G. Weldon Bowers, 69, of Bay City, died at Methodist Hospital in Houston on June 11. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Matagorda County Farm Bureau and Matagorda County Farmers Co-op. Survivors include: Mrs. Mayme Frances Bowers of Bay City; daughter, Barbara Ann Bowers of Galveston; sister, Lillian Almon of Portland; brothers, Ray and Verner of Palacios, Adrian of Baytown and Richard of Alpine. The funeral will be held at the First United Methodist Church on June 13 at 3 p. m. with the Rev. S. Merle Waters officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Mayme Frances “Tommy” Bowers

“Tommy” Bowers, 77, of Bay City, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2002 in Hitchcock, Texas. She was born October 3, 1924 in Mishawaka, Ind. to Charles H. and June Belle Warner Thompson.

She was a Bay City resident since 1984, a member of First United Methodist Church and was a Registered Nurse.

She retired from Matagorda General Hospital as a nursing supervisor.

She is survived by: her daughter, Barbara A. Bowers of Hitchcock; sisters and brothers-in-law, Opal Atwood, Muncie, Ind., Dotty Dinkins and husband Paul of Columbus, Ind., and Evelyn Cue and husband Dale of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and by her brothers, Charles E. Thompson of Leesburg, Ind.

Delma “Buddy” Barrett

Funeral services for Buddy Barrett, 52, of Bay City will be held at 5 p. m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Bay City with Hollie Briscoe officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mr. Barrett was born Feb. 21, 1934, in Conroe to Delma and Jean Brumley Barrett and died July 22, 1986, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.

A longtime resident of Bay City, he graduated from Bay City High School in 1953. He made all-district for three years as halfback on the football team and played on the basketball and baseball teams.

Don Haley, former Bay City coach, praised him as “one of the greatest athletes to ever come out of Bay City High School.”

He was employed by Arthur Brothers for 14 years at Celanese Chemical Co., Bay City. He was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include his wife, Althea Barrett of Bay City; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Delma Barrett of Sugarland; two daughters, Debbie Sharer of Houston and Becky Cook of Bay City; a son, David Barrett, of Bay City, a brother, Malcom Barrett of Bay City; three sisters, Norman Jean Voitle and Barbara Ann Reznicek, both of Houston, and Sandy Frieda of New York; and two grandsons, Cody Cook and Lane Barrett, both of Bay City.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Althea Frances Barrett, 75, of Bay City passed away December 1, 2012. She was born May 29, 1937 in Rochester, MA to the late Frances Bradley & Hazel Swift Bradley. She graduated from Everett High School in Everett, MA in May 1956. On September 6, 1958 she married D. W. “Buddy” Barrett. She attended nursing school at Winthrop Community Hospital in Winthrop, MA and graduated as an LVN in March 1958. She worked with Dr. Fred Matthes for many years and following retirement found joy in working at Myra’s Garden. She enjoyed gardening, but most of all, spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Buddy Barrett, sisters Joyce Bradley & Rosemary Whalen, and brothers Jerry & Harvey Bradley. Survivors include mother-in-law Jean "Mom" Barrett; daughters Debbie Sharer & husband Tim of Friendswood and Becky Cook & husband Bubba of Bay City; son David Barrett & wife Donna of Bay City; sisters Blanche Ellis, Sarah Bergami, Ramona Berry & Susan Georgakopoulos; brothers Vernon Berry, Jimmy Bradley & David Bradley; grandchildren Cody Cook & wife Ashley, Lane Barrett & wife Julia, Casey Simmons & husband Wayne, Chad Barrett, Jessica Sharer and Katelyn Sharer and great granddaughter Kailyn Cook. Also among those she leaves behind are longtime family friend Kathy Abels and caregiver Mercedes Garcia.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5:30-7:30 PM Monday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Lane Pardue officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Cody Cook, Bubba Cook, Lane Barrett, Chad Barrett, Tim Sharer & Wayne Simmons. Bay City: Graveside services for former Bay City resident Ida Lee Bullock, 81, of The Woodlands, were to be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Cedarvale Cemetery with Bob Johnson of Montgomery County Church of Christ officiating.

A longtime resident of Bay City, Mrs. Bullock died Sunday, Aug. 24, 1997.

She was a former member of Sixth Street Church of Christ and worked several years at Bealls Department Store.

Mrs. Bullock was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Bullock, in 1969.

Survivors are a daughter, Carol Elizabeth Jones of The Woodlands; a daughter and son-in-law, Loyce Janette and James C. Culpepper of Houston; sisters, Hettie Thompson and Nettie Mae Mahew, both of Bay City, and Edna Hughes of Tomball; grandchildren, Richard O. Jones Jr. and William H. Jones, both of The Woodlands, and Cory Lynn Posell and Kimberly Ann Culpepper, both of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held for Oran Byrd, 48, at 2 p. m. today from the Bay City Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Huggins and Allen Brown officiating.

Interment was in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

The service was under the direction of Dick R. Elkins of Bay City Funeral Home.

A resident of Bay City, he died at his home on Saturday.

He was born Feb. 12, 1927 in Robertson County.

Survivors include his mother Mrs. Susie E. Byrd, Bay City; two sons, Oran Byrd Jr. and James Byrd 4th, of Houston; three brothers, Abe and J. C. Byrd of Bay City and Edgar Byrd of Bryan; six sisters, Mrs. Ada Hoover of Port Lavaca, Mrs. Ida Bullock, Mrs. Hettie Thompson, Mrs. Nettie Mayhew and Mrs. Hazel Holton of Bay City; and Mrs. Edna McDaniel of Monahans.

Dorothy L. Elkins

Dorothy Elkins

Graveside services for Dorothy Elkins, 65, of Sargent, were scheduled for 2 p. m. today at Cedarvale Cemetery with the Rev. David Duncan officiating.

Miss Elkins was born Jan. 25, 1926, to T. W. and Ina French Elkins in Houston and died Dec. 5, 1991, at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

She was a physical therapist for 32 years. She worked with polio patients and other children at the Children’s Center for Development Therapy. She was also a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Ted Elkins of El Paso and Tommy Elkins of Brazil; a niece, Robyn Smith of Victoria; and her dear friends, Gaye Warren and Marguerite Warren of Sargent.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her lifelong friend, Glenda Moore.

In lieu of flowers, Miss Elkins’ wish was for contributions to be given to the American Cancer Society or the Children’s Center for Developmental Therapy in Houston.

Services were under the direction of Dick R. Elkins of Bay City Funeral Home.

Diane Murray McKelvy, 47, of Houston died February 21, 2001 at Hospice at Texas Medical Center in Houston. She was born December 16, 1953 in El Campo, Texas to Faburn and Gloria Faye Wiginton Murray. Diane was a resident of Houston the past six months and a former longtime resident of Bay City, where she was a member of the First Baptist Church. She taught school at Bay City Junior High School for 25 years, and was a member of Bay City Junior Service League.

Survivors include: three daughters, Elizabeth Anne, Kathryn Diane and Laura Louise McKelvy, all of Houston; father and step-mother, Faburn and Dalinda Murray of Houston; brothers Douglas and Drew Murray both of Houston; step-brother, Cody Strnadel of Waller, Texas; step-sister, Mendi Strnadel of Houston; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her mother, Gloria Wiginton Murray.

Memorial Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 23, 2001, at the First Baptist Church in Bay City with the Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Interment was at Cedarvale Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Burt and Glenn Huebner, Bob and Robert Klepac, Kirk and Scott Wiginton, Dave Abshier and Doug Matthes. He was born July 27, 1952. He was employed in the rice industry and attended Southwestern University and the University of Texas.

Survivors: daughter, Kimberly Stockton; father and stepmother, Faburn M. and Dalinda Murray; stepsister, Mendi Strnadel; brother, Drew Murray; and stepbrother, Cody Strnadel.

Ms. Norris passed away February 15, 1998, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. She was born June 9, 1908 in Bastrop, Texas to John Albert and Mary Belle Cartwright James. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

 

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Gerry and Bobby McClure of Victoria; a son, Jan Norris of Bay City; four grandsons, Tommy Sedam, Jr. of Bay City, David Sedam of Corpus Christi, Jim Norris of Pennsylvania, and Hank Sedam of Houston; by two granddaughters, Leigh Ann Sedam of Austin, and Vickie Lynn Norris of San Antonio; two great grandsons, Erin and Ryan Sedam of Weatherford, Texas; sister-in-law, Ruth James of Houston; and a niece, Rebecca Gill of Hico, Texas.

A resident of Bay City since 1976, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Baptist church.

 

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, William A. A native of Bay City, he was born July 26, 1918, to the late Adolph G. and Laura Freeman Noster. A World War II veteran, he was a member of the Bay City Masonic Lodge No. 865 AF & AM and the Arabia Temple.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Duncan officiating.

Funeral services for William R. Reed Jr., 86, of New Gulf are set for 3 p. m. today at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Skip Holman officiating.

Mr. Reed was born July 11, 1906 in Bryan to W. R. Reed Sr. and Ada Conway Reed and he died March 16, 1993, at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton.

He was a member of New Gulf Baptist Church. He retired from Texas Gulf Sulphur after 42 years.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Reed of New Gulf; a son, William R. Reed of League City; three sisters, Ruth Cook of Rosenberg, Gertrude Vanerhider of Abilene and Iva Bowden of Corpus Christi; two brothers, Cecil Reed of West Columbia and Edward Reed of Lubbock; thre grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Henry Joe Schelsteder

Schelsteder, 69, was born in Page, Texas, on June 24, 1914. He was a resident of Bay City since 1965, and was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. He died Monday in Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Louise Schelsteder of the family home; one son, Mike Schelsteder of Bay City; two sisters, Minnie and Annie Schelsteder, both of Houston; and two brothers, Herman and Ernest Schelsteder, both of Houston.

Pallbearers will be Mike Murphree, Gary Krenek, Wilbert Foerster, Charles Gola, Earl Dibbern and Dewayne Dibbern. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Esther Louise Schelsteder, 87, of Angleton died November 1, 2005 at the Cypress Woods Care Center in Angleton. She was born May 2, 1918 in Page, TX to the late Herman and Frieda Forster Scheueler. She was a resident of Angleton the past 10 years and a former longtime resident of Bay City and a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. Survivors include: son & daughter-in-law: Michael and Karen Schelsteder of Bay City; 2 grandchildren: Alyssa and Michael Henry Schelsteder of Bay City. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry Joe Schelsteder; and brother: Freddie Scheueler. Graveside Funeral Service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, November 3, 2005 at Cedarvale Cemetery with Rev. ‘Father of Rodeo’ Dies in Bay City Home
G. W. Townsend Leaves Legacy Of Helping Area Youth

Well known Bay City businessman and past president of the Matagorda County Fair and Rodeo Association, George William Townsend, died Thursday evening in his residence.

Townsend, 70, was born in Grovetown and moved to Bay City in 1935 with Skelly Oil.

In 1945 he began his own business, Townsend Lease Service, and was in the oil field business until 1977. Following his retirement, he constructed and opened Cattlemen’s Motel which was followed by Cattlemen’s Restaurant.

He was a member of the Methodist Wesley Men’s Class, Rotary Club, past president of the Bay City Country Club and a director of Bay City Bank and Trust.

Along with his various interests, his main love was the ranching business and raising quarterhorses.

Townsend had been president of the Matagorda County Fair and Livestock Association for the past twenty-five years. During his presidency, the association saw the expansion and growth of the fair and livestock show. The new rodeo arena was dedicated on his behalf.

He believed that if the youth of the county were interested in the responsibility of raising animals, then they would be responsible in life.

Active in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, he served as a director on the Quarter Horse Committee over the years and in May of this year was appointed an honorary lifetime director of the Rodeo and Livestock Show.

Survivors include wife, Ann Townsend; children, Maxine Glover, Bonnie Gosling, William Townsend; mother, Mrs. Nola Townsend; brothers, Leslie Townsend, Ottis Townsend; grandchildren, George Glover, Gary Glover, Mrs. Cindy Harris, Mrs. Debbie Vaclavic, Mrs. Rebecca Brown of Dallas, William Allen Townsend Jr., Terry Townsend and Mrs. Cristyn Green; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held 2 p. m. Saturday at the First Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be sent in the form of donations to the building fund of the Matagorda County Livestock Association.

Pallbearers will be W. L. Rawlinson, Ricky Rawlinson, Danny Savage, Dickie Gerstenberger, Billy Mitchell of Rocksprings and Pedro Aguilar.

Honorary pallbearers include Earl Sirmon, Clyde Ashcraft, Gus Brown, Dr. C. E. Woodson, R. R. Williford, J. S. Williams, E. E. Johs, Hugh Hixon, John Mikstch, Bob Plummer, Bill Mithell, Hugh Strickland, William Popek, W. T. Lane, Thomas Edison, D. F. Wiginton Doug Le Mond, all officers and directors of the Bay City Bank and Trust, executive committee members of the Matagorda County Livestock Association and the Houston Livestock Show directors and executive committee.

Funeral services for Ann Marie Miksch Townsend, 63, will be held at 1:30 p. m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Sonnier officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Rosary will be said at 7:30 p. m. today at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Townsend was born July 15, 1925, in Holman, Texas, to Frank and Julie Heger Miksch and died July 7, 1989, in Matagorda General Hospital.

She was a member of the Catholic church and the Matagorda County Fair Association and was active in charity work in and around Bay City. She was also the owner of Victoria Investment Co. and owner-operator of Cattlemen’s Motel and Restaurant in Bay City.

Survivors include three step-children, Maxine Glover, Bonnie Gosling and William Townsend, all of Bay City; five sisters, Millie Kosler of Weimar, Rose Nelon of Las Vegas, Nev., Erma Beal of El Campo, Mildred Langston of Lubbock and Florence Payne of Victoria; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Gary Glover, John Payne, Hal Langston, Clyde Ashcraft, Kenneth Beal and Monica Joost. Honorary pallbearers will be Pinkie Brown, Thomas Edison, Earl Sirmon, J. C. Glover, Blanche Lane, Doug Lamont and friends and associates with whom she worked.

In lieu of usual remembrances, donations may be made to the Matagorda Conty Women’s Crisis Center or the charity of your choice.

Funeral services for Mr. Cecil Thomas Watkins, 65, of Boling were scheduled for 2 p. m. today at Newgulf Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Norton officiating. Interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mr. Watkins was born March 4, 1918 in Bay City and died Jan. 1, 1984 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton. He was retired from Texasgulf
Inc. and had lived in the Newgulf area for 40 years. Mrs. Watkins was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Oma Rodgers Watkins of Boling; daughter, Shirley Kathryn Bordelon of Shreveport, La.; four sons, Cecil Wayne Watkins of Jacksonville, Fla., Jerry Ross Watkins of Pecos, Texas, Lester Brent Watkins of Wharton and Pettus Lee Watkins of Needville; five sisters, Helen Bunk of Wadsworth, Lillian Coleman of Taft, Texas, Willie Belle Hudgins of Jones Creek, Bernice Slaughter of Wadsworth and Beatrice Ryman of Dickerson, Texas; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers include Leo Burns, N. S. “Son” Hersarling, Newman Bench, Bud Campbell, George Hevener, Charles Luco, John Thompson and Bill Morrison.

Oma Marie “Oma Lee” Watkins, 87, of Logansport, LA passed away Thursday, October 10, 2007 in Shreveport, LA. She was born September 16, 1920 in Forest, TX to the late Oscar Rodgers and Minnie Trammell Rodgers. Mrs. Watkins was a resident of Louisiana for the past 11 years, was a former resident of Wharton, TX, and worked many years as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She is survived by daughter: Kathryn Bordelon & husband Alphonse of Logansport, LA; 3 sons: Cecil Wayne Watkins & wife Shirley of Jacksonville, FL, Jerry Ross Watkins & wife Jackie of Mills, WY, and Brent Watkins & wife Yolanda of Wharton, TX; sister: Ruth Smith of West Columbia, TX; 11 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. Poplar Bluff—Pettus Lee Watkins, 43, of Poplar Bluff, died Monday, March 25, 2002.

He was born Aug. 2, 1958, in New Gulf, [to] Oma Marie Rogers Watkins of Logansport, La. and to the late Cecil Thomas [Watkins].

Survivors: daughter, Dana Watkins; son, Tommy Watkins; sister, Kathryn Bordelon of Logansport, La.; brother, Cecil Watkins of Jacksonville, Fla., Jerry Watkins of Casper Wyo.; and Brent Watkins of Wharton; and mother.

Terry Michael Williams of Port Lavaca, passed away on December 23, 2000. He was born on February 17, 1956, in Bay City to G. L. Williams and Wynona Davis Hutcherson.

He is survived by: wife, Lisa Shively Williams of Port Lavaca; parents, G. L. Williams of Port Lavaca and Wynona Davis Hutcherson of Bay City; stepmother, Virgie Williams of Port Lavaca; daughter, Jody Williams; sons, Tony Williams and Jake Williams all of Port Lavaca; and brother, Gordon Lee Williams, Jr. of Houston.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday December 29, 2000 at Richardson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Tim Brewer officiating. Williams, Wilburn David (Pete), 69, died at Port Lavaca Friday night. Funeral services at 3:00 PM Monday at the First Methodist Church of Bay City, with the Rev. Leslie LeGrand and the Rev. Conrad Winborn officiating. Burial will be in the Cedarvale Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

 

Survivors include: one son, Leland Williams of Port Lavaca; and, one sister, Mrs. Vida Martin of Houston. Pallbearers will be George Townsend, Ashley Etie, Steve Collida, Ernest Reiman, J. J. Spurgeon and Hurbert Gusman. Honorary pallbearers: Rowland Rugeley, Dick Bachman, employees of Rugeley Motor Co. and members of the Bay City Fire Department. Williams was a member of the fire department, First Methodist Church, and the Wesley Bible Class.
