Funeral services for Earl Wesley Smith, 65, of Bay City will be held 2 p. m. Sunday at First Pentecostal Church. Burial will be at Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mr. Earl Wesley Smith was born Jan. 10, 1924, in Texarkana, Arkansas, to George Robert and Vola Minnie Carter Smith and died Sept. 1, 1989, in Matagorda General Hospital.

He was a resident of Bay City since 1933.

Survivors include daughters, Carol Ann Smith of Yoakum, and Linda Oliver of Bay City; step daughter, Carolyn Hosch of Giddings; sisters, Delora Morgan of Symore, Ernestine Fikes of Bay City, Georgie Knight of Houston, and Shirley Brafield of Sweeny; brothers, E. C. Smith of Selkirk Island, and G. A. Smith of Bay City; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Raymond M. Sneath, 76, will be held 2 p. m. Saturday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel with Joe Wrape officiating. Burial will be at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Mr. Sneath was born Dec. 5, 1915 in Trenton, N. J. to Lewis K. and Minerva Clay Sneath and he died Nov. 5, 1992 at his home.

He was a resident of Bay City for 29 years and formerly of Alice. He was a member of the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Hammock of Bay City; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Debbie and Craig Sharp of Bay City, Diane and James Beyer of Markham, Barbara Sneath of Bay City and Tracey and Kelly Morris of Midfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond E. and Debbie Sneath of Bay City; a sister, Verna Ricker of Sorento, Fla.; a brother, L. E. Sneath of Miami, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Kimberly and Jennifer Sharp of Bay City, Rebecca, Richard and Kristen Beyer, all of Markham, Ashley Sneath of Bay City, Michael Sneath and Amanda Wycoff of Midfield and Raymond C. Sneath of Bay City.

Pallbearers will be Dick Eaton, Craig Sharp, James Beyer, Richard Beyer, Michael Sneath and Kelly Morris.

Betty Jean Sneath, 68, of Bay City passed away at her home on Friday, July 23, 2004. She was born July 1, 1936 in Mineola, Texas to the late Johnny Cecil and Helen LaVerne Klingaman Hammock.

Betty was a life long resident of Matagorda Co. living in both Bay City and Markham where she devoted her life to her church, the Church of Christ. She will always be remembered best with a smile on her face and a microphone in her hand to demonstrate her love for country music. She left behind many precious family members that will forever be remembered with her sense of strong family values and intense devotion to God.

Survivors include: four daughters and two sons-in-law, Debbie and Craig Sharp of Bay City, Diane and James Beyer of Markham, Tracy Sneath of Markham, and Barbara Sneath of Bay City; son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Deeanna Sneath of Markham; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Floyd Wright of Houston and Zenith and Ardie Ray Stevens of Yoakum; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Joyce Hammock of Killeen; 12 grandchildren, Becky Curtner of Bay City, Kim and Mark Ashburn of Allen, Richard and Ginger Beyer of Markham, Kristin and Jim Wyatt of Needville, Jennifer Sharp, Ashley Sneath, and Jeff Sharp all of Bay City, Michael Sneath, Mandy Wycoff, and Chris Sneath all of Markham, Kent and Amber Morris of Wadsworth, and Krystal Morris of Midfield; and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Nichols Rd. Church of Christ with Bro. Joe Wrape officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. The Funeral services for Mrs. Rosie Lee Snow age 26 years, 4 months and 27 days were held Monday at 4 P. M. from the funeral home of Taylor Bros. with the Rev. Franklin McCorkle of the Church of God of Bay City officiating. Burial was in Cedar Vale cemetery.

Mrs. Snow is survived by her husband, Mr. Taft Snow, daughter, Rosie Kathirine, two sons, Alvin Joe and Jerry Jr. Snow of Bay City, Texas, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oad Linker, three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Winkles, Mrs. Minnie Evans and Miss Dema Linker and two brothers, Mrs. Emmitt and Leo Linker.

Mrs. Snow had been a resident of Bay City for seven months.

Annie Mary Posey Sparks, 96, of Markham passed away July 20, 2008 in Bay City.

She was born March 3, 1912 in Union Valley, Texas to the late Isaac Benton and Lora Edith Walker Posey.

Mrs. Sparks was a resident of Clemville Texas for 60 years, before moving to Markham 20 years ago. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Markham, and worked for Markham Elementary School for many years.

She is survivors by: her two sons, Robert N. and wife Jane Sparks of Buckeye, Texas and Kevin Sparks of Markham, Texas; sister, Muriel Savage of Markham, Texas and grandson Randy B. Sparks of Buckeye, Texas.

Mrs. Sparks was preceded in death by her husband Alvin Sparks.

The family will receive visitors Thursday night from 7 until 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Morgan officiating.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Pallbearers will be Nolan Savage, Nathan Savage, David Savage Jr., Neal Mallard, Stacey Horton, and Daron Dabelgott.

Kermit Spielman

Funeral arrangements for Kermit Spielman, 73, of Bay City were held 2 p. m. Saturday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Welch officiating. Burial was conducted by Bay City AF and AM Lodge 865 at Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mr. Spielman was born on Dec. 18, 1916, in Webster City, Iowa, to Elmo Bruce Spielman and Leona Belle Blake, and died July 5, 1990, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lora Eddie Cole Spielman, who died in 1980.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge 865. He served with the U. S. Army in World War II and was awarded the Silver Medal with two oak leaf clusters for exceptional bravery. He was mobilized in the 36th Rainbow Division of the Texas National Guard in 1939 while attending Texas A & I University in Kingsville and became inactive in 1952 as a captain. He retired from Bay City Independent School District after teaching school from 1952 to 1979.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and William C. Miles of Whitewright, Texas; sisters, Feriba Saul of Humbolt, Iowa, and Ferdel Horton of Austin; brothers, Robert Blake and David Vernon Spielman, both of Austin; four grandchildren, Kermit Alan Miles, Natrece Miles, Chris Miles and Jeremy Miles and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews in California, Iowa and Texas.

Pallbearers were Master Masons of the Masonic Lodge 865.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shrine Burn Centers or a charity of your choice.

Steinmeyer, William Charles, age 73, of Bay City, passed away in Matagorda General Hospital early today. Services will be held in Taylor Brothers Chapel on Saturday, January 15 at 2:30 p. m. under the direction of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Steinmeyer, a member of one of the original families to settle in Bay City, is survived by his widow, Mrs. Verlie Mae Whitley Steinmeyer of Bay City; daughters, Mrs. Audrey LaBeff of Markham and Mrs. Ann Schulz of Alvin; sons, Gene of Deer Park and James of Beaumont. Also, sisters, Mrs. Wade Purcell of Wenatchee, Wash., and Mrs. Walter Irons of Tonasket, Wash. Other survivors are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Jim Schulz, Sam Maglitto, Ward Pope, B. F. Schulz, Carlton LaBeff, and Carlton Lee LaBeff. Honorary pallbearers will be Ashley Etie, Ted Winston, Conrad Bishop, Sidney Wilder, the Rev. R. E. Black, R. H. Renfro, Buddy Broughton and Lawrence Brockman. Johnnie Stephens, 70, of Richmond, Texas died April 19, 2005 at the Cornerstone Hospital in Houston, Texas.

He was born September 26, 1934 in Cherry Valley, Arkansas to the late Winfred Lee and Chalice Marie Bussell Stephens.

He was a resident at the Richmond State School for many years.

Survivors include: sister and brother-in-law, Mollie Marie and Norman May of Bay City; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Betty Stephens, Claude and Dianne Stephens all of Bay City, W. C. Stephens of McDade, TX; sister-in-law, Nora Stephens of Bay City; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Earl Stephens.

Funeral Service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, April 21, 2005 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel with the Chaplain Ronnie Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tommy, Greg and David May, Bill Stephens, Jessie Longoria and Billy Reeder.

Robert Wayne Steubing, 79, of Bay City, passed away Monday, January 25, 2010.

He was born February 10, 1930 in Houston, Texas to Thomas Lincoln "Red" Steubing and Doris Wilkinson Steubing. He was a 1948 graduate of Bay City High School and attended the University of Texas. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City, was employed with Lane Wells Oil Field Service Co. from 1951 to 1967 and then was an operator at Dow Chemical Co., retiring in 1993.

He was a lifelong resident of Bay City and his hobby was building Purple Martin birdhouses. He loved the outdoors and feeding the birds and squirrels.

He is survived by numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Thomas Paul Steubing.

Visitation will be at Taylor Bros Funeral Home on Tuesday evening. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City with the Rev. Michael Sydnor officiating.

Graveside funeral services for Thomas L. “Red” Steubing, 95, of Bay City, will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday January 5, at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City, with Rev. Sam Steele officiating.

 

Steubing died January 2, 1999, at Matagorda House Nursing Home. He was born November 8, 1903, in Wealder, Texas, to the late John Robert and Lela Deaton Steubing.

 

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a resident of Bay City since 1933, and a retired operator for Marathon Oil Company.

 

Survivors include: his son, Robert Wayne Steubing of West Columbia, and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Doris Wilkinson Steubing, on June 18, 1980; his won, Tom Steubing, on April 25, 1968; and by his brother, H. O. “Buster” Steubing.

 

Contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P. O. Box 14301, in Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-0301.

August 5, 1947 – April 25, 1968

 

A 20-year-old Bay City man died in a Houston hospital this morning from injuries received in a two-car accident in Houston early Wednesday morning.

 

Dead is Tom Steubing, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Steubing of 2419 13th Street, Bay City. Two other Bay City residents were injured in the accident. They were identified as Randy Sullivan, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Sullivan of 2104 Marguerite, and Mrs. Bowie Stanley Vaughan of Bay City. All reportedly work in Houston. Sullivan was treated and released from a Bellaire hospital, and Mrs. Vaughan is still in the hospital with a fractured arm. The accident took place in southwest Houston about 12:10 AM Wednesday. The occupants of the second car were not injured seriously.

 

Funeral services for Steubing are set for 10:00 AM Saturday at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Joseph Cooper, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Besides his parents, Steubing is survived by a brother, Robert. He was employed by the S & R Tool Co. of Houston.

Services will be held on June 21 for Abe M. Stevens, 86, of Bay City, at 10 a. m. at the Bay City Funeral Home Chapel.

Officiating will be the Rev. Charles Cochran of Brazoria Baptist Church.

Stevens died June 19 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston.

Survivors include his sons Frank H. Stevens of San Antonio, O. Ned Stevens, Jack F. Stevens and Abe J. Stevens Jr. of Cedar Lane; his daughter, Tece Parker of Bay City; his brother Ben Stevens of Bay City; his sisters, Vevi Stevens of Sargent, May Werlla and Mollie Bullard of Cedar Lane, his twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Burial at Cedarvale Cemetery will follow the services.

Stevens’ grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins of the Bay City Funeral Home.

Arline Stewart, 88, of Corpus Christi passed away April 2, 1996 at her residence.

She was born Oct. 2, 1907 in Walton, Kansas to Raymond A. and Maude Edith Sands Kelly. She was a member of the Methodist Church, a lifelong resident of Corpus, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary in Corpus Christi.

She is survived by a daughter, Wanda Lou McClaugherty of Corpus Christi; by a son James Dale Stewart of Beaumont; by a brother Paul Kelly of New Braunfels; by three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamar C. Stewart; a daughter, Janie V. Goonan; a son Wayne L. Stewart and by two brothers Arthur Kelly and Bill Kelly.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a. m. Saturday, April 6 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. Horace McMillan officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Funeral services for Carroll Stewart, 78, of Bay City were scheduled for 2 p. m. today at First Baptist Church with the Rev. W. D. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mr. Stewart was born Oct. 2, 1910, in McDade, Texas and died April 7, 1989, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.

He was a retired salesman from Bay City Auto and Sales where he worked for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Nelva Stewart of Bay City; a son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Linda Stewart of Clear Lake; a daughter, Betty Sue Latchford of Dallas; a brother, George Stewart of San Antonio; three sisters, Ruth Bernard of Austin, Hazel Heinike of LaMarque and Catherine West of Fayetteville, Ark.; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers include Dick McCullough, Bill Thompson, Tom Anderson, Jim Powers, Adrian Newsome and Sam Hurta.

Nelva Maurine Stewart, 88, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2002.

She was born June 12, 1914 to Charles and Mary Lokey in Huffsmith, Texas and was a resident of Wimberley, Texas.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Cooper and husband William of Wimberley; son, Carroll Ray Stewart Jr. and wife Linda of Houston; six grandchildren, Donna Colabuono of Driftwood, Texas, Sue Ann Clark of Dallas, Linda L. Nelson of Corpus Christi, Sen Stewart of College Station, Stephen Stewart of San Marcos and Shannon Cooper of Wimberley.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church in Bay City, Texas. Interment will follow in the Cedarvale Cemetery.
