H. S. Townsend
Hampleton Sumner Townsend S. H. Thompson, age 53, a highly respected citizen of Clemville, and a well known Matagorda county man died last Saturday afternoon while on his way home from Bay City from an attack of heart trouble. With his wife, and family, Mr. Townsend had been in Bay City shopping and were on their way home, and had just left the concrete road near Markham when the sad occurrence happened. Recent rains having made the roads rather muddy, Mr. Townsend decided to put chains on his car. He had one chain on and was reaching into the back seat of the car for the other when he dropped dead. He was immediately rushed to the Loos hospital in Bay City, but it was too late. Mr. Townsend was born in Columbus, on Jan. 19, 1887, and came to this county from Colorado county several years ago. He was an active lodge and church worker, being a member of the I. O. O. F. and the W. O. W. organizations. The ministers of the Baptist, Methodist and Episcopal churches, assisted by the lodges to which he belonged, conducted the funeral services, which were held Sunday afternoon at the home of W. O. Steinmeyer. Interment was made in the Cedarvale Cemetery. Besides his wife, Mr. Townsend leaves five children, Jimmie, Albert, Irene, Inez and Guy to mourn him. Also three brothers, Light and Woodie Townsend of Rock Island, and a host of friends who regret to learn of his death and who extend sympathy to the bereaved family in their sorrow.
