Henrietta Schaedel
Henriette Schaedel Mrs. Henriette Schaedel, wife of Mr. Theodore Schaedel, a prominent citizen of this city, died in a sanatorium at Houston Friday night after a brief illness and was buried in the Bay City cemetery this morning at nine o’clock, the Rev. A. A. Kidd of the Methodist church officiating. Mrs. Schaedel was one of the best loved women, a consecrated Christian, a loving mother and wife. She numbered her friends by her acquaintances and the gloom her sad demise has caused has spread to every heart where her virtues and splendid characteristics were known. Decedent would have been 50 years of age on the 29th day of this month. She was born in Pineville, La., and in 1881 was married at that pace to Theodore Schaedel. To this union there were born eight children, all of whom survive her. The children are Mrs. W. S. Falery of San Benito, Texas, Chas. T. of this city, J. M., Mrs. G. M. Tarnellhill of Urania, La., Maymie, Bessie, Emma and Frank, all of Bay City. Mr. and Mrs. Schaedel moved to Bay City in 1901, but had previously lived in the county some years. The funeral this morning was impressive and attended by a large following of sorrowing and sympathetic friends. The Tribune extends to the bereaved husband and family its deepest sympathy in this their darkest hour of distress. Matagorda County Tribune, September 20, 1912

Evan Watkins Frances Watkins Evan Watkins Evan Watkins was born August second, 1870. The first son of Irene Clementine McGehee and Samuel Watkins who came to Texas in 1832. His parents being among the first settlers in Matagorda County. His boyhood days were spent riding the range in typical cowboy style. With his father and brothers he engaged in raising and trading cattle, horses, and hogs, when the settling of this county was in its infancy. On January thirty-first 1893 he was united in marriage with Frances Isabel Harris, third daughter of Thomas J. Harris, joining two of the original Texas pioneering families, as the Harris Brothers were among the first to have freight and cotton on the “Old Spanish Trail.” Together Evan and Frances began their fifty-one years of married life in an almost isolated district known as “Up on Blue Creek,” in the days when Bay City had not even been dreamed of and the place where this thriving little city now stands was bald prairie. For a number of years this young couple made a trip by wagon and four mule team only once in six months for groceries and the mail, to Hawley, on Palacios Creek. The deceased is survived by his widow, Frances Harris Watkins, two daughters, Mrs. Grover C. Horn of Bay City, Mrs. V. R. Baty of Newgulf; four sons, Charles Evan of Houston, Leslie Brooks of U. S. Navy, Dennis Irvin of Bay City, and Victor Neal of Newgulf. Seven grandchildren, and one greatgrandson.

Samuel Watkins
October 15, 1836 – August 10, 1916
Samuel Watkins, Sr., one of the oldest citizens of this county, died at his home in this city at 10:15 PM yesterday and was buried in Cedarvale Cemetery this afternoon.
Decedent, a Confederate veteran, was 79 years, 9 months and 25 days old, and leaves a large family and connection.
The Tribune will have a more detailed account of Mr. Watkins’ life in a later issue of the paper.
Matagorda County Tribune, August 18, 1916 Death of Samuel Watkins, Sr. Died at his home in the southern part of Bay City, Thursday night at 10:15, Samuel Watkins, Sr., aged nearly eighty years. Samuel Watkins was born in Ashville, Alabama, October 14, 1836, and with his father came to Texas in 1859, settling at Matagorda; just in time to get settled, and Samuel entered the Confederate army and fought through, going out in the Pearson company, the first organized in this part of Texas. He married Miss I. C. McGehee in 1868, his wife surviving him, with four sons—Evie, Leander, Samuel and Philip who is in Missouri. One daughter died young. Surviving him also are two brothers, Jas. M. and R. B. Watkins, 15 grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces and their large families, with all of whom and particularly the loving companion of a half century we deeply sympathize in their bereavement. Mr. Watkins was for many years a member of the Baptist church, and his life was that of a consistent Christian. Mr. Watkins has been a useful citizen of this county for more than half a century, quiet, active, faithful. He never sought public office, but his counsel was sought for he was conservative and safe. Perhaps no man in this or any other county ever had more sincere admirers and loyal friends. His was a most lovable character, and end was every heart upon hearing of his death. A large concourse of sorrowing friends followed the remains to their last resting place in Cedarvale Cemetery yesterday afternoon.
