a. m. after an illness of sometime.

Miss Ethel, several weeks ago became afflicted with a bad tooth, which became abscessed, growing worse all the time, finally involving the entire jaw. Everything possible was done for her, but she could not get any relief.

Decedent was a bright young miss and made a good record in the high school. She had many friends amongst her school-mates who are deeply grieved over her untimely death.

The funeral took place this afternoon at 4 o’clock at the cemetery, under the direction of her pastor, Rev. Gilliam, of the Baptist Church.

The Tribune extends its deepest sympathy to the grief-stricken father and mother.
