Funeral services for Betty Lea Miller, 60, of Bay City will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Hardaway officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

 

Mrs. Miller was born August 30, 1929, to Lee and Cecilia Lindley Burwell of North Freedom, Wisconsin, and died August 25, 1990, at her home. A resident of Bay City since 1952, she was a member of the Baptist church.

 

She is survived by: a daughter, Sharel Cuccia of Edmond, Oklahoma; a son, Donald Miller of Bay City; two sisters, JoAnn Stevens of Ingleside, Texas, and Susan Burwell of Jacksonville, Arkansas; four brothers, Charles Burwell of Angleton, Don Burwell of Angleton, Jerry Burwell of Brazoria, and Mickey Burwell of Lake Jackson; four grandchildren, Sara Renee Martin of Bay City, James Allen Ryman of Wadsworth, Donald Bruce Miller, Jr. of Bay City, and Debra K. Miller of Bay City and a great-grandchild, Cortney Lynn Miranda of Bay City.

 

Pallbearers include Jerry Burwell, Jr., David Schmoker, Dewayne Smith, Danny Heidrich, Danny Burwell and Mike Burwell. Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Funeral services for former Bay Citian Ellen Lucille Minkert, 81, of Houston, will be held 2:00 PM Saturday at First Baptist Church. Dr. W. D. Baker will officiate. Burial will be at Cedarvale Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday.

Mrs. Minkert was born December 14, 1910, in El Mina to C. C. and Dora Rarick Cline, and she died September 23, 1992, at West Houston Medical Center in Houston.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Bay City and its Ruth Sunday School Class. Mrs. Minkert was a retired school teacher who taught two years in Texana, seven in Edna, one in Falfurrias, and 18 in Bay City.

Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, William G. and Kyy Minkert of Bay City and John H. and Sue Minkert of Angleton; a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and James Glen Whitley of Houston; a brother, L. C. Cline of Florida; two sisters, Floy Mae Richards of Trinity and Imogene Semands of Conroe; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Glenna and Peter Hajek of Dallas, Ellen and Fred Mayer of Houston, Lee Ann and John Werler of Houston, Linda Beth and Dan Jacobs of California, Leslie and Kervin Robinson of Edna, Frances and Jim Conway of Groves, Paula and Billy Wayne Gray of Bay City, William F. Minkert of Arlington, Susan Lee and Michael Nordin of Lake Jackson, John Stephen Minkert and Sarah Marie Minkert of Angleton and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Minkert was preceded in death by her husband, William Minkert, in 1973 and a sister, Cedele Renfro.

Pallbearers will be Peter Hajek, Fred Mayer, John Werler, Dan Jacobs, Kervin Robinson and Jim Conway. Honorary pallbearers are Billy Wayne Gray, William F. Minkert and John S. Minkert.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Sam Houston State University or the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for William Colby Morris, 12, of Bay City, will be held 4:00 PM Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with Monsignor James Brunner officiating.

A Rosary will be said 7:00 PM today at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Master Morris was born March 1, 1981, in Wharton, to William Dean and Shirley Ann Stevens Morris and died March 10, 1993, at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. He was a member of the Catholic church and a student at Bay City Junior High School.

Survivors include: his parents, William Dean and Shirley Ann Morris of Bay City; two brothers, William Cody Morris and William Cole Morris, both of Bay City; paternal grandmother, Rose Williamson of Bay City; maternal grandparents, Jack and Margaret Stevens of Cedar Lane; paternal great-grandmother, Loy Coward of Houston; and, paternal great-grandmother, Katherine Fabrygel of Blessing.

He was preceded in death by: his paternal grandfather, William Earl Morris in 1976 and an uncle, William Luke Morris in 1988.

Pallbearers are his uncles: Mark Morris, Kelly Morris, Bill Morris, Jack Stevens Jr. and Jack Smith.

Rose F. Smith, 85, of Bay City, Texas passed away December 10, 2018.  She was born June 16, 1933 to the late Louis and Katherine Florus Fabrygel.  She was employed at the First National Bank in Bay City for many years.

She was preceded in death by two sons, William Luke Morris and W. Dean Morris; and a brother, Robert Fabrygel.

Survivors include daughters, Gayle Elaine Morris and Diane Smith; sons, Mark W. Morris, W. Kelly Morris, W. Wayne “Bill” Morris and W. Paul Morris; sisters, Helen Mosley and Annie Savage; brothers, Tony Fabrygel, Louis Fabrygel and Frankie Fabrygel; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, December 14, 2018 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel in Bay City.

Funeral Mass will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City with the Rev. Greg Korenek officiating.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Mr. Morris was born January 27, 1956, in Bay City, to William Earl and Rose Ann Fabrygel Morris, and died June 9, 1988, in Palacios. A lifelong resident of Bay City, he was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include: his mother, Rose Williamson of Bay City; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Fabrygel of Blessing; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Loy Coward of Hazelwood, North Carolina; two sisters, Gayle Morris of Huntsville and Diane Smith of Red Oak, Texas; five brothers, Dean Morris of Bay City, Mark and Wayne Morris of Palestine, Kelly Morris of Midfield, and Paul Morris of Austin.

He was preceded in death by: his father, William E. Morris, in 1976.

Mr. Nalley was born May 15, 1945, to Henry Roy and Nellie Mae Gray Nalley in New Hope, Kentucky, and died August 25, 1991, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Houston.

 

A resident of Bay City since 1974, he was a member of the Nazarene Church.

 

Survivors include his wife, Debbie Wilson Nalley of Bay City; a daughter, Tawana Nalley of Bay City; five sons, Shane and Gabriel Nalley, both of Bay City, and Eugene, Dennis and Daniel Nalley, all of Cambridge, New York; his foster parents, Bartholomew and Marguerite Crowley of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky; 10 sisters, Evon Brightwell of Jeffersonville, Indiana, Nancy Blingnaut of Newport, Kentucky, Martha Dobbs of Louisville, Kentucky, Carolyn Horne of Bay City, Henrietta Probus of Valley Station, Kentucky, Evelyn Nalley of Louisville, Linda Starrett of Indiana, Vivian of Cincinnati, Ohio, and twin sisters Glinda of Germany and Linda of Louisville; and six brothers, Harold Nalley of Fort Mitchell, Bob Nalley, Julian Nalley and Donald Nalley, all of Louisville, John Crowley of Fort Mitchell and Robert Crowley of Dallas.

Mr. New was born August 1, 1895, in Hope, Texas, to Henry Lewis and Olive Bailey New, and died December 16, 1986, at Sweeny House, Sweeny, Texas.

 

A resident of Bay City for 43 years, he was a member of the Pentecostal Church.

 

Survivors include his wife, Addie Gertrude New of Bay City; six daughters, Leona Inez Boyd of Wharton, Merle Dean Watkins of Kiowa, Oklahoma, Nannie Bell Rodgers of Bay City, Wanda Nell Fansler of Grand Saline, Texas, Elizabeth Ann Brown of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Virginia Louise Burke of Hurst, Texas; three sons, Maurice Calvin New of Bay City, Jesse Louis New of Conroe and Bill Fred New of Greenville, Texas; a sister, Myrtle Holt of Vacaville, California; 24 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

NEEDVILLE -- John William Osborne, 80, of Needville and formerly of Bay City, died Saturday, May 15, 1999.

He was born June 18, 1918, in Sexsmith, Alberta, Canada, to the late John and Mary Bulger Osborne. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Survivors: daughter, LaVerne Johnson of Needville; brother, Darrel Tomer of Apple Valley, Calif.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: wife, Elsie Osborne.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Bay City with Bishop Joe Cannon officiating.

Funeral services for Elsie Osborne, 78, of Bay City, were held 2:30 PM Sunday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with Bishop Glenn Ashcraft officiating. Burial was at Cedarvale Cemetery.

 

Mrs. Osborne was born June 27, 1914, in Sanger, California, to William and Katie Helzer Schwabenland and died March 26, 1993, at Matagorda General Hospital.

 

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

 

Survivors include her husband, John W. Osborne of Bay City; a daughter, LaVerne Johnson of Bay City; a sister, Gladys Mead of Sanger, California; and sever grandchildren.

 

Pallbearers were E. J. Ashcraft, Jr., Ken Madsen, James Shaw, Randy Howser, David Homer, Don Noska, Sonny Allison and E. J. Thormaehlen.

Funeral services for Sherri Linette Ottis Warren, 20, of Wadsworth were scheduled for 4 p. m. today at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Bay City, where the Rev. Charles Sonnier officiated. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery.

A rosary was said at 7 p. m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wadsworth, with Rev. Sonnier officiating.

Mrs. Warren was born Oct. 26, 1964, in Bay City, and died Oct. 7, 1985, in Hermann Hospital, Houston.

She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Survivors include her parents, Mike and Mirian Roe Ottis of Wadsworth; a daughter, Kimberly Elise Warren of Wadsworth; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ottis of Bay City; and three brothers, Dan Ottis of Kingsville and Ronnie and David Ottis of Wadsworth.

Pallbearers include Travis Cartwright, Eddie Janise Jr., John Layton, Gerald Ludwig, John Merck and Ray T. “Footes” Porter.

Honorary pallbearers included Sam Hurta and Dr. Jim Ely.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Roe of Bay City.

Robert F. Peden, Jr.

Robert F. Peden, Jr., 89, died Saturday, February 3, 2001 after a long illness. He was born July 26, 1911 in Fort Worth, Texas to Robert F. Peden and Laura Phillips Peden and was a resident of Bay City since 1934. Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia “Gigi” LeTulle Peden.

Bob attended Sam Houston State University and the University of Texas; he graduated from Cumberland University Law School in 1933. A Former County Attorney of Matagorda County, he had also served as City Attorney of Bay City and as president of the Matagorda County Bar Association. He loved his church; he was an Elder and Clerk of Session of the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City and has served as president of the South Texas Presbytery Men of the church. A prodigious reader, Bob was always a gentleman and always in good humor. He was kind and considerate and very fond of Bay City. He was president of the Bay City Rotary Club and was a member of the Board at the Library Association for many years.

He is survived by his sister, Laura Louise Clark of Berkeley, Calif.; his brother, Phil Peden of Houston and by several nieces and nephews, including Scott Peden and wife Janet Lewis Peden and wife Janet Lewis Peden of Bay City, Phil Peden Jr., Jeanne Linn Anderson Harrington, Judy Stanley, Rebecca Wood and Barbara Clark.

Family burial will be 10 a. m. Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at Cedarvale Cemetery. A memorial Service will be held at 4 p. m. Friday, February 9, 2001 at the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City with the Rev. Sam Steele officiating.

Virginia LeTulle Peden

Virginia LeTulle Peden, 82, of Bay City died September 10, 2000 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. She was born August 29, 1918 to the late John James and Katherine Beach LeTulle.

Mrs. Peden was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a long-time resident of Bay City. Her notable contributions to the community began in 1939 when she organized and led Girl Scout Troop #1 of Bay City and served as the Commissioner of Bay City Girl Scouts from 1944 to 1948. She was a charter member of the Bay City Study Club, which began in 1947, and the Bay City Junior Service League, which began in 1959. From 1952 until 1975, she devoted her life to educating children at the Peden School. She will be remembered and missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Survivors include husband of 61 years, Robert F. Peden, Jr. of Bay City; her sisters Jean Anderson, Hattie Ziegenhals and Juanita Matthes of Bay City and Ida Mae Taylor of Rockport, Texas, and numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

Funeral Services will be 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2000 at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sam Steele officiating. Interment will be at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers include Marc Harrington, Scott Peden, Phil Peden, Jr., Jim Matthes, James Lee Ziegenhals and Rusty Green. Honorary pallbearers are to be Louis Ziegenhals, Bruce Ziegenhals, Richard Taylor, Don Haley, Johnny LeTulle and Marc Landrum.

BAY CITY - Gladys Mae Penny, 78, of Bay City, died Friday, March 26, 2004.

She was born March 15, 1926, in Eagle Lake, to the late Raymond Sr. and Ellen Bernice White Spitdowski. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Survivors: daughters, Sue Richardson of Sour Lake and Lola Utz of Victoria; sons, Jimmy Penny of Houston and Billy Penny of Bay City; sisters, Dorothy Giaimo of Northbrook, Ill., Minnie Turner of Bristol, Va., Ruth Bunkley of Albuquerque, N.M., Martha Spitdowski of Dallas, Evelyn Wages and Ann Church both of Pell City, Ala., and Ellen Fowler of Ganado; brother, Paul David Spitdowski of Scottsville, Ky.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, L.D. Penny; and brothers, Ray Spitdowski Jr. and Howard Spitdowski.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating.

Mr. Penny was born March 26, 1910, in Ashby, Texas, and died Sept. 25, 1984, at his residence. He was the son of Walter Clarence and the former Hibbie Dunbar.

Survivor include; wife, Gladys Spitdowski Penny; daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline Sue and Denny Richardson of Sour Lake; daughter and son-in-law, Loloa Lou and Bob Utz of Groesbeck, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy L. and Renate Penny of Sour Lake; son and daughter-in-law, Billy R. and Diane Penny of the US Navy in Cuba; brother and sister-in-law, Clay and Marie Penny; five grandchildren.

Stella Pearl Hauff Phillips, 90, of Bay City, TX, passed away January 25, 2016.

She was born November 2, 1925, in Cleburne, TX, to the late Phillip Hauff and Maude Hadley Hauff.

She met Earl Phillips in Palacios, TX, and they married February 2, 1945. After his service in WWII, they moved to Bay City, where they owned and operated Earl’s Diner. He preceded her in death in 1987. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Hauff.

Survivors include daughter, Darla Helm and husband Ray of Terrell, TX; son, Mark Phillips and wife Jane of Fairfield, TX; sisters, Marie Minze and Dorothy Boleyn, both of Sweeny, and Joyce Schneider of Port Lavaca; brother, Clyde Hauff of Selkirk; grandchildren, Jeffrey West, Ryan Phillips, Matthew Phillips and Todd Phillips; step- grandchildren, Rob Helm, Sandie Helm and Brian Helm; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

The family received friends and relatives from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Friday, January 29, 2016, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 30, 2016, at the First Baptist Church in Bay City, with Dr. Mike Zimmerman officiating.

Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Pallbearers were Ryan Phillips, Matthew Phillips, Todd Phillips, Jeff West, Kenneth Hauff and Ricky Gasaway.

Funeral services for Mable Cook Phillips, 76, of Bay City will be held 10 a. m. Thursday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Mrs. Phillips was born July 5, 1916 in Porter Springs to W. H. and Minnie Brewton Cook and she died Jan. 4, 1993 in Columbus.

She was a member of the Assembly of God. Mrs. Phillips retired from Stanley’s in 1987 after 31 years of service.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and John Hill of Fort Worth, Beulah and Bobby Jones of Orange Grove and Pat and Robert Williams of Bay City; two sons, and daughters-in-law, Troy and Francis Vaden of Colonial Heights, Va. and David and Cindy Phillips of Bay City; a sister, Hazel Beard of Nacogdoches; three brothers, Glenn and Elwood Cook, both of Crockett and W. H. Cook of Brazoria; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
