James David Morehead After a year’s illness, Mr. J. D. Morehead, a resident of Bay City for 23 years, who was born June 3, 1887 at Rockdale, Texas, died in the home of his sister Mrs. H. F. Shearer of Bay City. He was ill with rheumatism, which developed into paralysis. He took treatments at Marlin, but doctors there held no hope for his recovery. He then returned to his sister’s home, where he died June 21, 1936, at five p.m. Physicians here exerted every effort to help him; also, his many friends and relatives rendered their loving assistance in his behalf. During the last weeks of his illness he became a very happy Christian by accepting the Lord Jesus as his personal Savior, under the ministry of “Mother McCarty”, a returned Missionary of India, and her native boy, Minister James Muriah. He found great comfort in his new and very definite experience as a newborn babe in Christ, and although at times he suffered intensely, he was the sweetest, most patient person ever known by those who knew him. He desired his Christian friends and loved ones to sing and pray with him and often joined in with them. The last song he sang was “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder, I’ll Be There”. He said: “The time has come for my mother’s prayers to be answered.” His mother, Mrs. E. C. Morehead, passed away three years ago, requesting her children and all to meet her in Heaven. Mr. Morehead’s desire was to go there, and assured his friends and loved ones that he was going. Only a few hours before passing, he kissed his sister Mrs. Shearer goodbye and said: “I’m going to Heaven; all I’ve known in this world has been suffering.” Mr. Morehead is survived by four children: Mildred, Ruby, J. D. Jr., and Woodrow; also four brothers, W. H. Morehead of Bay City, T. B. Morehead of Anahuac, H. A. Morehead of Bellaire, and M. D. Morehead of Rosharon; and three sisters, Mrs. H. F. Shearer of Bay City, Mrs. O. E. Hartman of Sealy, and Mrs. G. W. Schraded of Morris, Oklahoma, who was with him during the last two weeks of his illness. He also left many other relatives and friends to mourn his absence. His funeral was attended by many out of town relatives and friends, among whom was his mother’s baby brother, D. B. Kelly and family of Gonzales. Services were conducted at the Walker-Matchett Funeral Home.
