Her maternal grandfather, Captain Samuel Grierson Allardyce, owned one of the first paddle wheel steamships on the Sabine River, the "Neches Belle¯", and was also a merchant in Almadane, LA. Her paternal grandfather, Charles Leroy Smith, owned one of the first lumber mills in western Louisiana. He began that endeavor splitting and selling 100 fence rails for 50 cents, or trading them for land. In later years, he was president of C. L. Smith Oil Company, Gray Oil Company, Vinton Petroleum Company, Producers Pipe Line Co., a director in several banks, and president of C. L.Smith and Sons Land, Cattle and General Mercantile Company.

At the height of their farming operations, as many as eight rail cars of potatoes were harvested, graded and loaded in a day's time. The Smith siding would be lined with cattle cars, awaiting the shipment by rail of cattle to market. The plantation was also the hub for a forgotten part of Texas history. Cattle dipping vats and pens were built to dip the Smith cattle and neighboring ranchers cattle for the notorious cattle tick.

A neighbor and fellow participant in the cattle roundups for dipping was Abel  'Shanghai '¯ Pierce.

The Smith and Pierce fences joined from what is now Danciger and Old Ocean in Brazoria County to the McCrosky headquarters north of Bay City. The remains of some of these dipping vats can still be found near the old Smith plantation headquarters on the banks of the Caney Creek.

A tremendous amount of ash and oak timber was logged in that part of the county, shipped from what was then the New York, Texas and Mexico (later Southern Pacific) Railway/Smith rail siding at Ashwood. Shipping pens for the Smith cattle, a passenger depot, Railway Express, and Post Office, and the Smith general mercantile store were there. Sugar cane was grown, and a sugar can mill and syrup processing facility were a part of the family operations.

The sugar can mill and other Ashwood artifacts are now in the Matagorda County Museum, having been donated by May Belle and her son Grady Leroy Puryear in 1997.

She was a member of the Van Vleck Independent School District Board, active in garden and quilting clubs, and took much pleasure in home making and crafts, an artist in oils and water color par excellence, and quite a seamstress. She was an active participant at the family home when itsā€™ Texas Historical plaque was granted and installed.

Her keen knowledge of the early times of Matagorda County was known by all. She loved to reminisce, and was quite proud of her heritage. She was a great lady in the truest tradition, and will be sorely missed. It is a sore trial to give up Mama, but death is no respecter of persons, and sooner or later we must all die.  'So long Soak, sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite¯."

Interment was at Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City, alongside many members of her family. Services were held at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, October 10, 2002, Brother Mike Zimmerman officiated.

Pallbearers were William Aubrey Puryear, Aves Eaken Puryear, and Dow Hunter Fisher Puryear, all of Houston, John Barber Serrill of Austin, John Fisher Smith, III of Long Moot, and Timothy Thomas Faulkner of Oakum. A00014B2002OT13
