Raleigh Douglas Huebner

 

Raleigh Douglas Huebner, 90, of Bay City died October 22, 2003 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. He was born October 14, 1913 in Bay City to the late Marion Taylor and Lillian Hurst Huebner. Mr. Huebner was a lifelong resident of Bay City and was a member and Ruling Elder of the First Presbyterian Church.

 

Raleigh graduated from Bay City High School in 1932. He served in the Merchant

Marines during WWII from 1942 - 1945 as a ships Marine Engineer, and retired from the Merchant Marines in 1971. He married Claribel Mason on June 24,1944, and they made Bay City their home. Raleigh was very active in community civic groups, especially the Bay City Country Club. He along with his brother Bob established the local chapter of "The Sons of the Republic of Texas" Matagorda Chapter# 35 in 1985, and in 1990 he was awarded the "The Order of the Knights of San Jacinto". Raleigh had a great love for the American way of life.

 

Survivors include: sister, Lillian Luceile Wilkinson of Bay City; nephews, Bobby Wilkinson and Doug Huebner both of Bay City, and Don Huebner of New Mexico; niece, Martha Wilkinson Lake of Las Vegas, Nevada; numerous great nieces and nephews; and a very special care giver, Pam Hill of Bay City.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife Claribel Huebner July 7,1971, brothers, Robert Taylor and Marion Toliver "Top" Huebner; and his nephew, William A. “Bill” Huebner.

Funeral service was 2 p. m. Friday, October 24, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sam Steele officiating. Sam Houston, IV will serve as eulogist. Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Nannie Belle Burchfield Keith

Nannie Belle Burchfield Keith, 91, of Markham, Texas passed away Jan. 16, 2003 in Bay City. She was born Aug. 28, 1911 in Markham to George Milton Johnson and Nannie Victoria Barnes Johnson.

She was a lifelong resident of Markham, a member of the First Baptist Church of Markham and a member of the Eastern Star.

Lovingly known to her family as “Dutch”, she is survived by her nieces and nephews, Louis Kopnicky, Jr. of Markham, Mollie Antonette Martin of North Carolina, Madeline Gotcher of Sweeny, Ernest Milton Kay of San Diego, California, Michael Truitt Johnson of Bandera, Carolyn Johnson Brand of Dallas, and Fern Feathers of East Bernard; and by numerous grand nieces and grand nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Alzada Johnson Kopnicky and Madge Winona Johnson Kay; brothers, Harvey Earl Johnson, Lee Roy “Tot” Johnson and George Milton “Buck” Johnson.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Howard Harper officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Pallbearers will be Donald Ray Kopnicky, Dustin Marshall Landry, Richard Lansford, Mike Isaac, Steve Gotcher and Bruce Gotcher. Honorary pallbearer will be W.D. Cornelius, Jr.

Funeral services for Gloria Wiginton Murray, 65, of Bay City, are scheduled for 11:30 AM Monday, November 14, 1994, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mrs. Murray was born January 14, 1929, in the Hahn Community near El Campo, to Denton and Roxie Wiginton, and died November 11, 1994, at Matagorda General Hospital.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and a former teacher at Bay City Junior High School. She was a member of the Junior Service League and the Bay City Book Review Club.

Survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Debbie Murray of Houston; a daughter, Diane Murray McKelvy and a son, Drew Murray, both of Bay City; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Patsy Wiginton of Bay City; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Murray of Houston, Elizabeth, Kathryn and Laura McKelvy and Matthew Murray, all of Bay City and Christopher and Meredith Murray of Sweeny.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Wiginton, and her parents.

Pallbearers are Bert Huebner, Vim Rye, W. A. Thompson, W. M. Penny, Robert Lundy, Hefner Appling, Lowell Raun and J. R. Reed Jr.

Dorothy L. Roe, 82, of Bay City died, Tuesday, April 23, 2002 in Bay City.

She was born February 7, 1920 in Trinity, Texas to the late William Thomas Cannon and Lois Christian Cannon.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Kaspar and her husband Ben of Bay City; sons, Cecil Warren and his wife Zada of Houston, and Larry Roe and his wife Martha of Bay City; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lee Roy Roe.

Funeral service was held Thursday, April 25, 2002 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, with the Dr. Mike Zimmerman officiating.

Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Arrangements were with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ryman, 98, of Houston, Tx, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998. She was born August 25, 1899 in Guin, Ark. to William Pentecost and Sarah Marcella Chapin Pentecost. She was a homemaker, a member of the former Wadsworth Baptist Church, and a former member of the D. A. R.

She is survived by her daughters, Marcelle Ryman Odom of Bay City and Marjorie J. Hough of Kemah; by her sons, Cleatis a Ryman of Houston, Fred E. Ryman of La Marque and Roger G. Ryman of Houston; and by 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred. E. Ryman in 1973, by a granddaughter, Barbara Norton, and by two sisters and four brothers.

Pallbearers will be John Hough of Houston, Kenny Ryman of Houston, Dana Ryman of LaMarque, Jeffrey Ryman of Tomball, Robbin Odom of Bay City, and Jay Ryman of Hubbard. Honorary pallbearers include Glenn Odom of Houston, Mark Ryman of Goodrich, James Ryman of Hubbard, Darryl Ryman of Vidor, Roger Ryman, Jr. of Fort Bend, In., all other Grandsons, and Dr. Jesse M. Ryman of Hubbard.

The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on tonight from 6 to 7:30 p. m. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Bay City.

Fred E. Ryman, 80, a resident of Wadsworth passed away May 11. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 13, at 2:30 p. m. at the Wadsworth Baptist Church with Rev. C. O. Hardy and Rev. R. E. Black officiating. Interment was at the Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers were: George Bunk, Lawrence Polensky, Norman Bissett, A. Seerden, Arnold Fanson and Johnny Ryman. Services were under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Wadsworth Baptist Church.

Services for Edmund A. Siptak, 71, of Bay City, were held July 16 at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Frank Seaman of the First Presbyterian Church officiated.

 

Siptak died July 14 at Matagorda General Hospital. He is survived by: his wife, Lydia Siptak of Bay City; his sons, David Siptak of Bay City, Dewaine E. Siptak of Gonzales, and Wayne B. Siptak of Bay City; his brothers, Milford Syptak of Bay City and Wilmont Syptak of Houston; and by his seven grandchildren.

 

A member of the First Presbyterian Church, Siptak was owner of the Siptak Food Market until his retirement earlier this year.

 

Burial at Cedarvale Cemetery followed the services. Pallbearers were: Jimmy Syptak, Tim Syptak, Ronnie Syptak, Joe Siptak, Bobby McKinney, and Ruben Grebe. Services were under the direction of Dick R. Elkins of Bay City Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Lydia Stepan Siptak, 87, of Bay City, will be held at 11:00 a. m. on Friday, July 17, 1998 at First Presbyterian Church, Rev. Sam Steele officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mrs. Siptak died on Wednesday, July 15 at Bay Villa Nursing Home where she ws a resident. She was born September 16, 1910 in Bleiblerville, Texas to William and Marie Stepan. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

She and her husband were the owners of Siptak’s Grocery store for more than 30 years.

She is survived by her sons: Wayne Siptak of Dallas, Dwaine Siptak of Gonzales, and David Siptak of Bay City; sister Vlasta Grebe of Brenham; brother Raymond Stepan of Monaville, Texas; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Edmund A. Siptak in 1983, five brothers, and one sister.

Pallbearers will be Ruben Grebe, Joe Siptak, Rick Alexander, Jimmy Syptak, Floyd Stepan, and Odell Stein.

Arrangements are with the Bay City Funeral Home.

Mrs. Addie J. Thornton, 79, of Magnolia, Texas passed away Thursday in the Tomball Hospital. Mrs. Thornton was a resident of Magnolia for 20 years and was the mother of the late Noble D. Thornton of Bay City.

 

Survivors are: husband, G. C. Thornton of Magnolia; 3 sisters, Mrs. Hattie Barl of Orange, Mrs. Mamie Mueller of Houston, Mrs. Florence Perkins of Houston; 2 brothers, C. C. Brown of Houston and G. L. Brown of Barcliff; 2 grandchildren, Mrs. Anne Kovar of Bay City and Noble Douglas Thornton of Houston; 2 great-grandchildren, Miss Anne Elsie Kovar and Miss Jennifer Leigh Kovar of Bay City.

 

Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday morning at the Klein Funeral Chapel in Tomball with the Reverend Don Smith officiating. Interment will be at 2:00 PM at the Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Edward C. Whaley, 52, of Cedarvale Rd., Bay City, died Wednesday, December 20, in Matagorda General Hospital. He was born August 19, 1926 in Stafford, Alabama. The deceased was a Bay City resident since 1950, engineer for the Trinidad Oil Services for the past 17 years, currently working in Trinidad, West Indies, a member of Bay City Lodge No. 865 AF & AM and a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army. Survivors include his wife, Mary Whaley of Bay City, his mother, Mrs. Earbie Whaley of Bessemer, Alabama, a daughter, Deborah Sullivan of Bay City, sisters, Mrs. Lucille Cone of Bessemer, Alabama, Dorcas Screws of Adamsville, Alabama, Mrs. Doris Sanford of Birmingham, Alabama and Mrs. Janice Foriester of Bessemer, Alabama; brothers, Raymond Whaley of Pearland and Donald Whaley of Alabaster, Alabama and a grandson, Christopher Edward Sullivan of Bay City. Funeral services were held at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, today, Friday, at 3 p. m. Rev. Charles Sonnier officiated. Interment at Cedarvale Cemetery under the auspices of Bay City Lodge No. 865 AF & AM. Mary Crocker Whaley, 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 24, 2012. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

Mary was born January 7, 1929 in Adamsville, Alabama to the late Columbus Cleveland Crocker and Elsie Harper Crocker.

She married Edward Charles Whaley on February 12, 1949 and they moved to Bay City in 1951. In 1959 they moved to Colombia, South America for ten years. They then traveled to Quito, Ecuador and then to San Tome, Venezuela before returning to Bay City in 1975 where she made her home until moving to Portland, Texas with family in 2010. After the death of her husband in 1978, she began her banking career with the First National Bank of Bay City, as vice president and administrative Assistant to the president until retirement in 2000.

Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bay City, where she served for two years on the Pastor/Parish Relationship Committee. She was very active in her community, where she served as a past president of the Bay City Chamber of Commerce, past member of Bay City Pilot Club and director, and past member of the Education Committee for BCISD new teachers luncheon. She was honored with being the first woman to join the Bay City Rotary Club and became the club’s first woman president.

Preceding her in death were: her parents, Columbus and Elsie Crocker; her husband, Edward; brothers, Robert Crocker and Elmer Lee Crocker; and two sisters, Madeline Cooper and Margaret Conerly.

She leaves behind: her daughter, Deborah E. Sullivan and son-in-law Edward; grandson, Chris and wife Amy; granddaughter, Carrie and husband Jeff; and two great-grandsons, Parker and Pryce; numerous nieces and nephews, her “lunch bunch” friends and her bridge playing friends.

The family extends special thanks to Elida Morales, her caregiver for the last six months, the staff at the Carriage Inn Retirement Center, her doctors and wonderful nurses for making her final days so peaceful.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 27, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Gantz officiating.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Robert Allison, Kelsey Granberry, Bill Isaacson, Carlton LaBeff, Doug Matthes and Kent Pollard. The Bay City Rotary Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
