Mr. Steinmeyer Succumbs After Fatal
Accident Grim tragedy marred what was meant to be a happy family reunion yesterday when Mr. Herman Steinmeyer accidentally drank some Highlife, insect poison, from a jug which he thought contained wine, at his home. Three of his daughters, Mrs. J. C. Hopfinger, Mrs. Walter Irons, and Mrs. Wade H. Purcell of Washington state, two sons, W. C. Steinmeyer and H. C. Bucks and six grandchildren were present at his son’s residence here for a family reunion. Mr. Steinmeyer drove from his son’s place to his own home, accompanied by his little granddaughter. When he arrived he went to the shelf to get a jug of wine. On the shelf were two jugs, one containing the wine and the other containing the Highlife. The old gentleman, by mistake, took the wrong jug and drank from it. Immediately realizing his mistake he rushed from the house and told his granddaughter he had drunk the wrong thing and must get home as soon as possible. They returned to his house, took some salt to make him regurgitate and then got in his car and drove as fast as possible to his son’s home. When he arrived there, he told them what had happened. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, but the poison had acquired too much of a start and death occurred last night at 10:15 p. m. The old gentleman, aged 74 years, 5 months, had been a resident of Matagorda county for 54 years. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. J. C. Hopefinger, Brewster, Wash., Mrs. Walter Irons, Chelan, Wash., Mrs. Wade H. Purcell, Wenatchee, Wash., two sons, Mr. W. C. Steinmeyer of Bay City and H. C. Bucks, Cyprus, Texas, and six grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Frank Sherrer, David Kaack, John Kaack, Henry Reinke, Charles Michaelis and Herman Michaelis. Services will be held from the Walker-Matchett funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 3 p. m.

Steinmeyer, aged 80 years and 19 days, passed away yesterday at the home of Mrs. Minnie Huck and was buried this afternoon in Cedarvale Cemetery at 4 o’clock. Mr. Steimeyer was one of the county’s oldest inhabitants, was a man well esteemed and loved by all who knew him. For many weeks he has been in feeble health, and while his death was not unexpected, it is a serious shock to the surviving members of the family who have the sympathy of their many friends in their sad bereavement.
